Please recommend me a screen recorder (with audio) for mac

Shocked and stunned to find that built in Mac screen record cannot capture internal audio the way ipad screen record does. Can anyone recommend a good free one? Or maybe even a paid one if there is any advantage in it?

  • I use "Screenium", does all i need. But it's 30€ (on sale right now)

  • You can use the built in recorder along with an audio redirect like soundflower (still should work with the latest macs) or blackhole - definitely works as I use it.
    More info here: https://github.com/ExistentialAudio/BlackHole

  • I was looking into sound flower, I used to use it years ago but I saw tons of people complaining about it recently, terrible reviews! I'll tey Blackhole maybe, thanks
    Nige. @enkaytee @PartOfPayn 30 euros 😂 😂 wow.....

  • Managed to successfully record this with audio, but when I AirDrop it to my iPad it won’t go into the photos app. Does photos on ipad have a problem with QuickTime vids?

Maybe transcode to an mp4 first.

  • Screenflow, I love it, use it for all my music videos.

    +1

  • iOS is quite easy to 'cheat' just rename the file to *.m4v or *.mp4 before Airdrop.

  • ScreenFlow? It's 150€?!? (in the Mac app store)

  • Holy Moly. Does it do backrubs too?

Back rubs? I’d expect it to do front rubs for that price!

Now that was priceless! Someone give this man a well-deserved front rub.

  • Why don’t you record the audio in your DAW of choice and put it together later?

@Gavinski : fwiw despite not being the most technical person in the world, I had no problem setting up the free Blackhole Audio driver in Ableton to let me use Giorgio Sancristoforo’s brilliant but VST-less standalaone softwares e.g. the Substantia physical modeller, he provides clear step by step instructions. It just appears as another set of inputs and outputs available in your Preferences and works just fine alongside the ins and outs from your existing audio interface.

Incidentally, all 7 of Giorgio’s excellent left field experimental sonic softs are available in a bundle for 49 Euro til 6th Jan - definitely a bargain for Mac and Windows experimentalists and Hainbach fans out there:

That is a bargain, thanks @Svetlovska yes, don't worry i got this to work with Black Hole as mentioned above.

@despego because that involves more work, it is easier to just record the video and audio synced together.

  • A slightly broader but related question:

I want to make a video where I am doing screen recording of both my ipad and desktop screen, the ipad screen recording will also have audio, the Mac screen won't have audio, just need to capture video. I might be using Studiomux to send the audio from the mac to ipad, or may be using my audio interface. It may take several separate takes and then these will be edited into a video. I want the screen recording on the mac and ipad to be synced so that when I press record or stop on the ipad screen recorder, the screen recording on the mac will automatically start and stop in sync. And then that it will be easy to combine these into a simple video with minimal video editing.

Is there a cross platform screen recording app that will allow me to do all the above easily? If not what would be the easiest way. I really don't want to waste much time on video editing, it's not something I enjoy. Cheers!

@Gavinski : I think if I was looking to do as many vids as you do, as a pro or semi pro, I’d be thinking of putting something like this on my tax return as an allowable business expense this year:

With one of these for the iPad:

One option could be to mirror the ipad screen to the mac via airplay and a server - there are a couple of good ones - airserver (https://www.airserver.com/Mac) or reflector (https://www.airsquirrels.com/reflector/features/mac-and-windows) - they both have recording built in but may not be quite what you're looking for - at least you can get trial versions.

Gotcha! I’ve seen a few videos done like that. I thought you would edit anyways but yes, best with a smooth workflow.

Yeah, some youtubers clearly enjoy the process of making and editing videos in and of itself, I have little interest in that aspect, for better or for worse.

  • @Gavinski : this loopback audio might help capturing the computer audio in your screen recording sessions:
    https://rogueamoeba.com/loopback/

  • For what it's worth, one option for the (now solved) original question is Capto, which isn't free but is part of the SetApp suite, so if you already subscribe to that you have it available in the package (which in any case has a seven-day free trial period).

  • Loopback works great.
QuickTime using Sound Flower also works well.

(Not tested) Zoom should work well. Start a meeting, begin recording then share your desktop with computer audio. Anything on screen should be recorded. Once you end the meeting an mp4 with audio is generated.

  • That sounds like a promising idea @gothamoddisee. Another thing I have been wondering is whether something like duet display might play a role in solving this problem. I could maybe route my desktop audio via interface to an aum channel, do my mic and other ipad stuff on other ipad channels, then use duet display on my ipad to switch between viewing desktop screen and ipad screen in real time while doing ipad screen recording. Does anyone familiar with duet display know whether this is remotely feasible? I haven't actually used the app yet myself.

Just tried it in Duet and it does seem to work: screen recording on the iPad will capture whatever's in the iPad screen in Duet, and will continue to record when you switch to a different app. But if you switch back to Duet from the other app Duet will briefly recalibrate and display its "Adjusting Resolution" screen for a second or so. I haven't tried your cunning audio hack.
