    impaktor!

Great idea. In my laptop/iPad integrated rig I use a low end IRig audio interface to get the sound of a Roland pad into Impaktor on my iPad Air 1 and connect the audio out to a Focusrite audio interface that connects to my computer. Your iPad 2 becomes a KORG Wavedrum! Considering the original WD was two grand, it’s a good deal.

yeah that’s the idea. I always wanted a wavedrum lol but Impaktor is awesome!
anyhow now need a decent Audio Interface for both iPads. Too bad the Novation Audiohub is‘nt available anymore.
Does anyone know if the Behringer U202 will suffice for my needs? I heard it‘s class compliant...

  • I was having crackling issues with my ioDock - turned out I had to shoot the XLR with some contact cleaner...

  • Last I checked with mine. SunVox, GeoShred, GR-16, Modstep, MIDIFire, AUM for audio recording only, and a few others were working quite well. I have abandoned my iPad 2 though for now. It is more trouble than it is worth as I have 2nd gen pro and iPad Air 2, so at that point it is pretty redundant.

ok will test that out for sure - thanks!

If I'm honest I'm not ready to smack my 2nd gen iPad into the bin. That's why I'm picking 32bit apps which are not on my Pro iPad.

I've got 3 app folders now: Performance apps like Impaktor, Groovebox apps like Bleep!box and Midi apps like Patch Morpher.

What was that Figure look-alike called, that had also more synths and tracks?

  • I recently was passed down an ipad mini 1 that won’t go further than 9.3.5 as well and when I’m charging my other ipad (a mini 2), I’ve made some music in Garageband that thankfully can be airdropped to the mini 2 to complete there. I’ve got Bleass Groovebox on it too, which I’ve recorded on Garageband via Interapp audio. Ditto for Beat-Machine (but I haven’t yet used it on Garageband recordings yet).

Beat-Machine? I haven‘t heard of that one before. will try that one out!

btw Remix Live works on IOS 9! Too bad Launchpad and Blocs Wave are 64bit.
Also I played around with the Alesis IO Dock and the noise always appears when I freshly start an app (AUM, ElasticFX etc)
After I turn off the dock and back on, voila the sound is clean and clear. very suspicious...

The ioDock has a strange kind of error (occasionally) that makes the digital audio clock drift away into oblivion. It‘s probably related to the charging section... because I didn‘t experience it any more since the internal charger died.
The latter can easily be fixed by soldering a USB cable (only power lines) to a certain location of the board and plug the other end into the regular iPad charger.
The main supply then gets along with a much smaller 6V unit.
But I never could figure out what exactly triggered the error... which btw was also reported with the Behringer lookalike.

I see, thanks for clearing up! I actually was about to look for a used Behringer dock. Now I don‘t need to :-)

That soldering job sounds quite complicated. I think I‘ll stick to my power on/off workaround for the time it still works.

Personally, I've never had that issue. I'm to assume it's all in what you are driving and how?

I think some people don't even realize that the Alesis ioDock works for every iPad ever made. I literally have an iPad1 that plays with it.

  • As for the original question -
My iPad1 is solid for MIDI recording/controlling purposes. Usually NanoStudio is great for what can be done. It can act as a sample player for live drums, as well as an "always on" single MIDI controllable synth. I don't know if there is any Ableton Link capable clock app, but I just gave up on it ever being in close-sync with most gear. Personally, well yeah, i got the Alesis iO Dock so I have din-midi or usb things which means it doesn't have to "work" any more than it has to so I don't use wifi or bluetooth connections to handle MIDI.
Of course, using MIDI Designer or Lemur would give you a way to build a custom control surface.

  • A way to see what apps will work on older devices.

    https://findoldapps.com/us/Music/5.1.1/ipad/updated_date/desc/30/1/Midi

Simply select the iOS version you have on that device and search to find what you can still download from the App Store on an old device

  • Oops didn’t mean to give you the midi search link... but it’ll do the trick.

I wonder if there is a Serial to Lightnig adapter for newer iPads. Though my Pro iPad won't fit into the dock however

interesting! I only did one song in the past with NanoStudio. And that is with stock samples :-D I haven't even bothered with recording something in the past.
Midi Designer and Lemur are mentioned very often. I'll look into these! I've got Patch Morpher, Touch OSC and FL Remote.
I don't have much gear nowadays though. I want to sell all my stuff that I don't need any more. minimalism for the win! :-D

  • Thanks Poppadocrock! very helpful

Serial to Lightning? You mean a 30-Pin to Lightning connector? Sure, they're $9. My iPad doesn't FIT in the thing well. But it can totally sit in it and be stable - I do have a bic pen wedged in so the bottom of the screen doesn't fall beneath the plastic lip.

yes that's what I meant sorry. 9$? what a bargain! I'll have to try that out, thanks!

  • The 30pin to Lightning things are (for obvious reasons) cheaper than they used to be, but the ultra-cheapos (seen them for 1€) may be only charging adapters. My neighbour had one...
@boberto the ioDock loosing sync wasn‘t a regular „feature“, but it not totally rare either.
It occured (of course) only with digital audio apps, but randomly and not CPU load dependant.
I‘m an experienced DAW user and couldn‘t trace the error, as hard as I tried.
In fact I can‘t remember it with an iPad 1 (latest version IOS-5) and atm that combo is still on duty.

It does work nice with SamplR, iElectribe, CMI and iMPC (1st version), which is actually cool with 1 instrument per track to keep the editing simple.

nope, it was Beatonal! looks kind of ugly but it is a better Figure app.

  • Beatonal is awesome. With $2.99 IAP you can send 4 channels of Virtual midi Out.

Truth. I would definitely heed the above advice - @osKar , mine was def a "$30" one.

yep I purchased one on ebay right away! great tip!
edit: if this works I‘ll crack open the top and make room for my pro iPad :-D
