Loopers with input threshold

I'm looking for loopers with input threshold. Still may not do what I want (looping a cajon live) but it is the simplest thing I can think of. Hit start with threshold set, play and hopefully press stop at the right time. Any ideas?

You could have FAC Envolver send a midi CC to trigger any looper. I guess you'd need to have Envolver also mute its audio input at the same time or it would keep triggering. Either that or the Looper would need to have a trigger for record start only, and not have that be the same CC for record stop.

  • This could also be achieved with a sustain pedal couldn't it?

  • Have I led you astray? I need recording threshold. Was hoping to just find a looper with this function rather than using multiple apps.

  • @Ailerom there’s L7 (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id1485507635). I’ve had trouble running it as AU, like audio glitches or unresponsiveness, but it has worked great standalone.

No, but the options are very limited, so an alternative suggestion was in order.

  • I’ve used Drambo’s Flexi Sampler in this way, but that is probably even further afield.

  • I see. I thought there would be something out there. Seems an obvious feature. I have L7. I'll explore more deeply but can't see any threshold on the record input. Plus it seems to be fixed to recording bars which is not really what I want. I can't start recording while I'm playing but I might be able to stop it.

    Thanks for the idea ;)

  • Looperverse. Phone @Retronyms to see if there is an update coming. It does what you need except when it doesn’t and crashes instead.

One trick can be to use Koala Sampler with a dummy sequence so that it effectively becomes a threshold activated looper.

There’s an “Auto-thresh” button at the bottom left which enables an slider. If you use that then you can record for however long tou want and that will set the tempo.

All I see is a play button.

I thought about Koala. How would you set up a dummy sequence to activate recording?

  • Must be in IAA/stand alone NOT AUv3

  • @Ailerom. I interpret your question as you are looking for “auto record” which allows for recording as soon as the looper detects a signal as opposed to coming in at 1 as you’re counted in.
If that’s not the case sorry to waste your time but if so I’m not aware of an iOS looper that does this.
There are hardware loopers that perform that way but that doesn’t help you.

  • Thanks for that. At least now I know what it SHOULD look like. That button isn't there though. I'm using the Standalone version.

Figured out Looperverse. Not the best for this purpose though. Small buttons are one issue but having to set the loop live would not work.

Basically you record some silence to the pad you want to use for it, then record a hit at the start (held for the duration you require) and then delete the sample. When you record to that pad it will automatically loop it back when you finish recording the sample.

Sounds annoying but it’s set & forget really.
Threshold recording looping is annoying for me (it’s always off by a bit and needs adjustment.)

It does, but I'll give it a go. Thanks.

I found Ostinator Looper. Seems like it might be the best option I can find for what I want. (Until Looper HD Next Gen comes along). Except I can't figure out how to delete all so I can start another loop from scratch. Anyone use this looper?

  • Quantiloop does threshold recording.

In Phrase settings, scroll down ‘auto record’> set threshold.

Thanks for the tip. Expensive, but seems to do what I want also.

  • There’s a free version of Quantiloop, I’m not sure what the restrictions are, but the ‘pro’ is well worth it anyway.

It’s my most frequently used looper for live instruments (guitar and mic). I tend to use Loopy more if I’m throwing instrument apps into the mix (with AUM and AB), but QL can do that too if you need.

Excellent midi control options. The only complaint I have is it listens to all midi inputs for control messages, this creates potential to get messy if you’re tweaking a synth or using another controller for another app. Would be useful to be able to choose, though you can specify a midi channel which helps to a point.

Works particularly well for me with drumjam or funk drummer for rhythm. In fact, thumbjam, drumjam and QL was my holy jam trinity for much of lockdown (until I got funk drummer and parked my keyboard and drum pads to concentrate on guitar).

  • Plus one for quantalooop with threshold setting.

Hmm one last try: do you see the button if you start from a new session? (Hamburger menu > Sessions > New Session)

  • Doesn’t Group The Loop have this feature? I’ve only read the manual so not tested the app.

Yes it appears for about 1/10 of a second and never returns.

Thanks for the info. Quantiloop looks good from the demo version. Not sure if it is free and limited or just a trial. At present it is in trial mode. Expensive, but I might have to get this. Initially I thought Ostinator was the solution. Simple and straightforward but to be honest it is a little clunky to use, button not responding or easy to hit etc.

As luck would have it there are at least a couple to choose from. Quantiloop and Ostinator Looper for starters. I have a great looping pedal but to use it for Cajon I'd have to mic it up and I haven't found a method that sounds good. So looking at the iPad as an alternative.

Not sure. I can't see immediately where it is. Even if it is there the other thing I need is free looping. So it starts recording when I play and starts a perfect loop when I hit stop. There are plenty of loopers but many seem to only work for fixed lengths of recording. E.g. 1 bar, record to metronome. I don't want that.
