That is pretty impressive PaulB
Is there a directory of Soundfonts available somewhere? I remember picking up a few when i first bought the app but i can't recall the link(s).
An alternative for sf2 file sizes (or for those picky about which presets they like using)
Download all the sf2 you can grab from wherever. Some come as multiple instruments in an sf2, some come as single instrument in an sf2. In this situation I want to remove a bunch of noises I wont use from the former and combine in the latter (so I don't have to go loading multiple sf2's but can scroll through multiple instruments inside one)
OSX free software http://polyphone.fr/index.php?lang=en&page=download. Load multiple sf2's ..... you can browse all the instruments. Create a new sf2 for yourself and drag and drop the instrument you want from all the other ones to create a personalised sf2 with whatever set you want
30 mins just got me a lean set of sf2 with exactly what I want ... and a bunch of slightly sketchy sounding things removed! Happy days.
I wanted orchestral - https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1200140

I have both but now only use bs16 due to its superiority of sound using the same samples on both bs16i comes out on top time and again. In fact I deleted soundfont pro to make more room on my 16 gb pad.

The original poster mentions having to use Sfark for some of the sounds. Does that mean those aren't compatible with Bs16i?
Thanks @Tritonman2
Sfark files are like zip files for soundfonts. They just need unarchiving.

Anyone else noticing that there are random increase in velocity/volume levels when playing the iphone keyboard?
Look in the keyboard options under settings. You probably have accelerometer velocity on.
Also the sonatina sound good. Divided up lower in the page by @PaulB (big thanks!)

Are there any guides or tutorials out there for how to set up more than one instrument on a keyboard? Just browsing the app it's not clear to me how to do this.
I don't know for sure but I think you look in the bs16i Settings and save a Scene but you need to config some things in Synthesizer and Keyboard as well. I'm at work and can't really look at it too closely at the moment but that's where I'd look.
I've listened to your track @PaulB very interesting composition. Unfortunately let down by the expressiveness of the sound (or lack of). The only time you'd fool me is towards the end when the sound gets softer at 1:50. Otherwise it just sounds too uniform almost as if the players had infinite bows. I've never attempted orchestral so can only comment from listeners point of view but this is what I've done with thumbjam that made me fall in love with this app. Check it out at 2.30. Excuse the vocals I'm not really a singer.
Apples and oranges, really. What you have emulated is a group of individual instruments, which I agree is best served by the likes of ThumbJam, although if I had to criticise, I'd bring your attention to the fact that each sustained note seems to swell uniformly from the start, which doesn't sound natural to me. It's subtle, but it's there. What I recorded (an improv rather than a composition) was 4 string sections of an orchestra, with legato and detache variants. Listen to a few genuine sustained string orchestra passages and you'll hear the same infinite bowing effect. Also bear in mind that this was bs-16i recorded 'raw'. No added fx, volume manipulation or overdubs. All the dynamics and articulation changes were live and triggered by how I played the touch screen. I'm not saying it's an exact emulation, if that's even possible using samples, but it's close enough to use in a mix if you can't afford an orchestra, and it's worlds away from 'footsteps, dog bark and punch'.
For solo string instruments, I'm a big fan of Thumbjam controlled by iFretless, which gives me accelerometer based velocity sensitivity as well as fingertip vibrato and glissando.
In response I'd say that, yes it has been overdubbed each instrument at the time but it was a quick job really and recorded dry without effect for more realistic sound. I suspected it was an impro so I'm sorry to have called it a composition, my bad. Apart from that as you've said 'apples and oranges' but I'd rather overdub every instrument 10 times to get the right feel rather than doing it using multiple instruments patches.
This is an interesting article on recording string arrangements, including the overdubbing topic.

@PaulB Which soundfont were you using for the orchestra clip? I've tried many different ones and some sound more like recordings of individual instruments instead of a group of them. For me, Squidfont seems the best for giving a full orchestra sound that's not as much like an "infinite bow" sound when it starts to loop. Plus it's got staccato, pizz, and legato for each instrument, where many others do not.
Well spotted. It was indeed squidfont. Legato and Detache variants of 1st and 2nd Violins layered on the upper keyboard and Legato and Detache variants of the Violas and Celli layered on the lower keyboard.
Just wanted to say that those tunes sounded great, PB. Thanks for sharing.
supadom, your tunes were very nice as well. Your vocals are nothing to be excused. I only wish that I could sing as good as you.
Great listening all around. You guys make it sound so easy to record your ideas on an iDevice. Much can be learned from your experiences.
Cheers @Keebo the touchscreen is like a gift from the Gods!

So this is Thumbjam's instruments with you playing the iFretless control surface?
Only the cello was Thumbjam via iFretless, the piano was Chordbot, but yes, cello controlled by iFretless interface.
Just chiming in to say that I'm happy that I downloaded the BS-16i. The soundfonts that are included probably are enough for me, but it's a good thing that I found this video on downloading new ones....

The easiest improvement suggestion I would make to the developer is to give us an easy way to mark our favorite soundfonts. There are way too many selections to sift through in the default Library.
Cheers,

Glad you like bs-16i! I think it's a great app. The suggestion about "favoriting" sounds is a good one, though I tend to change banks 2-4 quite a bit.
So. I've hooked up my technics kn800 keyboard to my iPad. Work great. But in bs-16i the sustain pedal is not working properly. It activates the sustain button on screen, but will only actually sustain when a note is played. Let me explain if I press the sustain pedal and hit a c chord and lift my hand, the sound stops. If I hold e.g a c note and then hit the chord, it will sustain. Until I lift my finger from the c note. If it makes any sense to you at all, please share your thoughts. The sustain works perfect with all other apps I have.
PaulB thank for the accelerometer tip. Only just tried it!
@Jakersjaw What does your keyboard send as MIDI note off messages? Some send note off, some send note on velocity zero. If bs-16i is only ignoring one of these in sustain mode and your keyboard sends the other one, that could explain what you've described.
It may be possible to convert one to the other using the StreamByter feature of MIDIBridge.
BS-16i is the one new app I've been getting into lately - I've learned how to get MIDI files online and get them into BS, and the GM sound bank is superior to those you get on the typical soundcard. Haven't got much deeper than that but I'm happy with the purchase!
