Swam Brass Trumpets Bundle Video Walkthrough 1 of 3
Swam Brass Trumpets Bundle Youtube Premiere Feb 8th 2.30pm GMT (Win 2 COPIES of any Swam Brass iOS app)
This premiere will air at 2.30 pm London time / 3.30pm Italy time on Monday Feb 8th. Lele (Emanuele), one of the main developers from Audio Modeling, will join us in the live chat on YouTube to answer people’s questions!
I have been very eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Swam Brass collection for iPad on iOS and they do not disappoint!! In this first walkthrough review video in the series, I focus on a general intro to what the Swam sounds are and why they are a big deal, and demo the 5 apps in the trumpets bundle: Bb trumpet, C trumpet, Bb flugelhorn, Eb flugelhorn and a piccolo trumpet. I am looking at the iOS versions but this is also largely relevant to the desktop versions. I also let you hear how cool these can sound when processed through FX apps. These are not just for jazz heads or the classical crowd etc - there is plenty to love here for people who like ambient, experimental, or any genre of electronic music, I would argue, and I make a point of demoing what these can sound like heavily FX-processed.
In this tutorial I use a Roli Seaboard controller to show off the excellent mpe implementation here and discuss the benefits of physical modeling vs sampled instruments. I also look at what your best options will be if you do not have a dedicated MPE controller. I do have one or two small criticisms to make about this release but overall I am a very impressed. The next video will cover the other bundles and other aspects of the app, control from Geoshred etc etc so stay tuned for Pt 2. That video will also have more free copies of Swam apps available to win.
Please remember guys to help out the channel by not watching these behind an ad blocker, as I am sure you do not want to exploit your dear old Gavinski any more than YouTube is already exploiting him 😉. Thank you for your support.

Sweet
I just realised by the way that I mistakenly set the time for the premiere as 9th Feb when it should have been 8th. This has been fixed now.
During COVID time it’s hard to keep track
Indeed, but in this case it was because it had just passed midnight when I set the premiere time and I didn't notice I was already in 8th Feb time lol
So what's the verdict folks? Did this get anyone off the fence?
Will have vids on the rest of the collection coming out over the next few days or week
Thank you for the video. That was nice and very informative. It also showed me that I really would want the advanced features since I personally would need/want some of them to get a more natural round robin sound and some other things. But anyway these tools are great as they are of course.
@Gavinski , very informative. Thanks. Already off the fence... Looking forward to the next videos.
Lele just commented in the thread that the vibrato is already randomised btw, this adjusts the amount. Still, I think some of those advanced features are not that advanced and most ppl would like to have them.
Cheers Tony, among other things, I will look in the next vid or two at how to set geoshred up to play these, as well as covering the other two bundles, and maybe go into more detail on what parameters are locked etc
It might be worth pointing out that SWAM presets saved on the desktop software will open up correctly in the iOS version, even the supposedly locked advanced parameters are set. Seems to work that way for me anyway...

"Note: since iOS version price will be lower than Desktop version price, some parameters will not be available in SWAM for iOS. *Anyway, a preset saved with the Desktop version will be able to set those parameters on iOS.
Unlock of advanced parameter will be made through IAP."
Yes, indeed, I do briefly brush over some tasty I go related to those parameters in the vid ✌️ thanks for pointing out.
Worth pointing out that this video has had less engagement than I usually get. I'm wondering if it is that these are just priced a bit too high for the iOS market? Or the lack of a better bundle deal? Or that people feel they need an mpe controller etc? Because I would have expected a lot more buzz about something as quality as this.
yup, that's why I'm still on the fence.. really wish there was a balanced bundle deal. I don't need the whole orchestra.
It doesn’t surprise me. These are pretty specialized ... orchestral instruments have less appeal to the average hobbyist (even serious ones) than synths and effects.
It is going to take a while for the iOS market too embrace more serious instruments that are priced accordingly. And part of that will only happen if more serious (as in earning-their-living-from-music) musicians start using mobile devices more.
A very thoughtful video, Gavin. Thanks. I would say a trumpet has more bite than a flugelhorn... more than just bright, tho the flug can have bite as well.
I think fewer folks are interested, on iOS, in better acoustic emulations. More are interested in ambient, experimental... like yourself... and synths.
When you use the SWAM Seaboard preset, does it automatically midi map the expression parameters?
It does, yes, and it maps them sso amazingly well, as I mentioned in the video. Glad you enjoyed the video Mike.
But yes, also as I mentioned in the video, I think these should have huge appeal for people who like ambient and soundscaping etc
This tweet has a clip of the section of my video where I demo these apps used with heavy fx processing, they sound fantastic like this too I reckon
@Gavinski
Haven't watched the video yet as at sea so Internet is bad. Will be interesting to see the Geoshred MPE control of Swam Brass.
I did buy the standard Trumpet last week and was on the beta for all of them. They are really outstanding quality.
I think the price is fair and if people want to see desktop standard apps in the future on iOS I think prices need to increase to reflect this.
I just think brass maybe is a niche market set of instruments for a lot of people who make electronic music.
Really looking forward to when Audio Modelling start throwing out the string and woodwind sets.
Do remember though that the current price is intro price. If the bundles increase by 50 percent, like the individual apps, after the intro period, that means the bundles will be nearly 450 dollars. If the unlock costs 10 dollars an app that would mean that the iOS cost would be identical to desktop. That is a pretty unrealistic ask. Of course, this is just conjecture, I have no idea of what the prices for bundles will be after the intro period, or the price of unlocks. But even 5 bucks unlock per app would bring this too close to desktop prices. I love these apps but you can't really charge identical prices on iOS to desktop. IOS is a far less professional platform and lacks the daws of the features, power and stability that pros use on desktop.
How is expression automated by seaboard. What movement? Not that Id buy a seaboard. Just asking.
Wonder if geoshred will be better than my screen and cloth idea ( with the bt expression pedal arriving ) Hope it dosent have lag.
Tons of vids on seaboard on youtube that would show you that much more effectively than an explanation! But it is not automation, it is expression, you have to do the work 😉
Is it to a slider or the keys?
Wondering if midi for octave +/- might be useful to a blueboard. If it isnt difficult to use both feet. I could then use kb x/y anywhere over Swam. Will have to see if blueboard is ok first though.
It were mainly becuase the expression rate were strobing ( I believe ) so wondering if the high rate is the style. Maybe its tied with velocity?
Watch this Sigma
Youtube is hilarious - I post this trumpets video yesterday, now youtube just played me an ad that had trumpet in it when I viewed the above vid lol
I think its just because its still very niche maybe. I also expected more fuss about things like Staffpad which is really a pro high end tool with pro content but almost no talk about. It is even more niche maybe.
Of course that you really need a good MPE controller is another point. The on screen thing is great and some MPE apps but not quite as expressive to let these really shine maybe.
But I also bet the Strings get more attention since most people seems to collect strings for some reason and often forgot about brass and woodwinds. Percussion is another part. A SWAM percussion would be nice
Thanks Gav. Hope I can make a decent setup with blueboard and screen combo. Wont know till it arrives. Likely just an algorithym the trumpet thing. I think Iv seen people wondering if theres ads based on what they say or maybe from camera enabled. People should be aware if true, as it may cause mental illness maybe.
I decided to keep £200 worth of brass. Not that Im rich. Its just once on ipad. Difficult to let go but they are good so hoping to get kind of a decent control. Geoshred with blueboard. Swam/kb with blueboard etc.
Thanks.
Did u buy all the bundles?
Yeah Geoshred using the expression pad with your left hand is really a pretty decent way to play these
Completed tube and horn bundle. Started with tube eb, french horn. Eupho. Decided the extra octave of bass tuba has character ( which would be least needed ) in electronic music, with effects. A synth could maybe be similar. So I think I get an app for £5.
Flug, trumpet, piccolo.
returned just bass trombone and switched for d bass trombone to go wiith alto and temor.
Will check geoshed mate.
