I just wanna say thanks to whoever it was @moForte that fixed GeoShred in Drambo!

Very happy to see that full screen!

Oh, and yes, much love for the GeoShred here! Don’t even get me started about that Sexy GeoSWAM tenor sax! ❤️

For our next release we will be releasing the transitional Plucked String 1.5 model (The current model is plucked string 1.0). This will include a number of classic plucked stringed instruments, well known guitars, south asian instruments, etc, etc. We will send out a survey in a few days to poll users about what instruments we might do next. You can also simply drop us a note at [email protected]

I'll drop this in email as well, but I'd really like to see a good fretless bass sound in Geoshred. Geoshred seems like the ideal platform for a fretless bass model - it's a fretless instrument on a fretless UI so sliding notes feels easy and natural, slide a note up to add more growl similar to how you've already implemented it for sax, 4ths tuning is perfect, use the expression X-Y control to add harmonics, no extra effects needed beyond what Geoshred already has.

Interested if anyone else here would also vote for a fretless bass sound

Fretless and fretted. All kinds of basses would be welcome.

  • I agree with @NeuM, all kinds of basses would be highly appreciated

  • Yes, GeoShred is right now missing bass guitars. All kinds.
I would also appreciate to have other sounds of guitars.
Also pedal steel guitars (à la Yonac ?)

    In the acoustic area :

    • a better classical guitar with an option for finger noises on note-off events (articulations)
    • Baroque pack : lute, theorbo
    • mandoline (with a variable tremolo option)
    • Mediterranean pack : Oud, Bouzouki + many more
    • Classical harp
    • Asia : Koto, shamizen, ghuzeng, …

    👍

  • Any more latitude to get creative with the modelling engine would be ace, realistic or not, having played with the plasmonic demo a lot, I really love exploring this sort of sound space, it’s just such a rich and expressive environment outside of the traditional subtractive synth space...

  • @moForte i would gladly pay for some IAP bass guitars.

  • I would love to see more realistic guitar modelling, it is an area I feel is lacking on iOS compared to other modelled instruments. Is it harder to model a guitar vs other instruments or as a guitarist am I more tuned to the sound of a guitar so my expectations are higher?

For me, I would like to see a more realistic dry lead guitar sound (with articulations) which works well with external amps/fx. After that my priority would be classical then accoustic, though I would not say no to anything on @Paulo164 ‘s list!

Look forward to hearing the vNext sound engine for the guitar!

Yes. Regarding GeoShred, I would imagine Key-Y up/down to "load" a "string noise" before note-off, the same way a "Pinch harmonics on release" can be currently triggered. Up/down would give the pitch direction of the string noise.
Or maybe the model may use a "Portamento" similar to what GeoSwam instruments currently use : the string noise is produced after the note-off, depending on the next note-on velocity plus a "portamento time" parameter.

It would be nice also to be able to bypass the internal amp to plug directly the dry sound on an external amplifier such as a Nembrini one. Maybe this can already be done by selecting "Bypass" in the "tone stack" section...
Or why not, on Moforte's side, add different modeled amps, giving really different sonic qualities, not just the frequency response.

Anyway, I am looking forward to what Moforte has to propose ! :)

IAPs would be okay for me if options and quality are on the table and if this makes the business model sustainable for everyone.

EDIT : afterwards, I don't think the "Portamento" would be a good option to simulate articulations because you wouldn't have a precise control on when the next note would be ON and had to wait for the portamento to finish.
I think the best is to follow the same principle as "Pinch harmonics on release" but with the possibility to decide on the amplitude and direction (pitch) of the string noise. The option is almost already there...

  • If you guys end up doing a banjo, I really hope you do a Dueling Banjos demo 😁

  • Fretless Bass would be my #1.

Of Asian instruments, Persian setar, santoor (basically a hammered dulcimer), and shahi baaja would be my top picks. The second two should not be too challenging with the current engine.

I’m waiting for someone… anyone… to finally figure out how to best offer the ability to strum AND pick with an iPad based guitar simulator. I’m sure it’s possible, I just haven’t found it yet. Yonac’s Steel Guitar is unmatched for strumming and slide guitar work, but it’s a real chore trying to perform any kind of fast solo. GeoShred is great for fast solos, but the ability to perform realistic strumming is almost non-existent and I’ve never gotten a good beefy, low-end sounding guitar out of GeoShred, whereas Yonac has low-end and fat guitar sounds sewn up.

Probably best to separate the two instead of seeking them in a single app. You can strum with ChordUp or similar apps into any synth.

Also, I like to layer other MPE synths to beef up Geoshred melodic lines. Animoog, Model 15, Shockwave, and SWAM brass are my favorite choices for this.

I would love to have the ability to do on-the-fly solo picking with a Steel Guitar style UI and then resume strumming with a touch or swipe.

Have you ever used the app called “FingerFiddle”? It has a very realistic violin, viola, cello and contrabass with a fretboard and you actually bow the instrument just like the real thing. It’s pretty good. I think what I’m imagining is quite possible.

  • Thanks for everyone's comments on what we might do for new instruments in Model 1.5. I've noted these. We will have a poll going out in the next week to gather further info. I will share the link to the poll on this thread.

Our first App, "moForte Guitar" was focused on strumming. It's still available. We may migrate some of this into a future GeoShred Release. However most users found the "virtual strumming" experience to be lacking due to no haptic feedback. That is, expectations by far exceeded what is possible. That is why we pivoted toward the isomorphic keyboard.

  • No one has ever managed to integrate usable note playing along with strumming in a guitar sim. It would be great if you could add an optional strum bar / along with a row of chord pads in Guitarism.

Other chord based guitar apps allow tapping notes in the chord… some like OMGuitar even let these notes have pitch bend, but being restricted to the chord notes is kind of dull.

I’m fairly sure Geoshred is the last best hope for an app which really represents a guitar and gives access to modes of play other than shredding 😉

Can’t wait for the survey and any available refinement to the guitar model!

Actually, the out of date “Pearl Guitar” app did a pretty good job of it.

+1, absolutely, this was my first thought as well 👊

Maybe the right way would be to enter notes on an external physical keyboard (ie. play a chord) and use an app to strum.
The strumming area would determine finger speed and x-axis position to modulate the sound.

  • Looks like we have new instruments coming.

  • Wow, great news for GeoShred enthusiasts !
Appart from the new world instruments, I note that moForte now has their own « solutions » for violin and cello.
Also, very nice to see they developed wind instruments and not only stringed/plucked, which is really cool.

Geoshred is amazing, it’s just a shame that the vast majority of the presets are swamped by over the top FX.

Agreed. Geoshred is amazing but out of the box a lot of the sounds are tacky (this of course is a matter of taste) and the UI is ugly (again a matter of taste). I also don't really enjoy the way the menus are set up but it is designed as a very powerful and customizable tool.

About Velocity Keyboard: Velocity Keyboard is overrated. It doesn't respond to velocity very well. It really only has a few levels of velocity. You can test this yourself using an app like midi curve. The Geoshred team did a lot of testing on this and Jordan Ruddess and other pro level players found that VK gave nowhere near the level of control they needed. If it had done, Geoshred would have copied VK but they decided not to.

Couldn't have said it better myself :sunglasses:

The physical modeling is top-notch but is severely let down by the UI...
...too much UI space is devoted to the playback area and the font sizes used are barely readable on the 11" iPadPro...

But it does sound good

Indeed Samu. I mean, the guy who basically invented physical modeling was involved in creating Geoshred. Julius O. Smith III. And Pat and his main partner at MoForte are very big brain guys. Pat studied under Julius and has a PhD in this stuff if i recall correctly. Just a pity they didn't have someone more skilled in UI and UX on the team. Nevertheless, I think it remains the most powerful physically modelled synth on iOS.

    Harsh, man.

re: velocity keyboard. While the number of velocity levels in velocity keyboard may be limited, even that limited amount is quite useful and can significantly enhance the expressiveness compared to no dynamics. I'd hardly say that it is overrated. It is quite useful...is it a as good as a good external controller? No, but even a small range of dynamics can make a big difference.

  • Just wanted to share my appreciation for @moForte devs.
In the recent update (5.929.1.2.19) they fixed a bug/problem with key y portamento in the geoswam instruments that I reported to them quite recently through their support email. It was a bit hard to explain so I sent them a short video showing them what I thought was the problem. Their response was quick and they fixed it right in the next update. I’m just a random customer complaining about some problem that wasn’t even discussed in this forum (as far as I can tell) yet, they were attentive and responsive.
    Thank you @moForte !
