  • I think the beauty of the App Store is that it puts us in direct contact with people like Jens. How else would that happen in a professional context???

He might or might not be a genius, but all he's doing here is putting his GUIs on top of the plugins that Apple's engineers wrote. That's it. The GUI, that's all he's doing.

Agreed. The UIs are important. This is all about the wrapper, and the wrapper shouldn't allow the contents to be flicked off the screen accidentally.

I think he's made a GUI he's proud of and can't deal with the critcism.

The crazy thing is, although the Uis have major issues they're only a tweak or two from being what he thinks they are.

The actual graphic design aspect is pretty nice and the Uis are vectors so infinitely scalable.

If he made the Uis responsive to fit the screen size/ratio better and make the text big enough for us grumpy old gits they would be improved dramatically. Better contrast would also help. Red on grey can be very hard to see sometimes for example.

I wish the developer would think about some of the criticism and try and understand why the feedback is how it is rather than take things personally (his reaction to the initial critics actually encouraged some people to get personal towards him).

    Anyway.

I thibk he's actually so nearly there in terms of concept. A little relaxing of the stubbornness and there's a nice UI straining to escape from the currently nice looking but very hard to use UI. And yes it is hard to use because even though I don't need glasses yet, I find the Uisto be way too small on my phone and zooming just compounds the frustration as you can't then see what you're doing as half the UI disappears, and the responsiveness of the controls changes in a way that feels a bit off.

This is compounded when the majority of the space available to the UI Goes unused at default zoom.

TLDR: if the uis were fully responsive (changed layout to suit screen size and ratio) and had at least an option for us to make the UI text legible they would be far nicer to use.

Well said, there are definitely things to like in these UIs along with the things worthy of criticism. Small changes are all that's needed.

He seems to have addressed two issues with
his gui design in the public betas he let loose recently.
There's a hold icon in the top right hand corner in the SPECTRO series
so that it stays in the centre and the gui's scale to fit the screen now.

    Here's the 3Verb in AUM.

    I don't know about the Apple au's as I don't use them.

As for the rest of this thread, wow, it's hilarious.

That’s already far more legible. The colour changes make a big difference. It Also makes some of the other issues less of a problem.

Hopefully one day he can make the UIs responsive (I.e. change layout depending on the screen size and ratio).

For example in the second screenshot you listed the UI only uses a third of the screen so the controls are still smaller and more cramped than they could be of the UI adapted to the canvas.

Anyway. He’s not alone in having a UI that isn’t responsive. It’s not an easy task to design a UI tha shifts about and still looks good and works well.

But looking at the second screenshot again, the top two sections could be moved to take up all of the left hand side and the bottom knob section could take up the entire right hand side with the knobs rearranged to be bigger. Who doesn’t want bigger knobs? ;-)

FAC plugins are a good example of a well designed responsive plugin that uses all the space of male the UI as efficient as possible on every display. And they correspondingly are a joy to use on iPads and my iPhone. Everything is easy to see and more importantly easy to control.

Anyway. Credit where it’s due, that looks like it might be easier to use. Some of the text is still illegibly small though. Surely only legal documents should deliberately use small print though

  • Not coming from the tech world, I find prima donna app designers to be a hilarious concept.

He made a conscious design choice with his apps,
it's interesting how they are starting to shape up
now and on route they've created quite a stir.

Hopefully one day he can make the UIs responsive (I.e. change layout depending on the screen size and ratio).

I merely double clicked the AUM au title holder or
whatever it's called to show that it scales when resized.
I actually wish that AUM could get rid of that bar at the top
    talking about gui's.

    True.

SynthMaster had various problems along those lines earlier this year.

Who doesn’t want bigger knobs? ;-)

    Satisfied people??? ;-)

I don't have the FAC apps.

I won't say why right now least I offend sensitive sensibilities. :)

Processor wise I'm very happy with dRambo and MiRack.
I can pretty much pull together all the effects I need now.

  • I think he's made a GUI he's proud of and can't deal with the critcism.

if you’re referring to the apple auv3’s, i think he’s proud of wrapping the apple code. maybe he’s also proud of supplying the apple auv3’s for use in multiple hosts. i felt it was a kind gesture, especially for a dollar. the UI is good for a buck.

    criticism without suggestions isn’t useful.

constructive criticism, like klownshed’s, is helpful.

this developer is not unapproachable, as some have made him seem. frustrated, yes. frustrated mainly by apple imo( lack of documentation, etc. ). probably frustrated by a niche market ( supposition on my part ).

if anyone wants to share some constructive criticism, contact Jens by email. my experience, since his first product release, has been positive. he’s a nice guy. some might find there is a language barrier.

If he made the Uis responsive to fit the screen size/ratio better and make the text
Better contrast would also help. Red on grey can be very hard to see sometimes

i agree that the text should be larger, for ipads and iphones.

contrast and colour is changed by tapping on the tiny round icon ( usually, but not always, on the top left ), after which a slider pops up. moving the slider to the far left = black background, slider to the far right = white background.

this icon/adjustment has existed since the release of his first product.

the snowflake icon ( usually, but not always, on the top right ) locks/unlocks for resizing. unlock allows pinch to resize. also, dragging the corner of the plugin window resizes in AUM. always has.

the snowflake icon/adjustment has existed since the release of his first product.

i’ll say it again, i believe that Jens has been treated unfairly by a few on this forum. to take issue with someone because they spoke to another developer in a disagreeable manner is petty. was Jens doing this with malicious intent, or was it a misunderstanding based on differences regarding language and culture? this is a judgement for Jens and the developer in question to pronounce. i will make my purchase decisions based on the sound of the application, not on words that were exchanged on a forum.

Jens, your applications sound great. thank you also for giving us the apple auv3’s for use in other hosts. it’s nice to use them in AUM.

  • @frond

I've been in communication with the dev.

    He's a nice guy.
    He's having fun.

His apps are progressing quite nicely.
Some of the beta's are really fun to use.

He's got a couple of bugs to sort out which he knows
but overall the sound quality is really excellent.

Stereo Tool and Make Louder for instance are two
of my essential tools when it comes to mixing.

What I like is that he's trying something different.

    👍
Make Louder is in my “essentials” list.
