Audiobus Battle Proposal

With permission of @Sebastian and @Michael, I think it'd be fun to try a monthly Audiobus Forum battle. I have drawn up a list of proposed permanent rules, if anyone has any rules they would like to add or amend, please do!

All battles require using Audiobus.

iOS instruments/DAWS/devices only, nothing external (no guitars, controllers, French horns, egg shakers, etc) unless host states otherwise.

$5 US limit on apps that are a must use (no more than one app, doesn't include AB).

Regardless of if they entered a submission, all forum members are allowed one vote.

All entry's must be uploaded to SoundCloud via iOS app.

Host should not cast a vote unless there is a tie.

Host should always be aware of trying to make all inclusive rules.

Participants should always be aware it's just for fun.

Three weeks to enter, one week to vote.

No unauthorized, copy written material allowed.

For the first battle, I think it'd be fun to come up with three rules as a community and let the winner take it from there. My first proposal for rule one is that the song must feature the Figure app bass preset, "Unstable". This can be routed, manipulated, rerouted, sampled into to your app of choice, etc... but used nonetheless.

Second and third proposed rules...? Additional permanent rules...? No harm in trying everyone!

The audio from one of Doug's videos!

    Rule number two?

  • Great idea! Perhaps the submission should be limited to X minutes in length.

Also, does this forum have a polling function?

  • Battle? Rules for making music? No guitar?

  • iOS devices? Self imposed limitation? No guitar?

    Yes to all!

You can propose an external instrument rule if you like. Or we can throw out a permanent no external gear rule? It doesn't matter, the point is trying something new. It's not mandatory.

    Edit: there's also Guitarism too.

  • What would be the judging criteria? Style, production.....?

  • There's just x number of entrants, and you vote on your personal favorite.

  • If you vote, you have to listen to all tracks. There are no prizes so this is all honor system, I really don't think this would get abused as there is nothing to gain.

Very difficult to check out this, specially if there are a lot of candidates, but let's play.

    Questions:

What's to stop people from voting for their buddies? If there are a lot of embedded sound cloud or youtube entries, the page will crash safari. Is video included or is this strictly sound?

Maybe hosting on soundcloud or the likes might work better. Maybe a youtube playlist.

Edit: I noticed the uploaded to soundcloud statement made by op.

There is nothing to stop people from voting for their friends or not listening to all the tracks. There is also no way to know if people actually followed all the rules or even wrote the song they submit. It's all honor system, but without prizes, there really is no incentive to get 10 of your buddies to sign up for the forum just to vote on your track. Once you win a battle, you host the next one and aren't eligible until the following battle. If someone wants to recruit an army of voters every two months just win this arbitrary contest, we can all simply stop battling.

Video sounds fine to me, though I think all entries ending up on a SoundCloud playlist is the best option. Perhaps each entry can be submitted to the host, who is responsible for making a SC playlist? This instead of a bunch of safari crashing posts within a thread?

  • Sounds like fun. You'd better include a no copy written material unless cleared by owner rule.

Not revealing the artist untill after voting makes the work stand on its own...just saying.

  • Good call, added the copyright rule to OP.

Would there be a special soundcloud account you'd post all of the entries to so that the identity of the entrant isn't revealed?

If I am following @CSwinn correctly, the host would not change. Host alone would know the artist if he chooses to implement that.

That host would need a paid soundcloud account and an email address to receive entries, host would then upload to soundcloud. The soundcloud page, once populated, would be post into a thread on this forum with a topic indicating the month, where voting would occur (maybe a poll or the +1 feature).

Votes then tallied, winner announced. Host would then start new thread for the coming month (edited in place with soundcloud page latter) with winners choice of rules announced.

Am I following you correctly @CSwinn?

  • All screen or controller manipulation must be with the tip of your nose...

  • Hehe, sweet =)

And yep, you can create polls with new discussions.

Sorry for my bad English, can someone explain this?

Lol, nice visual.... Don't forget to grease the nose for less friction. Ouch.

I think what he means to say is not requiring (as a rule) any apps that are more than $5 (like Auria). And also not requiring multiple apps. It seems like a way of leveling the playing field to allow more participants.

**To give to CSwinn's post, I purpose that all work must be at least 1 minute long but under 16mb in file size.

  • This sounds like fun! :)

  • Hmm.... Thanks for the explanation, I really not remember the price of those apps I bought.... This sounds like I only can use Garageband as DAW.....

I THINK it's not that you can't use, but rather, are not "required" to use rule.

Once thesoundtestroom gets well, he'll probably mop the floor with us...just saying

  • If required apps are $5 at start of battle, can include (promote/incentivise) sale apps?

  • Glad to see this has a little interest! As far as app prices, the only time it matters is when an app is required for a rule. You could use Auria, Different Drummer, or Cubasis to your hearts content, but if you host a battle, you cannot require more than one app or an app that is usually more than $5 US.

I don't think major sale apps should ever be required as their price could jump over $5 at any time during the battle @Fitz.

I personally feel time limits should be imposed only by the host. If someone makes an awesome 30second/30 minute song everyone likes, they should win. However, making tracks too long is only going to shoot yourself in the foot. No one will want to listen or vote.

Yeah just suggesting, I was going with your idea of community set rules for first go round.

  • Oh, I see. Definitely, then! Is there a way to tell file size without a computer?

And on the first tuesday following the first full moon of the month!

  • As far as soundcloud goes, I think the easiest thing would be having people responsible for uploading their own entries and posting them in a submission thread. I can just foresee problems with sharing the responsibilities of playlist creations and ownership rights etc. Seems like every app has an upload to SC function too, no extra hoops to go through.

I don't know how groups work on SC, can people just submit tracks to one of those?

  • edited April 2014

It appears soundcloud is currently being affected by the heartbleed ssl vulnerability.

It seems there are two way the sc group can be handled, either give every participant the password (number of which will vary from month to month and not tamper proof) or have one maintainer, host if you will.

This is where the good idea starts to unravel. It takes work and dedication.

If all participants upload their own into one thread, safari crash. If one soundcloud post with all entries, I don't know how many options a poll can offer and someone is left footing the work and the soundcloud bill. @Boone51 stated he tried something like this but I think his was a "telephone" scenario.

@Michael gave his thumbs up, maybe if we could eek out a bit of hard drive space on this server, entries could be stored on a temp basis (reset monthly) possibly in the creations section. The cost of space and bandwidth could be offset by revenue generated from AppStore links to the required app. Also if the top three vote getters would give a short description of what apps they used and how they used them along with AppStore links may also generate revenue to offset operational costs. Or possibly developer sponsored. But I do not know their operational costs so this is purely lip service.

Take a look at weeklybeats.com, you choose a liscence for your work upon "submition" (yes that's spelled correctly). I do believe they are Aussie as well. Nothing stopping members here, posting there and voting here.

I now rest my case and wait to see how this turns out.

  • I prefer the 'upload to your own soundcloud account and post here' method primarily because of @CSwinn's point that so many apps make it easy to post there and we orta do whatever we can to keep the barrier to entry low (like the $5 required app limit).

Anonymous would be cool but there's a lot of overhead involved with making it happen.
