    My entry for this month, lyrics by @richardyot. I composed performed and arranged exclusively on ipad

    Listen to Box Of Things by JanKun on #SoundCloud

    It's very gratifying to hear my words so well interpreted into a finished song. I especially like the synth pads in the background, they give the song an icy feel that perfectly suits the subject matter.

    Great vocal performance as well. You can really feel the anguish that the words are trying to convey.

    Here’s my newest one. I’m pretty proud of the mixing on this. I’m happy with the instrumental version but I always want to have a version with samples vocals, like a news story or something. Just haven’t decided what so far.

    I would agree that it needs a bit more development as you say (samples or vocals) because it does feel like it needs something extra to really make it shine. The main melodic theme is good, and the production, sound design, and mixing are all great but it just needs some more elements to make really compelling.

    Here's my entry to Song of the Month September 2020.

    Something a little different this time. This piece started life back in April as one of a series of challenges between a friend and I in which the idea was to create a piece of music less than 2 minutes long using two instruments. The original was created using just E-piano and one other instrument in Am. Each track playing different phrases and melodies came in as the piece progressed - exploring different melodic ideas at various registers. I found it again while going through the songs on Korg Gadget and here it is now rearranged with a little bit of embellishment added for interest. Thank you for listening :smile:

    The title is inspired by Asimov's Foundation trilogy.

    I really enjoyed this, it has an almost classical vibe with the melodies and counter-melodies, it's a very cinematic piece. I can totally imagine this being used as a soundtrack to a big film, the way that the themes develop and evolve is really well done. And it builds to a great crescendo.

  • Hey, everyone. This track is a result of binge-watching a season of Netflix's Stranger Things. Every synth sound and effect was made from Ableton Live's stock plugins with the exception of Izotope's free Vinyl effect plugin.
    The track as a whole is meant to emulate an 80s theme that would be played as a soundtrack. I'll explain more if need be, but I hope you all like this briefly-made homage.

  • @richardyot
    You've made a very creative and original song here. The eastern instrumentation, the subtle but tight bass that makes the rhythm, and the evolving Wavestation-esq (maybe even the M1 patch near the end) pads throughout are are great. Personally, I would have liked to hear your voice a bit more up front with less filtering at some parts, but regardless, good job.

    It's epic-sounding and rather beautiful. The interweaving arps, the gorgeous synth patches and the great arrangement all combine to make a very enjoyable listen.

    The retro vibe is perfectly captured and this would make a great soundtrack for an episode of Stranger Things.

  • @Polar
    I really like the upright bass grooving and the muted trumpet while the electric guitar in the background with the reverb keeps that indie rock vibe. All of the elements of a small jazz band fit well together with the more modern elements. I personally like when the drums move to a 4 on the floor pattern. I'd just recommend to filter the vinyl cracks you have going on because they're a bit transient heavy. I also think you can include more of the vocals throughout the song. Good job.

  • @DavidEnglish
    I liked this track a lot. Even though it’s ever-changing and only brings in familiar parts like the arpeggios sparingly, I think it’s a cool platter, if you will. I think your mixing is solid and was able to make most sections transition well between each other. I’d simply suggest to have something like having the bass make up more of the foundation. The toms have a lot of low end and seem to overlap in their decay times so some phasing occurs so maybe high pass them a little bit more or make it so they’re monophonic. Good job

  • @Kitusai
    A very interesting short but complex track. I really like the art/animation and think it more than sets the tone. I thought the experimental sound design with the eastern-inspired rhythmic themes was unique and well done. I think there were moments where the organ tone seemed a bit out of time which threw me off a little bit. But, there were many cool ideas in such a short span of time.

  • @Polar @JanKun @DukeWonder @spyrogaia please make sure to leave some feedback for @FunkMachine

    The people who post later in the month trend to get less feedback than those who post early. Be sure to come back to the thread and listen to the latest posts, especially if the posters have commented on your tracks!

    Pretty neat stuff. I think the intro is a little long, could cut it back a few bars. But definitely captured the vibe you’re looking for.

    @richardyot Beautiful sad pop music as usual and maybe more beautiful and sad than usual. The melting between voice and music is catchy (around 2’10 and 3’55 or so). The beat and the sounds float like a flying carpet. Lyrics fit the whole. Excellent.

    @Polar Excellent brass on a good hip hop beat. The female vocals in second part are not necessary imho.

    @DavidEnglish Very funny music. Electronic oriental style, kind of Bollywood under acid!

    @JanKun The sound exclusively on iPad is impressive maybe a bit too strong, with too much infra bass and saturation. My English is not good enough to understand the lyrics. But the feeling is as melancholic as Richardyot tunes. With a pleasant Spanish touch and your moving voice.

    @DukeWonder The bass and beat are excellent upon this saturated wave. Very well done.

    @spyrogaia Very soundtrack feel during the listening of this one. It climbs all along with little adding and changes that keep interest all along. Maybe a little too much compressed and saturated (or it’s my ears this month?)

    @FunkMachine The synth-all 80' feeling is successful. even this kind is not my cup of tea (or my glass of wine ;-)

    Not too much contributions this month but a beautiful diversity!

  • @Kitusai Thanks for the feedback!

  • @richardyot
    Strong instrumental opening that leaves plenty of room for the listener’s imagination. Excellent mix of vocal and background instruments. Love the instrumentation throughout. This one feels contemplative without being lazy or insipid. My favorite one from you so far. (I know I said that last time, but it’s true again.)

    @Polar
    Nice mixture of nostalgic jazz vocals, unusual instrumentation, and atmospheric backgrounds. It all gels together really well with interesting twists and turns. Very cool!

    @Kitusai
    Short and sweet. The music quickly sets a mood that matches the mystery in the visuals. I especially like the open quality of the music, which is a good aural complement to the wind-sweep desert. An excellent experience.

    @JanKun
    Very polished song musically. Really like the various elements that seem to fluctuate in and out of the mix. Vocal backgrounds add a strong extra element near the end of the song.

    @DukeWonder
    Intriguing instrumental piece. Love the bass that seem to warp a bit as it plays. The entire piece has a calm reflective quality, much like ripples from a rock thrown into a pond.

    @spyrogaia
    Being a long-time fan of Isaac Asimov and the Foundation trilogy, this one speaks to me both musically and metaphorically. It works well on both counts. It progresses gradually to build up to an epic level. But it also hints at greater, more momentous events to follow.

    @FunkMachine
    What a great 1980s feel! This one not only recreates a bygone era, but it’s a hard-driving, toe-tapping instrumental on its own. It’s also cool that you used only stock plug-in sounds. That somehow seems to make it even more authentic.

    Having watching all seasons of Stranger Things, I can definitely hear where your track is coming from. It could be part of the soundtrack for the coming season.
    Not much to say here. It is really good as it is. Nice choice of sounds, dynamic is perfect, i ike the simplicity of the drum programming. I really love the kick sound, is that a sample ?
    Really good work, demonstrating your understanding and mastery of the style.

  • @JanKun
    "Box Of Things" - I really love this. The bass and the guitar seem to be embroiled in a disagreeable dialog that is worth paying attention to. It gives this piece that off beat tension. With your vocal layers working very well to lift this piece to a different level (with @richardyot's words). That bit of break at 1:55...superb! And those little piano notes like raindrops, very lovely. I noticed something; Harmonically what's happening at 3:45 onward? In terms of any critiques: I would have liked a little bit more variation in the guitar and bass conversation and perhaps just a tad shorter length of song. This piece as a lot of This Mortal Coil and Radiohead going on. Absolutely top notch!!

    @FunkMachine
    "Anomalous theme" - I had a huge smile on my face listening to this. It definitely has the Stranger Things vibe; but more so it just is good synthwave style music that reminds me of producers like Hyboid or Timecop1983. And yes, it would suit well as part of an OST for a movie. I think you've achieve what you have set out to do. Awesome work!

    I like yours. Great composition with the various instruments. Would be great for a movie. Only gripe is the one instrument you have that’s panned left. It is panned a bit too far in my opinion so it feels a bit out of place.

    That is true. It is hard panned and I might actually balance it out in a future mix. :wink:

    Really good composition. Really cinematic. I like the interaction between all those melodics phrases.

    Since it is really cinematic I kind of understand the crescendo effect. But at some point, I wished for some drop in the dynamic and then instead of tympani kind of percussions, I was kind of hoping for electronic drums that could have taken the track somewhere else.

    I really like the synths textures you chose.

    I think I agree with you. I might actually work on this sometime and add variations. Thank you for the comment :smile:

    @spyrogaia this is very cool. Reminds me of an alt-j interlude...and I love how it builds yet is still separated in its individual elemnts(dunno if that makes sense hah) The composition is really something...also it sounds way better than a typical Korg gadget sound in terms of the mix

    Gadget is so limited that it is good in that way for me. I have to squeeze around to make it do somethings that would be child's play on a typical DAW. I don't know Alt-J but I will have to check this. :smile:

    Thank you for the comment. I am not entirely satisfied with it as it feels too compacted; too thick like concrete towards the end. It feels rather constricting for me and I need a way to make it large yet be open. :smile:

    Aha! That compressed feeling is what I don't like about this track as well. I will work on this a little more sometime. Thank you for your comment. :smile:

    Thank you, I also think the feel is there. I just finished reading Foundation and Earth (not as good as the trilogy really - more like a pleasant ride through hyperspace visiting worlds). :smile:

    Hope to see a lot more contributions in October 2020. Thank you for all the great music.
