Bass for ambient

What bass app would give me the greatest range of potential for ambient? Or what synth app has a good range of bass presets within it as a starting point for ambient bass for ambient, drone, atmospheres, and soundscapes?

  • Would Agonizer serve me, for example?

  • My only advice is buy it and try it. Agonizer is pretty cool, but like anything it has pluses and minuses.

    What are the minuses?

  • Mononoke and Shoom synths, certainly for ambient atmospheres

Nice, I have those, and hadn't thought of them for the bass elements.

  • Mitosynth has some extreme capabilities. AuGEN X and Droneo for more abstract sounds.

AuGEN X intrigues me, I have the other two. Again, I've used less for bass sounds. I'm leaning into the areas I've so far leant away from in this project. Can you tell me more about AuGEN X?

    Consider drone for a moment.

  • Moog Model D or any of the other apps that take their cues from it. Soften the attack, lengthen the release, add some effects to taste. Instant fretless. Maybe.

I do ambient bass with a fretless into an iPad for effects and recording.

I'm thinking I could do this with iFretless Bass too.

    That’s drone, not bass.

How’s anyone supposed to hit #1 on the AB forum charts without clear instructions on how to do ambient?

  • I use a lot of synths and make ambient, i don’t know that there is a best honestly but i use bleass alpha, zeoon, moog model 15, and Magellan 2 a lot for bass . One of My fav synths is korg odyssei but it isn’t an auv3 but i use multi instance of it in gadget to lay out bass lines. Mirack has a lot of potential as well as mononoke.
Can you give a song example of the particular bass sound you are looking to create

Thank you. I'm still trying to find my way into MiRack. I have and love Zeeon, and Model 15. I don't know Magellan. Odyssey has tempted me before, but so far, not enough to buy it.

I can't give a specific example, but the deeper tones of drone and dark ambient, as ambient is my main genre, as I'm working on some live ambient sound bath projects right now. I'm not making this music in the traditional sense, but as an aid to meditation and contemplation for my clients and students. I teach silent practices, which I have begun to weave into ambient music also.

I love soft sounds particularly, and granulated effects laid over my synths, softening synths and felt pianos with Attack Softener.

AuGEN X started out as a signal generator and has turned into a noise machine with a ton of parameters exposed and therefore accessible to LFOs etc. Not too keen on the current price tbh.

It makes me think of Fundamental, which I have, and love.

Apparently the inside jokes are too inside these days. Just having a bit of fun based on old forum posts about ambient. In all seriousness, there are no rules. If it sounds good, use it.

Touché. Model D (Bass 145 Patch) is a great, cuts through a mix! Bass 808 (Upright patch, root C0) is nice. Mammoth is a great bass amp to add on. I assume you are looking for low end warmth.

No worries. I'm still a bit too new around here for inside jokes. I'm listening, and open to advice, and yes, it's all about the sound and the gut feeling ultimately, but a little inside advice can also help noobs like me along.

Them’s the rules, @lukesleepwalker just enforces them. 😎

Same idea. Fundamental is modelled after one of @Hainbach’s old test generators. AuGEN X has less character (perhaps? dunno) but the GUI is less fiddly and the app is much lighter ob the CPU.

I can imagine having room for both. I have some lovely presets for Fundamental, from Deehorn Organ.

  • @andowrites do you own spacecraft granular? One trick i use is to record anything stringy and then pitch it down using SC and then granularize very slowly.

Low end warmth. Yes! I have Model D but rarely find it appealing. I must listen again. It's interface aversion. 😊

Yes, I have SC. And love granular. Maybe I'll try exploring iFretless through granular. Thanks!

You never know! Use that attack softener too!
