atom2 and launchpad videos here please
As i don’t have a launchpad, i still can’t wrap my mind around how well in works with atom2. so if you guys have videos, please post em here

Have you used one with a desktop DAW?
i’ve never used one. looks fun though
In that case, do you understand how it works with one? Like, what it's functions are and how it does those things? Just trying to establish a baseline.
Agonizer is my go-to app to establish a bassline.
Oh... you meant...
Yes, I do like Agonizer. Pity they spelt it wrong.
I am a noob to MIDI myself and therefore it's controllers and therefore the Launchpad. My understanding of MIDI is currently languishing at using Control Change messages. How do I press a button on my Launchpad to control the change of an Oscillator from 45 to 62? By ear? I mean, if I'm watching a screen then why use a controller?
I tend to overthink things. Plus, there are numbers for the Channel (1 - 16). Numbers for the message I send to that channel (1 - 127). Numbers for the Changes I make to that... Message? Control? See!? Aaand we're off!
I haven’t worked out changing cc’s using a launchpad yet. I think you have to setup custom modes.
CCs themselves are just channels and number values - it’s the apps themselves that decide how to interpret them. Some are kinda reserved like CC 7 for volume, or CC 10 for pan. So send CC 7 value 0 to a synth that’ll normally mute the volume.
But a lot of synths don’t have any or many cc’s mapped so you can map them yourself using midi learn or midi routing in an app like AUM.
I appreciate you taking the time to say that.
"Send a CC value of zero..." How do I choose a value using a key press from my Launchpad? I guess it's done using a custom mode? Seems a bit clunky to have to set up a custom mode to tell the LP to choose zero when I press that pad. Maybe that's why the LPD8 is so popular? It's cheap and has pads and knobs.
I haven’t done cc’s from the launchpad yet. Have a look into custom modes: https://novationmusic.com/en/news/launchpad-custom-modes
For me currently, launchpad is for launching clips in LK/atom etc which just works without any setup. I have a launchpad pro so also having fun with the built in sequencer.
Yeah, the sequencer is another rabbit hole. I think part of it is that there is a chain of events that have to be snagged. Like, is this bit wrong or that bit? And you have to change just one thing, try it out change it back and try another in order to solve any problems along that chain. Plus with my midi gear, sometimes it just doesn't work and knowing that it is that or a problem I have created tends to just make the whole thing less fun.
BUT! I will not be beaten by this colourful devil.
Have a great day.
I'm going to make one, but I'm not sure if I will be able to do that this week. Atom 2 is pretty deep and I need time to learn how it works. Don't want to put out a half assed video, even if it's just seen by a few people.
Thank you for volunteering to do this! Let me know if I can help with anything.
Cool, thanks. If I have questions I'll message you! Probably going to spend most of the weekend with Atom 2 to see how it works with the Launchpad Pro and then we'll see
AudioKit’s SUB 808 Bass for me! 😝👊🏻
Does (or will) Atom2 support LP Pro mk3’s “Print to Clip” function?
Unfortunately the function is not documented by Novation, so not yet. However, @FloRi89 did some incredible investigative hacking to reverse-engineer it, so I hope we can add it to Atom at some point.
Aha! You and I, we are thinking alike. You know what, it acutally might get it. I did some reverse engineering for blueveek to see how this works, since the feature isn't documented by Novation. It's not really straightforward though so I don't know if he had time to implement it. That would be killer if you ask me
Edit: Ah, he was faster in answering
. So no, not yet.
very cool - thanks @FloRi89 and @blueveek.
It would indeed be killer to jam out basic sequences in the LPP, then print to Atom2. Best of all worlds... use LPP's hands on creative workflow, then use Atom2 to surpass LPP's limits of 32 steps, 4 channels, polyphony, etc.
I spent the whole evening yesterday exploring this, so how you can combine the LP and Atom 2. I found an easy solution how to get the sequenze into Atom 2, even without Print 2 Clip. Hard to describe though, so tonight I'll start working on this video
Launchpads aren’t ideal for sending continuous midi CCs. If you need to turn an onscreen knob or a slider you’d want a controller with a knob or a slider. Launchpad does have faders in custom modes but you’ll either love of hate them and they’re definitely very different from what physical knobs and faders are.
Buttons generally send a static CC value so you can set a CC5 to transmit value of 45 but generally there’s no practical use for this, that’s where you need a continuous sender to be able to change values errrr..continuously.
Many people complain about launchpads lacking knobs like Ableton push.
So from my short experience with launchpad x I’d say that it excels at clip launching, finger drumming, muting/unmuting and scales. Other than that you’ll likely need another controller with knobs and/or faders.
Sticking with the modular theme, a LaunchControl XL pairs beautifully with a LaunchPad. I just wish they'd refresh the LCXL with encoders with status LEDs rather than pots. Similar updated styling would be nice, too.
Cheers for that, @supadom.
I had a bloody LCXL! I have decided to keep everything I buy now but I sold that before I had made that decision. I thought it might be decent paired with the LP. Sliders and knobs with a few pads too. I'll have to put up with the LPD8 until I get one again.
Akai MidiMix is also worth considering. Here I have LPX and MidiMix all being powered by lightning port from pro 10.5 which is actually quite amazing. Novation Launch Control requires a bit more power and all you get is a light show
Appreciate your input, @supadom. I'll have a look at the Akai.
Very helpful, @supadom. I’m just looking at aggregating all my stuff into one ecosystem, and I had been waiting for Atom2 to unify things.
Is there any reason to think that it will be tricky to have a Launchpad X launching Atom midi clips while a LaunchControl is mapped to AUM faders and knobs etc?
EDIT: So I have this open last night to ask this question. I hit send and I see that it is been well covered already! Thank you!
I’d love an akai midimix, just dunno why there’s not a Bluetooth version. I’ve got a Bluetooth lpd8 and lpk25 so I reckon that would complete the Bluetooth set
Here's a video of a quick 90's DnB Launchpad Livejam I created with Atom 2.
Unfortunately I don't have the rigging to set up an overhead video of me tapping the Launchpad, so this explanation photo will have to do for now..
So here you go, I also made one that explains the basics. Not such sophisticated sound then tk32 though
.
Excellent video and juts what i needed. Thanks, time to hook up the LP pro
Excellent video @FloRi89
I hope you consider recording more videos like this as you learn all the exciting possibilities of Atom2.
