I pulled the trigger on a Motu M2 after much appreciated info from this site (thanks JoyceRoadStudios). In the end, size was the only issue with the M2 and I can get around that. However, I want to be sure this can connect directly to a new iPad Air 2020 (not PRO) with the USB-C to USB-C cable that comes with the iPad and that don't need anything else to make them work together.

    This discussion leaves some doubt:

Check page 17 of the manual here https://cdn-data.motu.com/manuals/usb-c-audio/M_Series_User_Guide.pdf

According to the manual you have to use a powered hub with a Lightning connector based iPad.

It may actually work without one, sometimes USB interfaces do. But, it depends on the iPad side deciding if the device is drawing more power than the Lightning spec allows.

Yes you are totally right, lightning connector based iPads and iPhones always need the camera connection kit. Many interfaces come packaged with only a usb cable expecting people to have older devices, so they can plug in the usb into the kit and have the lightning from the iOS device also plugged in.

That being said, isn’t the new iPad Air USBc and not lightning? From what I’m reading on apple’s site, new iPad Air comes with a 20w usbc power adapter, and the iPad Pro comes with an 18w.

The new iPads don't use lightning at all. The following suggests that this is going to work. They use the word, "should"........

Yeah, the new iPad Air is USB-C and I'm guessing will work fine. The new iPad (not air) is still lightning and probably won't work fine without a powered hub even with the CCK.

A straight USB-C to USB-C cable should work from the Air to the MOTU.

You will be all good. As I mentioned I use mine bus powered only with the white cable from the iPad. No problem even with phantom power. But it will drain your battery, also when you add Bluetooth. So realistically you may only get 2-3 hours, but I wouldn’t know exactly.

I feel like I’m missing something when I bought and use the bus-powered Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd gen with my 2020 iPad Pro but don’t see anyone typically mentioning it. Why is it out of favor? Hard to tell how these alternatives differentiate themselves.

The differences are minuscule. The Focusrite interfaces are also great. You could argue over a few decibels of extra max system gain or dynamic range. Like the SSL, motu is a new hot flavor, and it has the best reviewed headphone input and driver. But at the end of the day, the actual differences between something like SSL, motu, Audient, Focusrite etc... could come down to flavors and sounds of the preamps and converters. None of these devices are 100% transparent, so people have their favorite flavors.

This video quantifies minuscule difference by the power of re-recording... 500 times!

Yes I’ve totally watched this video, it wouldn’t necessarily sway me to pick one interface over the other, though it is informative.

I had used a friend’s Focusrite 2i2 before and thought it was pretty good. I’ve been accustomed to Apogee audio quality in the past with Quartet use years ago. Their jam plus as a single channel guitar/dynamic mic input sounds and records phenomenally, and the headphone amp is stellar and useful. It’s the best in its tiny tiny size class. When it came time to buy a proper desktop interface I narrowed down to SSL and Motu. The new Apogee desktop and Arturia Audiofuse are certainly very appealing, but way too expensive and way more than I need right now. I played with the Xtone Pro for a bit too because I needed midi, but it didn’t do it for me as an interface.

So my issue with SSL was that SSL regular has no midi i/o and SSL+ with midi i/o is considerably more expensive than the competition while still being 2in/4out and not 4/4. The 4K feature is certainly appealing for a flavor option within the same interface, but it’s not really anything you can’t EQ or add post using the DAW itself or plugins, and when activated it is baked into your recording so you can’t undo it. Felt the same way about the Air button on the Focusrite, why not just get the same result in post?

In Julian Krause’s video I posted earlier in the thread, where he rates the headphone amps and performance of many interfaces in this class, the SSL performed quite low. I realize his videos aren’t the end-all-be-all, but it was convincing enough that the motu ranked first by a longshot and swayed me to get the m4. Headphone quality is an important aspect of the user experience, even if it doesn’t directly affect recording quality. The Motu m2/m4 scores highest in almost every other category anyway. The SSL looks amazing though. Julian’s video was very enlightening regarding how certain interfaces only perform well with higher impedance headphones.

Sorry for hijacking this thread, I had been shopping for an interface for months and the M4 has been totally perfect for the past few weeks. To be honest the competition in this class is almost identical, so it’s just about what flavor you prefer. Some people love the SSL preamps, others love the Audient. And some say don’t even bother with bus powered preamps....

I'm a big fan of Focusrite. 4i4 is great. It's what I would recommend, as it has MIDI DIN connectors and room to grow.

The iPad Pro can power it.

I’ve used a Focusrite iTrack dock for years with my Air 2. Very satisfied, it was nice to be able to plug my usb only midi controller directly into that interface. Now with my new Air 4 I followed @JoyceRoadStudios advice and will have a new Motu M2 at my house tomorrow. I also listened to @jonmoore’s advice and got a Apanage powered hub that hopefully I’ll be able to plug my iPad, Motu, and Nektar 61 all into and they’ll all behave and play nice. Guess I’ll see in a couple days, but thanks in advance to the collective wisdom of the forum. I’ll let you know what I think of the flavor!

  • Just as I was about to pull the trigger on an Apogee One I found out about its compatibility issues with the new iPads with usb-c. Thank you all for this highly informative post expanding on other options for audio interfaces that work with the new iPad Pro!

I think the MOTU would be great if you can find one in stock, I’ve had the MOTU M4 ordered on back order for a little over 2 months now.

    Have the MOTUs been discontinued?

I think it has to do with supply issues due to some Chinese virus thing... Probably get resolved eventually.

    Two weeks... max.
