For me, It has to be Koala sampler. I make ambient music using it to set off unsynchronized loops. If I want to add synths or something I usually to it in AUM now. Aum is really good too! But if I could only have one app at all, I'd have Koala.

here's my album I made with just Koala, Alteza, k7d and Tap delay.

Really enjoying this. Am I right in thinking that the more destroyed elements of the sound are from being resampled via Koala's FX, or is the tape delay doing some of that heavy lifting?

    Cheers!

Thank you for taking the time to listen! So, some of the warble is from koala samplers “vibroflange” setting, then there’s a little bit of overdrive and feedback from k7d but yeah the effect is mostly tap delay, with the settings set to “bits of cassette tape found on the side of the road” ( I made that up) tap delay is my favorite tape emulation app, it has a very saturated sound and a realistic (to my ears) wobble!!

    Thanks again for listening!

    Thanks!

I've not actually finished listening. First gave a quick scan, but then listened to tracks 7, 1 & 2, in full. The track I was referring to was 'Carlssin', especially as it gets past the 8-minute-mark. Gets really 'messy' (In the best ways, of course), but still remains pretty clear, distinct and very listenable.

I guess you're referring to VirSyn's 'Tape Delay'? I had my heart set on a combination of Tape Pro, Bit-Juggler, OtherDesertCities and rymdigare for this kind of destruction. I wonder if Tap Delay would add something to that list. Certainly sounds like it might, even just for the “bits of cassette tape found on the side of the road” preset ;) (I hope you saved that as one of the preset names ;)

Will listen to the rest of the tracks over the weekend.

    Thanks, again :)

Ahhh! That's upping the saturation level manually on (yep Virsyn's) Tap delay. You can definitely do something similar Tape pro has a saturation control! Otherwise you could grab Chowtape for free which can really mangle a sound.

    Thanks!

I use Chow on MacOS, and have also been messing around with the iPad version. Really great plugin, f'sure...especially the degradation section :)

What I find attractive about Tape Pro is that it has different impulses for different types of tape, but more importantly (for me) is the different types of noise it has. What I didn't realise until just now was that it had 6 different types of saturation, which ticks another box.

It's a shame we can't demo these apps, otherwise I'd definitely check all options :)

I'm not sure about that statement when it comes to Wotja. From its earliest days of development when Brian Eno first used it, its prime use case was generative music with slow modulating patterns.

I certainly wouldn't attempt to use Wotja to produce a drum and bass track!

ok, wotja is weird kind of beast - i would not call it "daw" or "groovebox" ar "live jamming app" - i was talking more like about general DAWs, grooveboxes (like GR16, Drambo, Korg Electribe/Wave and so on) and general live jamming apps like AUM or ApeMatrix.
