iCloud, GoogleDrive... Do you back up?. How?. Panicking...

Hi,
My 2020 iPad pro just went back. Fortunately its still under coverage, im waiting for pickup and repair. I have so many ideas, unfinished and almost finished songs... and no backup.
The provided iCloud space was obviously not enough for automatic backups. Im afraid ill loose it all. Im not letting this happen again.
How do you backup your iPad?. I have a big GoogleDrive storage account, but as far as i know Gdrive is "on demand" meaning it wont backup everything.. Im confused by this... Say i got projects in Drambo, Zenveats, AUM... without manually backing up every project to some service... Will iCloud save all this app´s data?. Is tehre a way to the same with Google Drive?.
I know in Zenbeats, for example, i can backup to Gdrive but its manual and you end up not doing it, plus its not synced when changed. i want it automatically. Fail safe.
How do you guys do it?.

  • Online backup is not an option for me.
    Much too slow.
But I always have a desktop computer at hand and a large external hard drive on which I can store a full device backup.

Backup of individual apps' data on iOS is, IMHO, just as flawed today as it was 10 years ago. You still depend on each app developer in terms of accessing your own user data: Some apps will not let you back up anything, some support Files.app and/or iTunes file sharing and some more advanced apps like Nanostudio 2 or Drambo even let you access their full user file system.

A full device backup is the only method that will archive all your data, although this is no longer true for the apps themselves because Apple have killed that feature and in the worst case, you have your data but can't make use of it because the app has been removed from the AppStore completely.

  • I have an old Mac Mini with a huge hard disk that is too slow to use for anything, but it's still good for backups so I use it to backup all my iDevices (you know, by physically connecting them with cables and such 😄) through iTunes once a month. I'm too old for this cloud business!

It is important to know that not all apps back up all their data in iCloud backups. I back my iPads to desktop with imazing

Me too. Imazing is amazing. 😀

  • A few months ago I somehow managed to delete my entire AudioShare files.
After kicking the cat and smashing a few cups i realised it was a fresh start.
My aim now is to try to finish a track and then move on to the next. After I am happy with a set number I will upload to bandcamp and job done.
I had stacks of unfinished loops, tracks and sounds that I deleted yet I probably would never have used them again.

  • iCloud is the easiest way. It's only a dollar for 50GB and 2.99 for 200GB.

    I’m already paying Google Drive.
Can you choose what goes in the backup?. 50GB might be enough for ongoing stuff. I wouldn’t to waste space with the actual apps but only the data.

But iCloud will backup ALL apps’ data right?. Like Drambo, Zenbeats... I know they all have their own peculiar way of storing, but I’m guessing iCloud does it all... guess it’s not true with Google Drive.

Ok, so this goes with my previous comment. Some app data might not be backed up?. Sucks.

This iMazing... It’s through WiFi, right?. That’s handy. I hate iTunes. I see it’s 45€ but there’s a free version... It’s a little pricey just to test. Can you expand on what version you use and how?

  • Related... Has anyone had a sudden death on a 2020 iPad Pro?.
I was watching a YouTube video in bed, not even stressing the thing, and it just pooofed. Like when you turned off an old tv. Just went black. Been black since. Nothing.
I have 2 other iPads, older obviously, never had a problem except for the usual battery life. I’ve had this one for a couple of months and it’s dead. Don’t wanna blame Drambo, but hey, it’s suspicious.
I’m pissed and worried, and I did have a couple of really good songs there that’ll be gone forever.

As I mentioned up-thread, iCloud backups do not necessarily back up everything on your iPad. Some apps do not back up to iCloud and I don't think there is anyway to know which don't. For example, Auria Pro's data doesn't (or at least it didn't used to) get backed up in iCloud backups. I know there are others, too. I really recommend backing up to desktop as a fail-safe if you have a lot of data. ALSO, if you do have a lot of data, you will be thankful when you restore. Restoring many gigabytes of data from the cloud is very time consuming.

I have the latest version of iMazing. If you don't want to pay, just use iTunes to backup (or if you have a recent MacOS, iOS backups to desktop don't use iTunes -- but some other mechanism -- but it is there and free).

You can backup through wi-fi with iMazing or iTunes but I do my backups tethered because it is much faster.

And yes, some apps may not be backing up to the cloud.

iOS backups don't include app binaries (either to desktop or to cloud) (that ended years ago--which actually sucks because a restore will download the most recent version of any app you had installed not necessarily the version you had installed).

Also, if backing up to the cloud -- make sure you have enough cloud space for the backup data AND whatever data you want to keep in the cloud.

Yeah, you’re right. But fact is I never set time aside to backup.
Apple is hateful sometimes. The file app system is bunkers. And I obviously can’t use my drive account... and my iPad is obviously over 50GB (1€/month) but well under 200GB (3€), and there’s obviously no guarantee that my songs and stuff will be backed up cos apparently it depends on the app... 🤬
This was supposed to be fun.

  • I use ICloud 200GB, also maybe once every quarter I back up on iTunes on my pc. Then I also put some stuff on google drive, some on external hd.

Backing up one's devices (and computers) should be a habit for everyone. I can't tell you how many times having complete backups (both desktop and iOS) has saved me. Backing up to desktop only takes a few minutes after the first backup.

  • That’s news to me that iCloud misses some data. Can’t say I’ve experienced that.

Any experience on a dead iPad?. The fact that it doesn’t display anything, just plain black might suggest it’s battery or power related. Right?. If it was the drive it’d probably display an error or hang up In the logo... I hope it’s the battery, I don’t know if AppleCare will try to save the drive/data , highly doubt it.

Is it possible for a peripheral to have caused this haddock?. Seems unlikely, but just in case. I was using one of these. This Satechi is a prett6 popular product, I researched before buying. It wouldn’t make for a usb peripheral to do this damage anyway, right?

    Cheers!

Btw. I totally skipped on the “you should do backups” because I know, I know, I know, I Know...
I Do at work but that’s boring work stuff.
Backup comments, like telling a guy who’s puking his brains out “you shouldn’t have drunk that last one”.

It entirely depends on the app. While most apps include their data in iCloud backups not all do. Auria Pro, for example, doesn't (or at least that was the case as recently as about a year ago). I know there are others but don't recall which. And there isn't any way that I know of to check which apps don't include their data.

I found this surprising when I first heard about it. See : https://www.auriaapp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16132

What happens when you plug it in to power?

I had a phone that did that and eventually was able to do a hard reset (some voodoo combination of pressing various buttons) and it booted up.

  • Hi,
On android tablets I hold the power button down until it reboots. Happens twice a year on my 2012 lenovo. Try to find out how to do a hard reset.

I think, the only full backup will be with iTunes to a PC or Mac, witn encryption enabled - otherwise, parts may be missing.

Of course iMazing or other software may be similar, i did not check them so far.

I never do this though, only when installing a new device... but then, it works fairly well - even if it takes ages, as the Apps are not installed from the computer then, but only install over net from the App Store again.

This was better earlier, when those Apps could directly be installed from the computer, over iTunes.

I backed up my old Air 2 to iCloud and restored it on a new iPad Pro - it downloaded everything as-is and intact without losing any files, projects, etc. That includes Cubasis and LumaFusion projects and files that are not integrated with iCloud. It also restored all the photos and videos.

As for the apps, it is better to get rid of the old versions not compatible with the current O/S anyways. iCloud restore works that way.

That may be the case when you don’t have enough storage on your iCloud account. Apple doesn’t offer overdraft protection when available space in our iCloud account runs out. I got my Cubasis and LumaFusion projects and files (not integrated with iCloud) restored from iCloud on the new iPad Pro. It also restored all the photos and videos from Photos app. I verified all the apps - no files were lost.

iCloud restore is more convenient - just kick it off overnight. Mine finished restoring in just a few hours.

Again, see above. Per a thread on the Auria Pro forum, Auria projects don't get backed up...which surprised me.
