I come here to show my respects and say "goodbye master". :'(

  • I somehow missed this scene from Better Off Dead

Van Halen emerged towards the end of the 70s, bridging the gap between the classic metal of the early 70s and the emerging hair/speed metal of the 80s. Their sound combined both the darkness of metal with the upbeat energy of power pop, somehow managing to be both rude and raunchy and slightly wholesome at the same time. Eddie’s guitar was a Frankenstrat of his own creation, combining qualities of both the Gibson and Fender sound. His playing, a synthesis of classic rock roots and innovative new techniques, was incredibly precise, melodic, and original. He pushed the envelopes of speed with two-handed tapping, and took the whammy bar to new dive-bomb depths. And when that wasn’t enough, he broke new ground in the quest for radical new guitar tones with crazy techniques like holding a power drill to the pickup. His playing excelled at both solid hooks-and-riff rhythmic concepts, and lyrical melodic soloing. Edward Van Halen was a true virtuoso whose career pushed the evolution of rock guitar to new heights of shred. R.I.P., Maestro.
