I don't judge anyone who digs randomization and generators. It's just no fun for me.

This sums it up perfectly. I do play around with R&G, but just for entertainment. Other than that, it leaves me feeling empty.
Being fed through a tube gets the job done but its nothing like eating. Again - that's just me, not a reflection on anyone else.

Of course, taking random or generated stuff and arranging it into something is an expression, and it does come from you. It's just not satisfying for me personally.

  • You could also do it the other way around: Hack your beat in on a different sequencer, Drambo has pads (and soon AUv3 support so you don't even have to use another AUv3 host).

Or record the perfectly qantized loop, load and slice it in Flexi and use your finger tapping recorded by the iDevice microphone to advance sequencer steps and let them groove to your finger beat:

Most of pad tapping drum recording people end up quantizing the performance and then it’s like you programmed it. Otherwise you realize you can’t play on top of it with other instruments bc it sounds bad. You can’t even use an arpeggiator if you don’t quantize it.
Tapping it just helps you get the idea quicker out of your head. If you can play to a metronome🙂

  • I’m not talking about swing, imperfections or human imperfections, that’s another matter. It’s exactly about “getting the idea out of your head”.

Randomizers put ideas in your head while tapping gets them out. I’m totally in for randomizers, they’re great and can really open up new unexpected paths or help you out of a creative block. It’s the omission of the performance rec option that worries me.
