  • Patch 148 FM Slap is the spiritual successor to the DX7 Bass 1 “Danger Zone” bass. I can’t quit using it on tracks.

  • Is there any iOS fm synth that is similar to opsix ? (it reminded me of Alesis ION)

I would like to get an OPsix if it was a desktop/rack module, which looks like it won't happen unfortunately...

    Probably NFM.
Or build one in Drambo if you want the real deal.

There’s really not with its amount of waveshapes and amount of modes of operators (FM, filtered FM, wavefold, ring mod etc). It basically doubles as a digital “virtual analog” synth since it has those waveforms and a multi-mode main filter as well. No, it doesn’t have the built-in warmth of an analog, but oddly I think this makes for a better sound for a lot of modern dance music that most members of this forum do. Plus, the dedicated knobs and screen diving is way quicker than any iOS synth I’ve used. It’s a breeze.

Building anything like this in Drambo would be a shoddy approximation. It’s not a totally revolutionary synth or anything, but it’s so well-done and both compact and feature-packed that I can’t do anything but rave about it. I thought the Minilogue was a toy, the Moog Grandmother was overpriced for what it is and sounded too drab, but this is a purchase I absolutely love and have no regrets over paying full price for it.

FM synths just weren’t made for iPad, where you have to use and adjust so many fiddly knobs or sliders, because doing it well and creating a nuanced patch requires precision with op levels and envelope shaping that the touch screen can’t really offer without painstaking effort.

Pink and blue noise added! That's going to be great for my baby reveal gigs!

Seriously, though, this is really cool. I just got an OpSix a few weeks ago and haven't even learned the features it already had. I'm starting to become a fan of Korg.

  • Thanks for the heads up. Would’ve never checked for this on my own. Still not used to this world of firmware updates on existing hardware.

Between the opsix and the new Sequential Take 5, I feel well-covered for the stuff I Iike to do and can stop lusting over an OB-6 for now.

  • The new presets are pretty impressive, and nice job on organizing them into types. The update is worth it for the effect operator comb filter effect all alone. Nice job Korg, I’m surprised at such a substantial update.

    That piano sound! 😍

Korg really have been doing good jobs recently. I'm still in love with my Wavestate and the new sample and wavesequence editors which are outstanding tools.
The synth editor is almost a composition tool on its own.
Not to speak of the quality of presets and samples.

I also find the Opsix really interesting. German music school Sinee is currently doing a one synth challenge, where some well known techno producers, including Robert Babicz, create a track just with the Opsix. Unfortunately in German, but maybe worth a look at the end of the video to see their results.

    Nice vid.

I got a Take 5 after months of the opsix being the only hardware synth I focused on, and going back to analog subtractive makes me feel like there’s very little to do or program. Luckily, the sound is still great and classic.

Said it multiple times in this thread alone probably, but the ease of programming an FM synth that Korg achieved is really great. I honestly still haven’t gotten much into the additional operator modes; majority of my time has been spent just using good ol sine waves (12-bit, of course).

Some of it can be overkill, but there’s a lot of fun to be had getting subtle glitchy effects just so as you slowly move the mod wheel up and down.

Looks like this Sequencer is on sale for $199 in the US:

  • Why did Korg discontinue the Opsix? supply shortages?

Likely opposite. Excess stock and not enough sales.

Yamaha has steadier track record of marking discontinued products as Discontinued on their website

Korg should follow suit. Kronos 2 for example is still on their website without a Discontinued type indicator, even though it is widely known to be discontinued.

Search on online shops such as Sweetwater return a result along the lines of "Opsix is no longer available" so it's natural to assume it's discontinued.

I have not found any statements by Dan Phillips - longtime Korg product manager - on the state of the hardware Opsix, although it's possible I didn't use the right Google search terms.
