Voice DC30 Custom Valve by Nembrini Audio

edited March 2021 in General App Discussion

Description:

Voice DC30 Custom Valve Guitar Amplifier plugin is characterised by it's "jangly" high-end sound it has become widely recognized by British musicians and others.

Voice DC30 Custom Valve is capable of both enchanting clean and raucous overdriven sounds, the signature chime of the Voice DC30 Custom pairs Valve seamlessly the intricacies of your playing style, resulting in a sound that is truly your own.

Brilliant channel and Top Boost
The Voice DC30 has a separate brilliant channel. This has been achieved by adding a gain stage and a ‘cathode follower’ stage, thereby dropping the impedance and bringing up the current and adding Bass/Treble controls to this channel.

The brilliant channel with optional top boost is placed after the volume control section and before the phase inverter. This means you can shape the sound after the distortion.

The Vib-Trem channel offered a choice between vibrato (wavering pitch) and tremolo (wavering amplitude). A rotary, three position Speed switch adjusted the the rate of modulation.

The Voice DC30 Custom Valve guitar amplifier plugin includes a complete recording chain emulation and our custom design noise gate circuit.

Works as a standalone app, AudioUnit v3 effect, or Inter-App Audio effect

  • I think I have to buy this for the dad joke name alone. I really hope the ‘“subtle” implication of analog vs. digital was intentional, too.

These guys keep their promises!!! 👊🏼🙃
What do you mean with dad joke, I maybe slowly in thinking right now 🙈

  • I was on this beta for the last week or so... this is an absolute must-have.

Considering that this is not a prototypical Nembrini high-gain amp, it may be the most interesting and unique amp that Nembrini has ever released. All three channels can be pushed into overdrive if you max out the volume on each, yet the amp has no gain switch nor distortion channel. Nembrini amps are known for having lots of character and analog color, and this is no exception. The default preset introduces a throaty mid prominent krrrraaaang, with a subtle and inoffensive thud, and an absolutely gorgeous roomy reverb circuit. The knob controls are really particular for this amp and will do different things from what one would expect, so it’s important to read the manual and to read up on the actual Vox model that this is based on. Vox AC30 top boost is known for its jangly chime clean and overdriven sounds as well as mid prominent headroom, and Nembrini definitely delivers the “clean-ish” side of the brilliant top boost as well as the rich saturated overdrive of that same circuit. Those looking for the most pristine clean sound of all time should understand that Nembrini is always going for colorful character and an “analog” type response, rather than the most sterile clean tone.

So far I’ve provided some filler, but here is the heart of the matter. The Vib-Trem channel emulation on this is one of the bests things I’ve ever heard in a guitar sim. According to Nembrini the circuit is actually a mix of tremolo and chorus, and there’s a certain weeping echo to the tone underneath the pulse. I think it will make this release famous. I even love using the Vib-Trem channel with the speed all the way down and the volume all the way up. It’s that good.

“Come for the Chime, Stay for the Vib-Trem circuit”

Nembrini has many more amp and effect emulations on the way. A Fender Bassman will come some time this year, among others.

    Viva Nembrini!

    This thing sings really well.
    Edit: It sounds fantastic!

  • Insta-bought!

I do believe my iOS amp collection is complete.
At this point, if I feel I need to buy any more amp sims, I'm just making up excuses for my own shortcomings. Gonna just play now, and leave all the esoteric tone chasing to others.

Compared to previous Nembrini offerings, I feel like there are more good and usable IRs than usual, and the presets are also balanced and not out of whack. There are preset subgroups for “Strat”, “Les Paul”, and “Brian May”.

I would suggest not using the “noise gate” at all, hearing the full spectrum circuitry on this is part of the pleasure!

@flo26 how about that vib-trem circuit! The guitar is crying inside of it!

  • Thumbs up from @JoyceRoadStudios AND Flo?!?!?

Please take my money now!!!! 😊

During the beta @JoyceRoadStudios, you had mentioned there wasn’t much of a focus on the clean tones. Did they take your advice in that matter? Can’t remember if it was frequencies with the amp itself, presets, or cab options, but just curious what if anything changed.

Also, are you using the Nembrini IRs or the Ownhamers??? I see Nembrini has at least one Orange cab in there. Have you tried the Alnico Blues with it? Also curious how it responds with your favorite ‘Zilla cabs!

  • Can’t wait to run my Brian May pedals through this baby!

  • I’ve always wanted one of these amps and this is close enough for me, well nice on first play!

So much to try, so little time! My comment about the clean tones had to do with the presets only being “clean-ish”. When I try out an amp I also mostly concentrate on the breaking point of the clean headroom. I will have to play it more to establish how clean it can get, but I’m sure @flo26 will have a more definitive answer for this. My impression is that this amp likes to growl, does the brilliant top boost really well, and employs a vib-trem circuit that will make you weak in the knees.

For the sake of authenticity I’m using the OwnHammer Vox AC15/30 “sweet spot” IR with this, but I think it also sounds good with some of their stock IRs. I will test the rest soon.

  • Video demo to come in a few minutes.
Having owned this exact amp for a few months at home i can say this app has this vox flavour.
    Very enjoyable.
Oh and in my demo i use nembrini ir cab.it sounds good enough to my ears.

  • Well that’s really saying something, Flo!

Glad to hear they have upgraded their IRs.

Now what am I to do with the 14,000 independent IRs I purchased last year?!?!?!? 🤓

Don’t worry, there are many amp sims with which you,can use them😉😉.

  • Desktop version introductory price USD 39! WOW!

  • I dig the AC30 but AC15 is in my top 3 of all time amps. Any chance they gonna tackle that one next, y'figure?

  • Yeah, I proposed an AC15/30 combo when Nembrini alluded to an upcoming Vox app months ago. That would have been wonderful and easy to do since it's all virtual anyway...

From what I've heard a Fender Bassman is next on their release list so we may have to wait quite a while for a 15.

In the meantime you might was to consider getting some of the Ownhammer Vox IRs. Search for AC15 on their site and they have a number of speakers — including the silver Vox speakers used in early models of the amp:

  • This one is REALLY good. Maybe Nembrini’s best yet.

Cool, thanks. I like Bassman too!

@lukesleepwalker at least for the cabinet stage, the OwnHammer rEvolution bundle will get you there.
1 of the 6 IR collections in the bundle is the
112VC15/SLV-12B, which is the Vox AC15 1X12 hardwood combo with a 1967 silver Alnico. The bundle also has extras in the form of IR mixes, and one of the mix collections is the 112VC15/SLV-12B + 212VC30/BLU-12C, so the aforementioned silver mixed with a 2001 Alnico blue. Both the AC15 and the 15/30 mix IRs happen to be my favorites in the collection. I love pairing them in an unorthodox way with amps like bst100 and Cali reverb, and have been using them with the new Voice DC30 as well for “authenticity”. The stock IRs also come with a bunch of Alnico blues and sound pretty good. So it’s not your coveted AC15 but the cabinet and speaker can get there, and they’ve always played an important part in the tone. By the way, it’s worth mentioning that this Nembrini emulation is based on a Vox from the 1979-1984 era (stated in their marketing materials), so it’s not a vintage ‘60s emulation.

Which brings me to my next point.

@SNystrom regarding your comment about it being “easy to do since it’s all virtual”, I think it’s more complicated than that. Nembrini markets themselves as aiming to recreate every part of the analog circuit, and often that involves taking apart or testing an actual specimen. Based on our communications regarding the desire for Nembrini to release legendary pedal emulations, the biggest obstacle is having access or being able to afford an actual specimen to base it on. So it’s not just about code and algorithm. It has to do with recreating the things companies or individuals already own, have access to, or want to purchase. Look at the th-u rigs for example, many of them are a friend’s amp or some gigging amp they came across. I don’t see these devs buying 2k amps just to make emulations of them, though many do make sims without ever having heard or dissected the hardware version.

My point in all of this is that we all need to pay attention to what’s actually being released, an early ‘80s era Vox AC30, and Nembrini did a fantastic job with it even if it’s not the exact one people expected. Let’s consider a previous release of theirs, the Soundmaster. So many people were surprised and confused, expecting a vintage Fender sim of their dreams with its signature sound. But the Fender Tonemaster is actually a modern Fender hard rocker amp from the ‘90s, designed by Bruce Zinky (custom shop), and it was discontinued around 2004. It’s a 100watt tone monster head rather than a vintage combo, and it’s probably what Nembrini chose to emulate based on access and niche appeal, rather than catering to the usual Fender crowd. Thus customer expectation has had a polarizing effect on the app, though it’s a really good one.

And as far as the Bassman goes, who even knows if it will be based on an actual ‘59 tweed or the reissue version, or a cbs era Bassman 50 head, or another model. I have my preferences, but we shall see.

As for the AC15, I doubt Nembrini will release one after already doing the 30, but who knows. It’s possible Overloud could release a whole rig for it, they already have the Vox AC15 Heritage Boost in their “British Classics” rig collection by the way, so that’s even based on the real amp! Amplitube 5 doesn’t have it in the list of models either (apparently 5 is coming to iOS at some point).

  • Damn, this sounds really good

  • I’ve posted a clip of the ChowCentaur running through the Brilliant channel

  • Yeah, @JoyceRoadStudios, you're probably right. They do seem very meticulous, but as you may recall, Andrea from Nembrini asked us if we wanted an AC15 or 30 at one point. That made me believe they had access to both.

It's too bad they are in Italy and not in the states — especially L.A. & Nashville. Joe Bonamassa has "Nerdvilles" there with what is quite possibly the greatest college of vintage amps ever assembled...

Just imagine what those guys could create...

I get the feeling Joe will ultimately allow someone to model a few — if he hasn't already.

As for the Bassman, I'm hoping for a tweed or blackface myself, but will probably be happy with whatever they come up with...

  • If you guys haven't seen them, the videos are great:

They could totally do another Vox, who knows! They’ve already done two Mesas, though if they tackled a trem-o-verb (unlikely) or the Mark V (hopeful) I’d be all over it.

  • Yeah, me too!

I was surprised at the two Boogies, but honestly, I think their hearts reside in high gain amps.

I would love for them to release a Vibroverb, but honestly if they release something, I’m gonna buy it.

  • I’d be really giddy if they did a Twin

  • I think the Vibroverb or Super would please the Fender nerds like me.

  • @JoyceRoadStudios thanks for the info on the Ownhammer bundle; makes sense and I'll give it a whirl. I am firmly in the camp of mixing/matching amps and cabinets. I searched for the right speakers for my own custom-built 59 Marshall (based on the Bassman), thinking "inside the box" with regards to the commonest speakers in the Marshall cabinet world (V30s, etc). It wasn't until I tried some knock-off Alnico Blues that I was like "THAT'S IT!" I then started using some emulations when recording (just easier than throwing a mic on a cabinet and nobody could tell the difference) and couldn't find the right tone until I paired the AC15 amp with a single Alnico Blue or a pair of 'em. So, who knows, maybe it's not an actual AC15 that I'm looking for!
