Need advice for a very old iPad
Hello everybody,
I think most of you were in this situation already: I‘m needing an advice on what one can do with a very old iPad (2nd generation) which is stuck on IOS 9.3.5
I‘ve got an Alesis IO Dock but this thing crackles on me like hell when I use AUM or Group the Loop e.g. So Music Production is almost off the list. I haven’t tried SunVox yet though. What else can I use this thing for nowadays?
Cheers

They still work ok as a midi controller with Lemur!
Aaah yes that‘s something I haven‘t thought of yet. Lemur is a bit pricey but I‘ll test out TouchOSC first and then FL Remote. Thanks a bunch!
Edit: on second thought, I could install Bebot and use it as an instrument.
If you don’t have it already, you can use Nanostudio 1, it’s free! Still a great app!
Got it now! thanks!
Does anybody know what that Guitar synth app was called that was almost like Geoshred but also free?
I wonder if that is a an issue of your buffer or sample rate settings. I have an iPad 2 and it is solid for me with some music apps (multitrack DAW, GarageBand, and a surprising number of synths — though the number of instances is limited).
Are you thinking MIDI Guitar 2?
MIDI Guitar by Jam Origin
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/midi-guitar/id523095780
the problem seemed more the audio interface of the IO Dock. I wanted to record some loops from my Circuit. In Group the Loop I needed to crank the buffer up to 1024 and it gave me crackles anyway. In AUM there was just gibberish and straight up noise.
hm no not that one. it was called something like Muzak or so I think...
btw TonePad is awesome! I need to check if the TenoriOn and Kaossilator app work..
I’m using my iPad 2 as a vocal to midi converter using ThumbJam. That and Boggle.
I use an IRig Midi (1) since my Alesis IO stopped working for me.
Boggle? you mean the word game? haha great!
Yes I thought of ThumbJam too. Thanks!
Yeah the IO Dock won‘t work for me either anymore. Never used it much. what a shame
There is MuseLead, which is very similar to GeoShred, but it's $1.99:

@osKar Yes the word game. It’s stuck at 32 bit. I’m addicted!
I also have Alchemy on it.
Synthecaster
or Stryke?
Do you have any of the expansion pack for Alchemy with it???
My iPad 2 is still chugging along and in regular use. I use it in a Behringer is202 dock with Garageband (for the drummer) or Funk Drummer for guitar jams. It's in my studio next to my big computer for moments when I need to stop looking at the big screen / tinkering with software and just play some music.
Loopy is still running as well as ever, but it struggles to do guitar amp sim at the same time, so I use it with a Line 6 Pod doing all the guitar work externally, then feed that into the iPaD for looping in Loopy with a drum loop loaded.
I did recently try and push how many things I could run at once for a looping set up, but I was wasting a lot of time finding out, so now I mostly just stick with the above for a drum track. I've got a post-it note on the bottom that says 'Thor' ok and 'Thumbjam' 3 ticks (this was going in to Loopy with the guitar audio through Audiobus 2). Drumjam and Thumjam together into Loopy was too much, so I exported a load of Drumjam loops instead for import into Loopy.
Also, as a standalone instrument, Samplr is still a winner for me on an iPad 2.
I have all of them. The app was in my purchased list and I was able to restore all my packs years ago. This was only possible with the old iOS/iPad. I mainly use it as sample fodder now.
The full Alchemy package has become quite sought after.
I see a bright resale future for that device! 🤗
Good to know.
hm rebirth and the tenori on ap must be somewhere... searching
I was gutted I never got iOS Rebirth in time before they pulled it. I spent ages resuscitating an old laptop to run it and then Pure Acid came and saved the day for me on my newer devices. Can you still download it if you purchased it originally? I'm not sure you can because of the licensing.
I do have RD4 by mikrosonic on mine, which I thought was / is an excellent Rebirth alternative, especially twinned with a Novation Launchkey mini - it seemed to get heavily slagged off on release for wanting people to pay to unlock the demo, glad those days are behind us...
Anyway, now having an Alchemy noodle inspired by this thread, very good fun and nice to know I have a pension scheme at last.
😂😂😂 Early retirement !
I started with ipad3 that is the cpu but retina display . I remember running some nice synths such as
Animoog and Thor (still great ones) or not to forget the good old "Caustic" as an All in One very light app.
I think running only Caustic is the best scenario !
You could also dive into Modstep as a midi looper.
Forgot to mention Samplr, grub this if on sale
those are some awesome suggestions everyone! thanks to all!
Somewhere I have a backup folder of my mobile apps. there should be all these apps you mentioned.
nice nostalgia trip :-)
I’m sure Wavestation and M1 would work on older devices.
GR-16 Grooverider works fine on mine. As does Animoog.
@osKar
Nanostudio 1, NLog Synth, Nave, Propellerheads Thor, Sumrizer - i released full album with those on iPad 2 ...
SunVox!
Perhaps I should at first try to make up my mind what I want to do with it lol
because I still got my iPad Pro with all those synths you mentioned
The idea to use it merely as a sample fodder unit sounds quite cool. maybe to record it right into the pro pad hmmm
impaktor!
yesss I found it! it‘s called Mugician!
