  • What is the purpose of the TTS feature, is it purely for assistance or have I missed something here?

It's a way to produce fixed, generative, or randomly-selected spoken text, with or without music. It's not an essential feature, but can be used to recite composed or cut-up poetry and koans, meditation prompts, Mad Libs, dialogues, gibberish Babel noises, and who knows what else. One very obvious, and surprisingly effective, use is to announce the auto-generated titles of successive pieces produced by Flows (or by scripted changes in a Mix that turn a single piece into a generative mixtape). But if you don't have a use for it you can just turn it off and use the music engine on its own, which is what we were all doing anyway up until yesterday morning.

I'd still like to see some syntactic features in the text engine, though. It's a bit of a limitation that it only works with either single words or whole-line sentences, and they've closed the loophole in the previous version that let you use non-breaking spaces to turn phrases into words (because the speech engine needs to be able to recognise word breaks correctly; you can still use other Unicode characters that display as whitespace, but the spoken version comes out awful). It seems a missed opportunity that a generative speech app doesn't do generative grammar…

  • Also, another forum member who shall remain nameless has been frittering away the evening collaborating on a Wotja insult generator using the random voices to produce abusive dialogue in a variety of accents, including the one that sounds exactly like Matt Berry. Sample transcripts:

You knob face – you must have been bitten by a radioactive clown pigeon.
Yeah well you look like a jizz got fucked by a kidney you twat bum.

You look like a burger took a shit on a face you great monkey jockey.
Well fuck you donkey breath – your face looks like a piss got in an accident with a bagel.

I'm not altogether sure this is what I got into generative music to do, but 2021 is already looking up.

    😆 😂

  • It took a me a while to dig deep into this app and truly appreciate it for what it is... it’s a must have imo. But it has a learning curve and is very detailed. Nothing wrong with that, maybe just not for every one.

Takes its place alongside Wotja classics like “Up the Spoonful Hound.”

The code sounds super useful for all kinds of other things though. Will you tell us how it works?

There's not much to it: under this tab you make a list of skeleton sentences to select from, and choose which words (unbolded in black; I've just used "noun" throughout here for clarity) you want to be randomly replaced…

… and then you have a separate list under this tab of the words that can be used to replace them:

There are also some settings to get each line of the pair to be read out in different voices. I think there's currently a bug in the option that should choose a random skeleton from the list (but instead seems to lock the present skeleton so none of the words are replaced); duly reported.

  • Hi guys, is there any reason I should buy Wotja 21 Pro given I have the regular Wotja on my iPad?

It might be interesting to have it on my MacBook Pro as well as my iPad, but for $27.99 Canadian I'm not sure just being able to do the same thing on my laptop is worth the cost, unless there is some improvements to Wotja that would justify paying $27.99?

Ah, a mad libs thing. Looks fun.

No, if you have the regular version you should find that as of 1 January you already own the Mac version with the same feature set as the "Pro" version (though some of them are only unlocked by the sub in that version). Have a look in the App Store on the MacBook; if it's not already there in your purchases, download it and check the shopping-bag icon at upper right, then the arrowed circle to restore purchases if your sub isn't automatically showing.

Unmasking myself to ask: What's Up the Spoonful Hound?

  • It's one of yours, you great bin licker!

  • All right, wizard bum. Clearly I've blanked out that traumatic memory. I don't think any of the dolls have said that?

I remember it popping up in the random cut up generator ... was it one of yours @Masanga?

Yes, it was a mashup that came out of feeding Wotja on the melodies and titles of Sankyo music box tunes from @cooksferryqueen's collection of creepy dolls. I remember it also came up with "Mademoiselle Irish Jesus" and my favourite "Beer O". You then wrote lyrics to "Up the Spoonful Hound" that could be sung to the tune of "Barbie Girl" and that was probably what caused 2020.

:D I thought after dozens of hours of therapy I'd managed to blot that out. I've just set myself back 6 months of personal development by dragging that up from the murky depths ...

I was definitely not aware of this!
