What does Blackhole Reverb give me...
... that Virsyn AudioReverb doesn’t?
There’s clearly gargantuan love for Eventide’s app here on ABF so I’m certainly curious - especially as it’s on offer just now (thanks @NimboStratus )
Gotta say, I find AudioReverb a fantastic high quality reverb that has always met my needs. Please advise!

Everyone has an opinion. The best is to grab the app, test it, and make your own mind
You don't have to keep it at the end.
I am a huge reverb nut. I might also have two Lexicon outboard reverbs ;-). But also wanted an iOS reverb and the Eventide Black Hole is big and lush how I like it (but have no expectations of it coming anywhere near the Lexi's!) ;-)
BlackHole aims to create huge spaces that defy reality. Sounds are reversed and mixed over each other and linger for days. It's more of an Effect Pedal that a basic clean reverb. But with the right settings it can service that need too.
But I'm with you on the quality of AudioReverb. For natural sounds it's really great.
I've not used either of those two, but now that AUv3FX:Space exists, I can't imagine any task not covered by that or Alteza.
Then again, maybe I'm missing out on a whole lot of fun that I don't even know about!
@israelite this is true
@OscarSouth yeah I had heard Space went AUv3 - never used it but there was always love for it, long before AUv3 landed on iOS. Keen to hear how others feel auv3fx:Space compares to the likes of blackhole and audioreverb.
Thanks @McD this exactly the kind of insight I’m after - sounds like it does freezeverb, reverse whooshes(?) and a bunch of indescribable stuff
@NimboStratus you may have saved me some dosh!
@zeroG by not buying or by buying? ;-)
Doesn’t matter, you’ve saved me money either way!
Suspect I will probably get it
I have both. I agree that AudioReverb is good, but for massive spaces Blackhole sounds more natural to my ears. This fall I made about 25 podcasts with sound effects and musical accents, and Blackhole saved me much-needed time, because the default settings sounds really good.
Every synth sound that comes thru my speakers starts by passing thru blackhole.
From there i decide if the reverb changes.
It has become my standard and initial test for reverb.
If you could throw colors thru reverb effects, i image the colors would be absolutely beautiful after they pass thru this blackhole
Listen to the many demos people have posted..there are tons...if they don't speak to you, there's no reason to get it.
To answer the OP question: Everything. Lushness, depth, it's more than a reverb, it's an experience.
Surprised nobody mentions FAC Alteza. I personally find the Eventide UI ugly and uninspiring. Alteza gives me all the cavernous reverb I will ever need, and the presets are terrific. Plus it has multi-out.
The Virsyn reverb is actually very good, and with a maximum reverb time of 100 seconds it can already do some Blackhole type sounds.
However Blackhole and Alteza have their own character so they’re both worth having if you want that kind of huge space for your mixes.
Blackhole is the most overused tool in my kit. ;^)
As far as I know, this isn’t true in most regions outside of the EU.
I don’t own the Virsyn so can’t offer a comparison. Blackhole makes “huge” and slightly warped reverbs dead easy. The ribbon is brilliant if you take a minute to set it up. Easy to, say, modulate between two different settings or easily toggle between reverbs for song sections like verse and chorus.
You will probably never turn to it for a room or even a shorter hall type reverb. Might be possible (I’m really not sure) but it’s decidedly not built for that. It’s a wonderful thing.
Does a strat give you more than a Tele?
On the general subject of Reverb with something extra I recommend @j_liljedahl's:
They are beautifully crafted FX in categories where many probably consider they have enough but they will replace a lot of apps by competing on quality and offering extra ideas.
I was wondering about this on the 2021 iOS app sales thread. I have FAC Alteza Chorus and Phazer amazing plugs ! I also have Virsyn Reverb and Impulsation for IRs. Can't imagine I would gain much more from Blackhole I am thinking maybe Toneboosters to round out my reverbs. Now if they port over the SP2016 well ....
It will mess up your audio. Like most reverb. Just joking.
Never in a million years. Plus they’re so ugly.
Sir, I demand fisticuffs.
I can always count on an AB forumite to give me a much-needed chuckle. Well played, sir.
Bring it. Bring your Strat, too, we’ll just jam instead. You can borrow some effects to hide that inferior tone.
Telecasters rule all
:big heart emoji:
I’m about to add a Tele to my collection. I’m just trying to decide between the Texas Tea and the Arctic Pearl finish... (well, and waiting on stock, too.)
Real Teles are yellow
Right on. Are you talkin the Ultra version Arctic Pearl with the white pickguard? That thing looks so cherry, especially with that contoured body. I decided over Christmas between that and the Parallel Universe Tele Magico, and went with the latter. One of the best-looking guitars I’ve ever seen. As someone who’s lived on cheap guitars his whole life, turned out to be well worth the money. Total dream.
And if you are talkin buying new, yeah their shipments were all messed up over the holidays with all kinds of delays.
I’m a white/cream on white pickguard fan. Every time I play a yellow one I just end up playing Springsteen songs and daydreaming I’m in a packed arena. Not healthy.
