Music theory app
Wich music theory app can you recommend? My son wants to prepare to a entrance examination of jazz studies.
Something with hearing training and chord-theory?
Comments
Tonality is a very comprehensive app for this. I also recently downloaded Chord by Roman Sevastyanov and have been enjoying it thoroughly.

This is the only app I know of which would be suitable - as it focuses on Jazz, and goes to a pretty high level of sophistication.
@cian Thanks for that link.. 👍 I was not aware of this app, until now.. looks very thorough..
For jazz, he probably should take a look at Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro, although he may have to work through some tutorials to learn how to use it.
Thanks for the suggestions @3sleeves @cian @GovernorSilver !👍🏽
I think we begin trying Tonality. If he signals, that he is more ambitioned, than Earmaster and/or Chord. MTH seems to be very advanced.
Exiting!
@Satie If you have any questions or suggestions just let me know!
👍🏽
HookTheory for sure!
Also I like Waay - nice theory app with an interesting design.
I don’t think tonality does ear training - and the theory isn’t really jazz theory.
Ear master is the only app I know of that really targets jazz pedogy
@cian There is an ear training section (intervals, melodies, chords, and scales). Definitely not as complete as the other app you mentioned but I can only do so much. Jazz theory exercises and reference material are on my todo list (that's my background after all). I'd love to hear any suggestions you might have.
Though there's no app for this (unless you count the free Impro-Visor for desktop), I was just recommending Conrad Cork's Lego bricks system in the jazz chord symbols thread. It's essentially an attempt to roll together the kind of thinking about chord progressions illustrated by MTH into an ear training and song-memorisation method based around jazz standard 32-bar song form and structures. Here's a chart I did of the basic bricks when I was getting into it:
All the stuff Earmaster Pro does I guess
It's just a thorough tool that covers more than just ear training, but also sight singing, rhythm, playing by ear and some pretty advanced Jazz stuff (if you buy those courses). And the AI engine that drives it is pretty good.
@cian Fair enough. What do you mean by AI engine? I couldn’t find anything like that
Tonally just got an update - before that, there was a hearing intervals training menu, is that gone?
@Satie I didn't remove it. Can you send me a screenshot? It will be on the ear training tab with all the other levels.
(Also just to be sure, you're talking about Tonality, not Tonaly, right?)
Oh - I was confused - yes Tonality - and yes there is the ear training, not in the other program.🙃😊
@Satie All good. This happens way too much
Yes. I feel for you on this one. That was really weird when the competing app changed their name so close to yours.
@gusgranite Thanks. I thought so too, but convinced myself otherwise (after emailing the dev). I'm starting to think I was being naïve.
