One thing I have never had is a natural ear for just jumping to any note I hear.

Suggest singing scale patterns over a tanpura drone. That will improve your relative pitch chops in no time.

Sounds interesting. Do you think singing is better than playing? Just wondering how that can help with transferring what I hear to the fretboard.

Yes, I think singing is better than playing. If you can sing a melody, then you know for certain you are hearing it correctly. But if you are unused to singing, that can be another challenge.

Put on a backing track to solo over.. record a solo using nothing but your voice.. play back your vocal solo.. learn the parts that catch your ear.. notes + phrasing.. transfer to the guitar which has the great quirk of having the exact same note in a few places on the fretboard.. figure out the most comfortable fingering.. this way you avoid patterns.. even try playing the whole thing on 1 string (if possible).. sing the notes that you're playing.. rinse + repeat.. this is the beginning of finding your voice on the guitar.. IT'S ALL YOU!

Also, try a call + response session with just your voice + guitar.. sing a short melody/riff.. try to play it immediately after on the guitar.. start with shorter licks.. start with 2 notes.. or 2 beats, 4 beats.. think of it like a blues progression..
    bar 1 = vocal lick,
    bar 2 = guitar copy
    bar 3 = vocal call
    bar 4 = guitar response

This can work wonders for the “sing it, play it” technique.. the more you do it, the better you’ll get.. and they’re melodies that you were hearing at that moment.. from your musical vocabulary..

I like this approach. I have done a bit of this but it just feels too silly with all the people around me. It is a good reminder though so I appreciate that. When I get a some time alone I'll try this some more.

Also gave Thesys a go and it was quite good. Egoist not so much but I will try to find a sample that suits better. Starting to find the sound really important. It needs to be very clean and unFXed. Anything with strings seems to be my preference although simple sounds using a basic waveform are ok too.

  • @Ailerom i was there a short time ago. Xynth is one of the greatest sequencer / randomizer you can find, very easy to use, give it a try...

Isn't anyone going to respond with:

You can do that with Drambo.

Probably because they'd have to provide the Random Sequencer patch to back it up.
So, I'm NOT saying it. But @rs2000 could build one in a couple hours with controls for
random, pick-a-scale and random-scales. But you never know what has his attention.

Funny coincidence. I just started one two weeks ago.
I have no time to develop it further atm but I'm not the only Drambo guy here,

    True.

I've been putting together a sequencer patch but
it isn't random and it's a work in progress.
You have to draw it in.

feel free to take this one as a basis for your own experiments and enhancements!

    I'll check this out.

    Thanks.

  • Does anyone know if there is a monophonic option for Zynthesizr so the random option produces a melody rather than a mix of chords and single notes?

  • @Ailerom not that I can see

Yeah, me neither. Looks pretty good otherwise. 2 things would make it better for me, random trigger, rather than on or off and melodic option so there are no chords created.

@Ailerom didn’t think about this one ... what do you think ? @YuriT is this possible to make ?

    have you tried Xynthesizr ?

Ended up buying it. A bit hard to tell from the YouTube videos but it is a really good option. Even just the default preset, choose a scale, set a rhythm and just randomize the y axis. Would be good if I could just hit something to randomize once but I just hit it on and off. Works really well.

  • I love Xynthesizr, used it in my BandDelay vid, really nice combo
