I notice on twitter both Eddie Van Halen and also Bono are trending. Bad news on both fronts I’m afraid.

Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love / Van Halen

  • That’s really shocking. I think of him as being forever young.
    RIP

  • R.I.P.

Tonight I’ll be on the Nembrini 8180 in his honor.

    He’s still alive

  • Hahaha!!!!

  • Yeah, really rough news. I know he had a variety of health issues, but the news still hits hard. I'm only 39, but his music was an integral part of my formative years. And if you're a guitar player who plays rock or metal, his influence is completely inescapable, whether or not you liked VH's music. I don't think it's much of stretch to compare his influence on that genre to what Michael Jackson was for Pop/R&B.

I could never play like that!
    He was so unique.......

  • Wow!!! Don’t know what to say. 🥺

  • RIP Eddie. So sad.

This tune got a lot of people into making music, including me.

I may take that challenge. Tribute to the king of course!

  • RIP Eddie Van Halen. One of the all-time greats.

  • There is a small handful of guitarists that influenced my playing, and he is one. RIP

Edit: here’s a rendition of Eruption I uploaded to YT about 10 years ago. I’ll have to dust off my hammer ons and pull offs and do a proper tribute.

Oh no doubt! That’s what I was just telling a coworker: “this is my MJ”

I’m still at work today, but I guarantee you that I will be bawling myself to sleep tonight... 😭

  • Also a great keyboard player.

    One of my favourite singles.

  • One of the greatest. What he did for the guitar and amps world is unbelievable. An huge loss.
    Rock in peace Master!

    Thank you,
    The Nembrini Audio’s team

  • This must have been amazing to hear live. One of my fave VH songs

Well he did play the riff in Beat It after all

    Steve lukather played the riff😢.

  • He changed (like Hendrix before him) the level of proficiency one needed to be considered a rock guitar player. Even though he didn't invent any of the techniques that he used, he brought them to a new level that made a lot of his contemporaries go "oh, crap, i guess I need to practice" and to people younger, it changed what they aimed for and what they started with.

His impact was huge even on people (like me) that weren't fans of the band. He was just so obviously getting so much out of the guitar -- it made you want to try stuff out. One of those rare guys that achieved mass popularity that was respected and admired by esoteric virtuosos. And he really appreciated other virtuosi (really tried to help Allan Holdsworth reach a bigger audience).

Amazing that EVH played the Beat It solo for free. This and other details on Steve Lukather's site:
    https://www.stevelukather.com/music/discography/1982/thriller.aspx?ref=/music/discography/1982.aspx

EVH rocking out live with MJ - in later years, other players like John Mayer got flack for not playing the solo properly but EVH himself didn't bother trying to recreate his own solo either - just improvised:

Oh it’s definitely Eddie’s solo that ended up on the record, I was going to say. Lukather apparently did the production and wrote/performed the famous rhythm track.

Eddie improvised everything he did. Even in the studio. Never saw him play Eruption the same way twice.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear oh Christ!

The friends I had back then who drank Schitiz Malt Liquor talls (known as The Bull!)

Most are dead, but the rest require kidney dialysis...

Thank God Eddie got off that shit! 👍🏻
