  • I've not even clicked on the poll yet but I've got a good idea of what it'll look like.

  • Yep... that's what I thought.

I understand the sentiment, but a bad idea i'm afraid.

Current state at time of post.

  • Mark me down in the "no" camp....this place runs well as it is..free forming and no pressure....and some nice people hanging about too....

  • N O N O + N O

  • In fairness I do think OP was at least half joking. Hope so anyway!

  • Here for the ratio, obviously.

But before we all pile on @robosardine, he is trying to address the fact that the forum has grown to such a size that the tone that many of us loved is coming under strain. There are a LOT of new people here — and probably a lot of people new to iOS music making.

I wonder if the forum is approaching Dunbar's number? Not sure how it applies to social media, but it's based on the idea that the primate brain (i.e., ours) can really only manage 150 relationships.

  • Yeah, I haven’t lost any respect for the OP. It’s a good social experiment type question to see where the forum stands.

  • Yeah, he wanted to provoke an interesting discussion, mission accomplished

  • While I don't think rating forum members is the solution, I do think the forum would benefit from people (and I am never sure whether this makes most sense via PM or comments in a thread) being more thoughtful in how they express themselves. One can be critical, honest and kind at the same time.

I am puzzled by the attitude that some have "this is the internet, toughen up". That kind of sums up why it isn't welcoming.

It is possible to convey negative opinions and criticism without being mean/dismissive/thoughtless/hurtful.

Making excuses for people that make devs not want to hang out here just seems weak to me -- and doubles-down on it being unwelcoming.

Do we want devs and artists to be welcome here? If so, we should pause before posting messages and ask ourselves if we were being helpful or hurtful in how we expressed ourselves.

If it irks one to think about how one expresses oneself -- maybe this forum isn't the right place to be posting.

There are quite a few devs who have reappeared briefly after a time to post about some new cool app -- where they have mentioned that they have been scarce because of the attitude some people here cop. It has been more than one or two thin-skinned devs saying this.

I'd say that one has to have a pretty thick skin as a dev to pay stick around for an extended period. And kudos to them. But it shouldn't have to be that way.

  • Badges? BADGES???

We don't need no stinking badges!

    Totally agree

  • First, not agreeing with someone/something isn't the same as being negative.

That said, let's save our forum modifications for really import things, like better search algorithms.

OK, ya got yer cynical curmudgeons, but that's life. And I'll bet the aforementioned besieged developers have sometimes found valid points in those negative rants. Let's face it, sometimes developers DO screw up! And there will always be instances of overpromise/underdeliver that deserve to be pointed out (I think that's called marketing).

What first came to mind when I read the survey was its similarity to a musical forum caste system, so my answer was "no, absolutely not."

Would this be revised each day, in case today I'm a cunt and other days I'm more supportive?

Is that like being gender fluid? :D

  • Could we just purchase an "elite" account that insures people "ignore" us?
Or pay each other to STFU? sort of a negative Patreon... I'll pay you $1/month to
only write once a week. Or create a court system where we can sue each other and
have a "Judge Judy" decision leading to one or both members being put in isolation
for a timeout. Or... a million other ways to make the site a lot more or less interesting.

Meanwhile... tip your developers. "Piano Motifs" @azul3D_Apps has implemented a tip
mechanism in his app and provided regular updates with great new features. It's an
idea many developers should implement since the tip is voluntary and not coercive.

True that if someone can see that someone has made thousands of posts over many years, they probably know what they are talking about, but I think that expertise and other qualities can become apparent reasonably quickly without some visible ranking system. Most people are quite good at getting a feeling for those things I reckon.

    ;P
Who is this @Gavinski guy who came out of nowhere and told us all How to use our apps?!

    Without even asking!

  • Users should have to pay if they don’t post proper music 😂

Yeah - not a great idea. This is a (mostly) friendly place for newcomers and veterans alike without a need for a hierarchy. People on the whole seem pretty conscious of not getting into pissing contests - let's keep it that way. There's enough of that in this world already.

    +1

Otherwise it'll become the new ....Book.

  • I have not witnessed any disrespect towards individual devs, though I have heard second hand about a dev who was offended, and I did once witness a dev who was very offensive to another dev.

But overall this site hosts valuable discourse that is conducted much more politely than many places on the web.

  • By the way, speaking of forum enhancements:

    1. I wish the Activity link weren't such a dead end. It's missing the RHS menu.
    2. I wish I could like a post.

No way. Appreciate the idea, but I'm pretty sure I would go bye-bye if there was rating or membership levels.

You help everyone! You'd be at least a Junior. :p

  • We have the "ignore" function. Now all we need is a "reverse ignore". :D

In addition to being able to flag people who's posts you don't want to see, you could flag people that can't see your posts. There are so many advantages! If there are certain people that you know you provoke, you could proactively save them the grief.

This post started off as a joke. Part of me kinda almost takes it seriously though the more I think about it. :p o:)

Ahh, but many days I would just love the ability to get busted right back to cadet. :D

  • Is this the right place to post a song?? ;-)
