Still worth to pickup a 2nd hand 12,9 iPad Pro 2017 512GB? Advice please.

I'm really in doubt if it's still worth to pick up a 12,9 Pad Pro 2017 512GB or to pick up a 11" iPad Pro 2018 64GB. The 512GB price is $550 while I can purchase the more modern and faster iPad 11" Pro 64GB with USB-C at $500. But of course the 2017 still has the 3.5mm audio jack.
The iPad will be mainly used for music creation (audio apps) and not for things as video editing.

Any advice is welcome.

I have the 256GB 10.5" 2017 iPad Pro and it's holding its own pretty well regarding CPU in complex AUM sets with many plugins, though I've worked out which plugins play nice and don't hog the system. Storage wise, after 3 years it's never been more than a third full, but depends on how you plan to use it. And yes it does have the headphone jack.

Whether 64GB is enough depends on your intended usage, but my impression from forum discussions on this topic are that 64GB is a bit on the small side, once you take off iOS and other apps, it doesn't leave a lot esp once you get into storing samples, or installing apps which have sample banks or wavetables, e.g. samplers and granular synths. I guess you don't want to spend too much time managing disk space.

  • I have a 12,9 Pad Pro 2017 512GB. I will probably keep it for two more years. I have 120GB left, it should be enough. It is still powerful enough to run all existing music apps but of course, CPU will peak when too much simultaneous instruments/ Fx. I don't recommend to have less than 128Gb anyway

In this comparison, I would say the biggest factor is size and mobility. The internal CPU / RAM differences won’t be a huge difference for most types of music-making.

But the 11” compared to the 12.9” will feel like a massive difference (both with screen space, and with mobility). The 12.9 is just fantastic for screen space and everything feels huge for using apps, which is really nice.

But the 11” has the reduced bezels, is a tiny bit thinner, and will feel so much more portable if that’s important to you. If you use a 2018 or newer iPad Pro... it is impossible to go back: honestly those 2017 bezels just seem comically fat and unwieldy, both on the 10.5 and the 12.9 from 2017 or older.

  • For sure, buy the 2017 12.9" Pro. I have 2 of them and they holding up without any problem for heavy duty music tasks. With 512GB you don't have to worry about disk space.

  • I am looking for this exact iPad. So if you found a deal somewhere, PM me! And yes, 2017 2nd gen with the headphone port? Still awesome!

I just saw that you are deciding between 64GB and 512GB?? For making music, you’ll be way happier with more storage. If you really must have the mobility of an 11” device, then save up for the 256GB model.

Personally, nothing stifles creativity like having to waste time on iOS housekeeping and deleting things just to make room for another track.

But, likewise is have a ton of samples you don’t use and is a hassle to go through to find what you like. Less is more, sometimes. Perhaps not with apps. But I have a ton of apps and only the sample based ones take up space. Pure synth, Bassalicious are some, but it can be liberating not having too much choice.

That said, if I could afford it, gimme a 5tb iPad lol

  • I have a 2nd Gen Ipad Pro 12.9 512GB and the only issues I have ever encountered is with Cubasis 3. Loading AU insert effects causes the DSP to overload randomly but I think this is more of an issue with Cubasis than the IPad Pro. I'm still running IOS 13.5 and it works flawlessly apart from said issue.

The other thing to remember is IOS updates can be on the large size and only having 64GB will get eaten up pretty quickly.

  • Hi,
Doesn't iOS 13+ allow you to use external storage ? Couldn't that make up for the 64 gig limitation?

  • I have the exact 12.9 Pro2 and love it. Especially the larger size. If you want something smaller @FlowingRobes is correct, you can have external storage... and no headphone jack 🤔😉

  • If I had that choice I'd definitely go with the 12.9 :)

Thanks for all the comments. Reading the comments it is clear I should go for the 12.9. The size is no problem for me. Hardly use Cubasis and still own the 2.0 version, that probably will work fine. If there's anyone who has good reasons why I should go for the 2018 model I still would like to hear it. As for example compatibilty problems of some apps with the older 2017 model.

  • $550 is a great price for the 12.9

I have that 2017 model except with 256gb. Still works fine with all the apps. It has a tiny hairline crack in the screen from when I left it on the floor overnight when the temperature dropped below freezing. Protip: Don’t do that.

  • Apparently I’m gonna be the only one telling you to go with the 11”
There a massive performance difference between an a10 and an a13/14.
You don’t even need a pro considering there’s basically 0 apps that use multicore for audio.

    Get both?😳😉

Basically 0 being a synonym for Cubasis 3?

  • I have a 64GB 2018 iPad Pro 11” that I’ve had for about a year. Processor wise, it’s been great! No issues unless I really start overloading a project with a bunch of effects and plugins.

The storage thing has become an issue as of late however, having to delete things to make space every time I want to download something. It’s manageable yes, but it would be a lot nicer to have extra space where you didn’t have to worry about it.

I guess I can’t complain though, as I got a really good deal on this 64GB model ($350)

  • iPad Pro 10.5 with 4gb RAM is still the one to go for if you’re strapped for cash.
I bought Pro 11 2018 and didn’t find a lot of difference in performance. 11 has a faster processor but the same ram. I managed to smash 11’s screen so I sold it and bought 11 2020. Now I can see the difference in performance but the pleasure costed me £600 second hand.

    To sum up:

If you want to save money go for Pro 10.5
    Otherwise Pro 11 2020.

The lack of a 3.5mm jack input is a bummer but the dongle is only £10 from Apple.

  • I’m debating air 3 vs 10.5 Pro quite a lot at the moment, both have headphone port and support my pencil v1. Air is faster but Pro has more ram is the biggest factor that’s causing me to think, plus the pro you can get much larger disk space...

  • The other thing to bear in mind is 64GB isn't much these days and yes as of IOS13 you can use external storage but if you like to keep your IPads up to to date with the latest O.S then you may start noticing it slowing down due to how much space the updates take up.

I'm on 13.5 and I have automatic updates turned off. For some reason my Ipad has downloaded the latest 14,3 update which is over 2.25GB! But I won't update until I know it's safe to do so. I might be wrong but with IOS 14 you don't have a choice to have auto updates turned off and your Ipad will update automatically. Another reason to get the 2nd Gen Ipad Pro 12.9 512GB

I’ve got an iPad Air 3 here with 256gb.
It compliments my 9.7 iPad Pro rather nicely.

I have both running side by side.
As I’ve had the iPad Pro much longer most of the projects are on there.
I use the pro as a sound source or standalone
for dRambo, BM3 and drum computer.
I live mix using the iPad Air 3.

I might be wrong but with IOS 14 you don't have a choice to have auto updates turned off and your Ipad will update automatically.

You can still turn off automatic updates in iOS14.

Ah cool. Thanks for clearing that up! :)
