MIDI guitar ?

Hey,

Messing around with midi guitar app. Has anyone upgraded to the $99 version and been pleased with the results?

It's not AB compatible so I run it in the background. Are there any other midi apps that are recommended that I can use my guitar as the master and slave the keys / synth sounds somewhat seamlessly?

Thanks,

Mike

  • I have the full version of Guitar MIDI. Works better than MIDImorphosis in my experience.

  • Been using the full version for over a year now, it completely changed my views on audio to midi processing in real-time. Absolutely amazing sounding, well worth it, easily the best guitar to MIDI convertor out.

Great review in this months sound on sound magazine too.

  • I have the full version, which is really good, but I don't remember it being $99 - think it was more like $19.99?

  • One caveat with MIDI Guitar is that it doesn't support pitch bend. Lots of people appear not to care, but if you like playing leads with some expression (bends or vibrato), you'll want to pick a different app.

  • And MIDImorphosis just went on sale today. For $3.99 I might as well add it to my arsenal of tools.

  • $19.99 to upgrade.

  • The upgrade on the Mac is real pricey... Instead i just use my irig midi with midi guitar app to control massive, absynth, cyclop, diva, zebra and every other piece of software

  • Thanks. I can work fairly seamlessly with garage band. It's easy to go back and forth between the guitar and the keys. Is there a way to combine the sounds? I'd like to have a guitar sound with a synth layered behind it for texture

Using the other synth apps is not as seamless as GB. Even using audiobus. I'd like to use jamup pro xt and add some synth pads as texture to a solo amp / effect patch. Can this be done and how do I do it?

Ideally I can create a guitar amp patch, add a synth flavor behind it and play along with an imported backing track using jamups jam feature.

    All help is appreciated.

    Mike

  • I seem to recall a lot of latency using MIDI guitar with my 6-string bass. Also, low notes were useless, and even the standard range was dodgy. But the latency was pretty bad. I'll have to give it another go. It was also the free version, but I imagine that shouldn't matter.

  • I try all 3 midimorph, thumbjam, and Midi Guitar.
The best result was midi guitar, but still too much latency for my guitarman, i want to use his incoming signals to other synths, if he play like he want all 3 grabs sometimes too much sometimes not the correct notes, esp. In the lower bass parts...but if he plays for the MidiConv (slow/not to much notes) MidiGuitar works best.
Dont buy the full version cause 20bugs is a bit to much for this compromise...

These apps need a certain number of waveform cycles to analyse the frequency. The lower the note, the longer it takes to reach that number of cycles. You're better off using higher pitched input, such as upper octaves on a guitar, and adjusting the octave range downward on your synth, or else transposing the MIDI data using MIDIBridge.

  • Ive Been following the midi guitar development through the years alongside bass synth fx etc. I've owned/tested a few and the results are always a near miss. At the moment I'm using ampkit octaver to get a bass like effect and it just about works. However....

...since these adventures always end in disappointment I decided that if I'm in need of a synth sound I should use a synth etc. the fun factor is definitely there and I guess accomplished solo guitarists would benefit from a quick fix of a midi guitar rather than learning scales on a keyboard. This however taxes the midi synth concept even more because the faster player you are the more you're going to feel the shortcomings of software tracking. Oh well, guess we all like fun and what's better to have fun than toys?

  • Personally I think there is definitely a place for it, although it's not a replacement for playing keyboards, it's simply an alternative. With the guitar you can achieve phrasing that is very different to a keyboard, and in some instance it's simply more suitable, and it allows you to achieve different effects.

For example playing a sampled saxophone with a guitar just feels (and sounds) a whole lot better than playing the same samples with a keyboard, because you can achieve more "sax-like" phrasing by sliding the notes.

Of course you can also do this with Geo Synth (which is an awesome MIDI controller), but that does lack the physical feel of playing the guitar.

I'm curious how the Jamstik will stack up, it's cheaper than something like the Fishman Triple Play, and the biggest drawback with the add-on modules (like the Fishman) is that you either have to buy a cheap guitar for them, or stick them on a nice instrument.

  • I am curious if anyone here has tried the Jamstik.

  • Jamstik seems to be taking a long time...

  • I thought it was already available??

  • It's suppose to be coming out in May but they've been very quiet lately...

  • Just happened on the Jam Origin site today after playing around with the free version of MidiGuitar (and enjoying it) and noted a new version is coming soon--maybe MidiGuitar2? Not many details but the photo looks interesting.

Looks great, it's already best-in-class on iOS IMO.

  • I got a Rock Band Fender Mustang controller that is supposed to double as a midi guitar. Only one quick play with it in Gadget but it was pretty rough. Lots of false triggers on open strings. Maybe could be tamed with some Midiflow filters...

  • Besides the Jamstik, has anyone tried the YouRockGuitar? http://www.yourockguitar.com

Or interest in the upcoming Artiphon? http://artiphon.com

  • You rock guitar whilst looking like a toy is AMAZING for tapping. Not so great for picking/plucking but ace for finger tapping . SO ace its semi close to z-tar which is better but costs like 3 grand.

  • And is midi guitar app full really 99$? Thats a bit insane. 20 bucks hell yeah tho

  • Fishman TriplePlay is still the way to go if you can afford it. Tracks extremely well, low latency, and works wonderfully with IOS synths. Been using it for the past 2 years at live gigs and it hasn't let me down. The only midi guitar system I've used that didn't make me change my playing style.

  • Rockband 3 guitar for PS3 using the midi output works for me

Do you use anything to filter and clean up the incoming midi? I have one and haven't spent much time using it but I think I need to setup some filters in Midiflow to prevent unwanted notes from triggering, and for many apps remap the six channels for six strings down to one.

I have had a Roland GI-10 and GK2 pickup fitted to my left-handed Hohner G3T since the late ’90s up until about last year, when I tried MIDI Guitar on the Mac (the GarageBand version) and realised that it’s only about as bad as the Roland hardware unit is, except that I could now do without the hardware. So, I took all the pickup nonsense off. I still haven’t soldered the guitar’s volume pot back (I had taken it off because the pickup control unit went there), but I doubt I’d go back to the hardware converter now. I’ve got the paid-for MIDI Guitar app on the Mac and also on the iPad (no discount for both).

+1 for this. The Fishman is really really nice. I wrote MIDImorphosis because I wanted to have a synth guitar, but couldn't justify spending more than $1k on a Roland system. If the Fishman had been available (a steal at $400), I don't know that I would have been motivated to do the coding.

I think you may have the proper Fender ? i have the plastic one, it works best if you change the midi mode, do not use synth mode (which triggers notes when you press the fret buttons instead of waiting for you to hit the strings). Can't remember the key combo to change mode, just google RB3 Guitar manual and you'll find it.
