  • Another good sale. WOW Filterbox also the same price.

I have an iPad2. I heard some people used WOW as an effects pedal for their guitar apps in AB. Which one would you own between WOW and Effectrix if you only had one?

  • Turnado 50% off at $9.99.

  • I don't have either...yet. But I do have Turnado, which I love for guitar mangling. However, it seems that Turnado and WOW have a bit of an overlap, whereas Effectrix is unique. So I'll probably buy Effectrix and hold off on WOW for now.

  • Strange, not in Auria.

  • Arg. Everyone wants my money. Dang.

I have WOW, and it's one of my go-to tools. Awesome Awesome filter box, and it's nothing like any of the others.

  • Hmm... How would WOW fit in to a primarily guitar oriented recording scheme? I'll have to go watch some youtube vids and see if maybe I need to give it another look

Clicking the buy links in Auria takes you to the appstore i believe (the stand-alone versions unlocks the Auria native versions, so you don´t have to buy it all twice).

This is why I was skeptical - I don't know exactly. I'll go try and find the thread and link it. You could certainly do after effects processing like reverb, etc. But as you know from guitars, distortion/overdrive effects need to come in either before the preamp, or perhaps in an effects loop, but always before modulation effects. Put a distortion AFTER a reverb effect and you'd get a damned mess!

WOW Filterbox still looks cool to me because I could imagine taking vanilla synth parts and breaking them up with "dirt" effects or some filter passes.

Turnado, however, is probably the most balanced offering in terms of covering a full suite of effects, and would probably be more useful with synths.

Effectrix is an inventive product, but doesn't interest me because it's kind of applies effects like a step sequencer. Or something.

I'll probably be reading reviews and watching some vids on WOW versus Turnado, but this could very well be a $9.99 donation to SugarBytes if it turns out these things slow down my iPad 2 to unusable levels. With some of the more feature-heavy effects/synth/DAW apps, I worry that it'd be like the new video game with state-of-the-art graphics that runs terrible once you get it home on your outdated computer.

  • Thanks, @ChrisG. I didn't know that. It is true. Whence finished the purchase, I can use Turnado standalone and insert effect in Auria. Super.

  • Now I know how shitty it feels to buy an app a day before an update. I used to feel immune to that and have a good laugh whenever anyone complained about it. Ouch...:(

Turnado truly is a monster. Test in Auria insert effect, it is not very stable, and kind CPU hog. Using all 8 units could increase CPU up to 34% (iPad Air). Fortunately it is not EQ, you don't have to use it on every track.

  • The 1000000$ question is: I have Turnado and Effectrix and I'm fairly skint, shall I splash out on wow?

  • ...or shall I get sector instead?

  • ...or glitch breaks? Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

  • I am familiar with Turnado because I have it on the desktop, but never have tried Effectrix. What are the differences? Is it essentially the same effects but different UI and workflow?

  • Effectrix needs a midi clock from another app if used in AB fx slot. It is more tempo bound as you draw the length of time each effect is engaged. So you could have a reverb only for 1/32nd of the bar etc. because of this the results are often tighter with the beat. I prefer turnado as it is more hands on but they're just different beasts. I regretted buying it for the first few days but then got to know it better ;)

Ugh, this is tough for me. The apps are on sale, so I'd be okay with picking one of them. But after watching some videos, I guess I different impression of what "effects" mean coming from guitar playing. Turnado is cool piece of software, but dubstep music and designing the soundtrack for the next Michael Bay movie, I'm not sure that's really my musical inclination. My goal was more to work with the tone of the notes themselves beyond the capabilities of the native apps (much like what a guitar pedal does to a clean signal). The SugarBytes stuff seems more about DJ improvisation and modification of entire projects to add stutters, filter effects, etc.

WOW Filterbox looks more narrowly focused, but I could see maybe using that to more basically alter the tone of drum beats and synth lines, which seems a more likely use for me than glitching.

Tough choices! The same money I spend on this could as easily be spent on a 7th or 8th synth app I don't need!

  • I know what you mean Storm. Still, I have found Turnado to be quite fun for unitary as a live filter effect. There are massively cool and customizable delays that no guitar pedal I've seen can touch. Some of the other modulation effects are brilliant too, and the interface encourages creative experimenting to see how far you can deconstruct your guitar tone. You can stack and chain effects in myriad ways...

For an example... I used Turnado heavily in the following track. I know the mix isn't the best, but listen on headphones and pay attention to the guitar. Almost all of it was fed from an amp sim (JamUp or Ampkit depending) through Turnado and back into Cubasis. I made a couple presets with lots of delay and reverb modulation and some other stuff. Not like it's the most brilliant example in the world, but maybe it will give you some ideas of how the app can be used.

  • Does Effectrix have the same depth of control and amount of parameters per effect as Turnado does? I only see a few parameters per effect in the Effectrix demo vids I've seen.

  • Turnado has definitely more fx control such as several lfo's and interesting routing options but effectrix is matrix based so you get a lot of cool tricks from that. There's also a velocity strip and you have a very cool midi mapping where you can set up 'presets' and assign them to different keys on a keyboard, you may have seen it on youtube. Anyhow, the more I write about it the more I realize what a bang for a buck it is.

  • @firejan82. Yup, bought it hours before the sale. Seems to happen consistently with every expensive app I purchase. Rather than see this as a curse, I can offer a service to this community. If there's any pricey app you want, tell me about it. I'll buy it and.. Viola, sale!

  • @Schrodinger snickers ... I'd really love TC-11 to go on sale, so... ;)

@supadom Couple questions. In Effectrix are the effects simply on/off? I don't see any kind of fades involved, which seems limiting. And on Turnado, is the Dictator MIDI assignable in the iOS version?

All effects in Effectrix have an Attack and Release parameter (and dry/wet mix). And any parameter in a effect can be automated. It's basically a 1-32 step effect-sequencer.

Yep the dictator can be controlled via midi

  • Ah, awesome. Thanks @ChrisG... I should probably just grab em both and shut up already.

  • Alright, caved and bought both Effectrix and Turnado. Frequenting this forum is costing me boatloads of coin.

Not sure I understand why Effectrix is the more expensive app, seeing as it's a bit more limited in scope of effects and depth. Time to dig in and see what's up.

  • @omnilimbo, at least you got it on sale :) I love Effectrix and Turnado but they serve very different purposes. Effectrix is great way to mangle a drum pattern. In theory, if you have a lot of time and a decent midi sequencer, you could achieve the same result with Turnado but Effectrix makes pattern based effecting so easy and intuitive

  • I think your preference in FX software is determined by how you use it. For example, if you're lining a live guitar into your iPad for effects, you may have a different interest then if you are using a synthesizer. For me, I am creating abstract sounds, using combinations of sequencers, synthesizers, and effects. So, at the end of the day, different "boxes" provide me different palettes and tools.

  • After checking out the videos on all four I'm leaning in a different direction than I was before the videos. I really like how doug showed off turnado's live manipulation process. Seems like it lets u flow with the creativity more so than effectrix.

And I was thinking I wanted wow filter but after watching more videos I'm not sold that it's for me even though it's very popular. I'm leaning towards turnado and thesys.

  • I'm publicly admitting that I caved in and bought Turnado even though I still lack any clear idea how I may use it. It seemed the most versatile option overall.

  • I was really expecting you to jump on WOW, Storm. One day you likely will.. I think it would suit you well. But Turnado is a hefty load of effects power... Just have to wrangle into what you want it to do for your purposes.
