Audiomodern Riffer 3 Update - What’s New / Detailed Video Tutorial (winners announced)
Audiomodern Riffer 3 Update - What’s New / Detailed Tutorial (4 FREE iOS copies to give away!)
Riffer 3 is without doubt one of the best - probably THE best - midi sequencer for iOS / desktop of 2020. The iOS version is a universal app so works on iPhone as well as iPad. Although the app has been out for a while, the new version has really significant new features. In this video I will look at what’s new, focusing on the new polyphonic capabilities, the ‘density’ function (‘ratcheting’) and the wonderful midi input options, especially good for live performance. I go through all the features of the app in detail, so if you watch all this you probably won’t need to read the manual. If you are watching in the first 2 days of release of the video you have a chance to win one of four free copies. If you have it already, why not win and give to a friend. Details are in the pinned comment at the top of the YouTube comments section. If watching after that, consider subscribing and hitting the bell so you don’t miss out on future videos - I almost always have free apps to give away (and in fact, a few days after this video drops will be doing a huge app of the year video with app giveaways worth hundreds of dollars).🤞
Don’t forget you can follow me on Twitter at @gavinski_s. My Twitter posts are almost exclusively iOS music-related, and I regularly post short clips using new apps in jams, and sometimes also have free apps to give away to Twitter followers.

Oops - edited to add link - premiere with ppl from Audiomodern in the live chat starts a few hours from now (2.30pm GMT, 3.30pm Berlin time, 9.30am New York time)
This might we’ll be the thing that pushes me into getting this app, I had been thinking about it but the monophonic thing put me off for ages, they changed that recently, and now there’ll be this to lay it all out clearly.
Nice one Gav, looking forward to it!
I’m up where be everyone at? 😂. Looking forward to this video.
if i’m awake i’ll be there! i love this app but haven’t really used it much... working to many hours ugh
You need to get your priorities straight Mister!!!!! Dont you know @Gavinski has been slaving over this video for days!!! Days I tell you!!! 😂
Ok I will shut up now and go get coffee.
hahaha must not sleep! must stay up longer than the video took to make 😂
i really enjoy gavs live premieres! imma do my best!! at the tail end of a65 hour work week tho... need that coffee!
i guess i’ll have to wait for another 47mn 🙃
i could either play bullet on lichess or ... play riffer ! or both 😎
Great, see y'all there.
Chat has started, premiere starts in ten mins or so!
Great video!! Thanks @Gavinski
Thanks! @onerez
The main thing I think is that it was a great chance for ppl to make some killer suggestions for improvements in the live chat which Audiomodern seem willing to act on 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I would be interested in getting a summary of the ideas suggested in the live chat for improvements, and see what actually gets added and doesn't get added. Here are a couple of things I remember, can anyone add to this?
Allow more flexibility over tie notes so that, for example, you could have 3 identical notes side by side and only tie two of them.
Allow (optional) ties between the last and first note of a sequence of they are identical.
Have a channel for CC messages (I'd love to see this - would be great for example to have pitch bend abilities like Step Poly arp does)
Allow velocity ramps for ratchets (again like Step Poly Arp does)
Allow polyphony inside individual piano rolls (what do people think of this idea, is this straying too far from the current concept?)
There were a bunch of other ideas. Feel free to share those you remember or fresh ideas for things that could improve Riffer. I'm really digging it though. I also want to mention one thing I forgot to mention in the video which is 💣 - how easy it is to save your own custom scales, this is a great feature!
Also just to give a shout out to Step Poly Arp. Anyone enjoying Riffer who is not using SPA should definitely check it out, absolutely brilliant arp / sequencer.
@Gavinski .... here is what I suggested and told Audiomodern on Twitter. I really think that there needs to be a switch to set all 4 instances to the same scale. I mean lets say you want to do a song using all 4 instances or play heads... for me if I set the first one to lets say F minor... it would be great if all others could just auto go to that(if there was a toggle). I am a simple man and dont know why I would want to play different instances in different scales......
Thanks again for the video.
@Gavinski I haven’t even explored custom scales in Riffer (yet)..
..1 minute later.. I figured it out.. without looking at the manual or your newest tutorial.. that’s fairly intuitive I’d say.. definitely an added bonus feature.. 👍 thanks for drawing my attention to it..
the live chat was great and having the dev in there really was a bonus! very receptive to suggestions and it seems like they are going to work on making some of them a reality!
But this is super easy, all you have to do is press 'all' button before you set the scale, no? And then turn 'all' off again if you want to make further local, not general adjustments. That 'all' button is your friend!
@royor yes, custom scales sooooo well implemented in this!
@reasOne yeah, Audiomodern were very appreciative of everyone's great ideas 👍🏻
OMFG.............. Jesus. I am going to go bury my head in the sand.
I just noticed that when i play -12 or -24 in riffer, the sound goes on the left side only in my headphones ... like a pan ... anybody else ?
Edit : it came back to normal after i stopped and restarted ... but does it again etc
Also, when you ask a randomization with only a few notes ( 3 or 4 ), it always plays the root note or its octave ) ... is there a way to change that ?
Octaves problem - I have not experienced this
3 or 4 notes thing - probably best u contact @Audiomodern directly, not sure if they check here
+1 this
And yet I wish it was easier to select the notes in the rows.
I’ve been using this and Riffer a lot lately.
just tried on my phone and have the same issue ... it’s not a 100% pan but there is a pan going on ... will write to them anyway
@Audiomodern
@Gavinski in the live stream I mentioned the default setting of 2 for the instances of Density that are generated by a random or infinity trigger. I can change this globally when I set up an AUM session as I don't always want ratchet effects but it always resets to 2 when I open the session again. Would be cool if I could save a default of 0 in the app, or if it saved the setting in the session. Cheers!
Yeah Nige, that is weird, I wonder why it is not saving that. I agree that - as much as I love ratchets - a default of zero might be better. Especially if you get all 4 piano rolls going if they are all ratcheting it can be a bit much.
I think Riffer is great but I have a problem about the presets: It seems like presets would be more useful if you could save them as a group. That way you could create individual “songs” and switch between presets as parts of a song construction and you could have different groups of presets for different songs.
So I thought maybe I could group a set of presets into a folder but I don’t see where the presets are stored. If I try to save a preset I don’t see where it goes. If I choose ‘import presets’ it goes to the file app but there isn’t a folder for Riffer there. What am I not understanding?
I have to say Riffer keeps getting better (fix the sync! - my damn Tourette’s keeps acting up) and better.
@Gavinski 8 don’t know how mush of an in you have with @Audiomodern but as a feature request I’d like to suggest: a sustain channel where you draw your own ties. Having it all legato or staccato is cool but many times frustrating that I can choose which notes are held.
Have asked for that already! Is this sync always an issue for you in all daws? Enkaytee seemed to mention that it only happened in specific circumstances.
I notice if you switch presets they change immediately rather than waiting for the end of the cycle and the timing gets off. Is there a setting to have presets change at the end of the cycle rather than right away?
That would be good, I'll pass that on
They answered already lol:
Yes, this was a big debate since version 1.0, most users request to change on the spot and not of the end of the loop.
There are many reasons to do so. Even more now with 4 riffs. Because what would be the “loop” actually? Which of four riffs will be the “master” as each can have different timing
This makes sense if you think about it actually 👌
