DAWs, FX and details for Side-Chaining on IOS

edited September 2020 in General App Discussion

Being woefully ignorant about current audio techniques I didn't get the power of side-chaining until I heard a great mix and watched some videos that showed when and why to apply side-chaining in a mix-down process. Now I get it.

  • Which DAW's have the proper bussing for side-chaining?

  • AUM obviously have the right plumbing support but it's clumsy with time-aligned audio (IMHO)

  • Which compressors support side-chaining?

  • I know Magic Death Eye Stereo has it because it was explained in a thread and I made that work in AUM

  • I know Fab Filter showed it in their GUI but no DAW had support at the time FF was released on IOS

  • I know there are some IOS hacks to get close but I want the real deal info

Can I use MDE Stereo in Cubasis and Side-Chain the Drum Track into FF Pro-C for example?
Those are the coolest tools for IOS mixing... not going back to AP. I'll use AUM if I have to find a way.

Any advice appreciated.

Is this the reason to use Ableton or Logic Pro? To mix like a pro?

  • MagicDeathEye doesn’t have it.

    MagicDeathEyeStereo does.

Good point. I'll probably start using FF Pro-C for this. But Thanks. I will edit the opening statement.

Saturn 2 does support sidechainig. I use it a lot to trigger envelopes in Saturn that control the amount of distortion or feedback.

    Sorry double post.

  • The AB Wiki has a list of list of multi bus AUv3s and hosts, that also contains the effects with side-chaining support.

@jolico How many side-chain inputs does ‚MagicDeathEyeStereo‘ support in AUM ? His other compressor offers 4. I don’t have the ‚Stereo‘ version, so i can‘t check and i didn‘t find that info on the dev‘s website or in the update history.

Just one, but you can put it on a bus with multiple sources if you need to.

for final mixing/mastering i would suggest to use desktop daw .. for my last 2 albums i used Logic - just exported 4 sub groups (kick, drums, bass, synths) from NS and then finalised stem mastering in Logic ..

Wasn't Woodpressor the one that created a kind of experimental "hack" before there
was any movement for an AUv3 standard?

ITUNES STORE PRODUCT PAGEL It also has it's own side chain mechanism as currently no or very little AUv3 hosts implement a side chain.

    Aha!

Added AUv3 multi-bus (side chain) support

    Get on the "multi-bus" y'all.

I have the compressors... I need details on the DAW's other than AUM that implement
    "Multi-bus".

I probably not going to Master on my laptop. Too much work. I'm sure Cubasis 3 will add the feature around the time NS2 adds audio tracks and @Michael finishes adding features to
Loopy Pro and get's his "self-sodomizing" loop patent.

We should start a betting market on these major pre-announced events right after a developer makes us our own crypto-currency called "AudioBucks".

  • Auria Pro supports side-chaining in AUv3s, but not multi-outs.

  • OK... thanks guys.

Finding workflows to side-chain audio in AUM looks like the best answer
    right now for my needs.

I use Tonebooster Compressor (not barricade) and TB EQ in Auria Pro.

I recently learned about side chain EQing and my mind was blown. To bad I can’t find the video that was explaining it.

Here a exemple to give room in the mix for lead vocal or main melody.

1- Find the frequency range in your guitar or synth that mask or conflict with the main vocal. (If you want details how I do this let me know).

2 - Apply a EQ on the guitar with a wide bell lowering the eq range identify in step 1.

3 - Set the eq side chain as the vocal.

4 - Set the EQ mid /side to affect only the mid.

When the vocalist sing there will be a frequency dip in the eq of the guitar only on the center channel making more room for the vocalist to be heard.

I hope my explanation is clear.

Perfect. This is what I was hoping for. But I guess it has to be AP.

Someone will eventually poke in and say ZenBeats or BM3 or AEMS or Multi-Shit Studio or (wait for it) GarageBand can do it. Duh.

LOL... let me get it started then.
Hey @McD , BM3 can do this via its built-in compressor... Duh

Yes but MSS doesn't support slaving to multiple MIDI clocks and sync'ing them
to GMT. I should have mentioned that up front. I gotta' have coherent MIDI for all my devices... especially in the car. I have put a MIDI controller on my engine to change the
RPM's to play bass lines. Still, buggy but I'll get it down when it gets out of the body shop and I get my drivers license back and the insurance check shows up.

  • @brambos as a new universal midi clock and stuff app that fixes that problem. It synchs perfectly with my Porsche 911 and my Lamborghini Urus.

It was developed in collaboration with his 2 brothers, Mario and Luigi

  • mela fx has a sidechain option but i haven’t tried it

Damn, tinker... some people get access to the beta software before the 2nd class losers. My car was a classic American Motors Gremlin. Sweet ride. Original paint.

Speaker of side-chaining - they used something to get me out of the car that
sounded a bit like a chain saw.

Gremlin well now I am jealous. Sweetest ride ever.

  • Ok Gremlin is cool but I'll take a Pacer any day.

fun= let sidechain push the sides in a stereo mix..uknow drum->fabfilter pro g<-synth pads... every beat pushes the pads out LR... dam nice i tell ya.. this can be done in TB EQ too , just use MS mode ( mid side)

I forgot about Audio damage Pumphouse that I use quite a lot in Cubasis. It is fake side chain but I really enjoy the way it works and sounds.
