So I’ve been looking at the Launchpad Pro Mk3 and it’s extremely overkill for anything I’d ever want to so. For the folks who voted for it, what are some of the features you’re going to use most often?

@blueveek Definitely clip launching with the MK3 Pro. Had mine a week now so still getting my head around the possibilities.

Yes and as @MrBlaschke said maybe combining the 4 sequencer parts to an Atom part. Basically how I read it is the Pro 3 is basically the X plus it has 4 sequencers and extra function buttons and more custom modes as extra.

Until we see the Atom 2 in the flesh it's a bit hard to see how the 2 will work together.

I should've phrased that a little differently: Compared to the X or Mini Mk3, what specific features prompted you to chose the Pro in the first place (nevermind Atom)?

@blueveek I think after watching Loopop video comparison he sold it to me going for the LP Pro Mk3. Definitely for having the sequencers extra custom scenes up to 8. Having the extra function buttons for better work flow. I hoping it's more future proofed in the long run.

Coming from owning the original LP mini years ago and selling it I always missed having a grid style controller in my setup.

I can see now, how far these control surfaces have evolved.

That’s different. I was looking for an Aftertouch Controller and an (simple) external Stepsequencer.
This combined made up the decision for me.

  • After having watched the above Pro vs X video, why oh why can only the Pro change the midi channel on-the-fly. This point is always so annoying with most controllers.

I guess when routed through Atom the issue is a lesser concern, but still.

I hope that your plans won't lock out the de-facto standard Arturia Beatstep and Launchpad mk2 or Mini/Mini mk2.

  • Let the dam app be released before requests about all your controllers

  • Let the damn developer decide when to release the app, and answering his questions about controllers might damn help, damn.

i selected other as i hope it works with circuit !

And by extension hopefully the Circuit Monostation!

BTW I own AKAI APC40 MK2 and it's IMO the best controller for live sets and production and I think it's quite overlooked. It has:
    1. Clip launch grid (like e.g. Launchpad)
    2. 8 channels, each with fader, endless LED knob (with 3 buttons to switch its function), solo, mute, record, A/B assignment, focus button, stop all for each of 8 channels + master fader.
    4. 4-point arrows for navigation within tracks and scenes
    3. Macros section with 8 LED endless knobs and optional 8 LED buttons that can be either programmed or has functions within Ableton like device navigation, bank switching, device lock, digging deeper into device chain etc...
    5. Other basic stuff like play/stop, record, metronome, tempo knob, tempo tap, tempo nudge, headphones level,...

Basically, it has all the nice things Launchpad has but many more extra while it's only a little bit bigger. The endless LED knobs themselves are worth it. It's really a complete setup for live sets and very convenient production. If this has integration on iOS, it'd be incredible pleasure to play with.

Quick Q on this one: is the controller, especially the clip launch section, fully midi mappable? Manual / user guide is pretty thin...

I dug quite deep into the manual and what's possible with this controller as I did some programming for remembering the knobs within Mozaic, enabling the active channel switching etc...
Long story short: You definitely can map the pads - they send good old MIDI note on/off messages. You can also control each pad LEDs by sending the same note on/off messages back to the controller (velocity controls the color and blinking). So you can MIDI map these to any app that allows MIDI mapping. With apps like Mozaic you can even go crazy with LEDs and program e.g. a light show known from Launchpads, or use it for any helpful visual feedback.

If you ask whether you can change the built-in values per pad to change it to send e.g. different notes, I am not 100% sure if this is possible. But AKAI have some MIDI remapping software for desktop and maybe there it's possible. These APC40 (both MK1 and MK2) are well known for being "hackable", there are many crazy scripts for e.g. Max4Live, so I'd expect even this option. In the worst case using some custom firmware.
But anyway, when using something like Mozaic, you don't need re-mapping as you can do simple MIDI filtering, so probably that's not even something you should care about.

I have some Mozaic script in the making which tries to make it as much similar to Ableton experience as possible. One day I hope I'll publish some example AUM project with some basic routing for e.g. using headphones cue, crossfader, solo/mute, channel switching etc... Currently I am waiting which one of LK / Atom will be the first to provide controller support for triggering scenes, but both look very promising

  • @skrat

Thanks so much for the detailed answer! Will be buying one. Fingers crossed on Atom =)

  • All the new launchpad models / mk3’s will be automatically mapped with Atom2?

Last I heard, the Launchpad X and Launchpad Mini MK3 will be supported from launch. Support for further launchpad models is planned for a future update.

  • Novation Launchpad Mini and possibly Midi Fighter 3D
