  • I think that’s just a rendering, but there are a lot of people in Apple’s supply chain who leak information. Unfortunately.

  • Hope the thunderbolt port is true, will make iPad much more useful for video.

What? I was agreeing with you!. Shitty emoji communication...
Those were “I’m enfuriated at the Thunderbolt wish”. I’d rather it incorporated a cookie cutter.

Cool beans! Thanks. I am not that interested in dongles and cables, but making music.... it needs dedicated persons to keep track of that :) thanks for your reply

  • It’s the same usb-c connection just bigger bandwidth, but I’m hoping the port is in addition to the current usb-c, which is what the rumour implies...but who knows?

...and the release of Final Cut Pro on iPad Pro?

  • Apple should add a few more USB-C ports to the 'iPad Pro' models...
...the 'dongle/hub-h*ll' is not exactly 'Pro' it's a lame excuse for not including enough ports on the device to begin with!

I mean even the SD-Card slot is rumored to make a comeback on the 'next gen' MacBook Pro's...
...and they still ship with the 3.5mm jack. So removing the 3.5mm jack was not 'courage' it was stupidity and greed.

What if the next iPad Pro's ship with 3.5mm Jack, 2 USB-C ports and an SD-Card slot?

Not gonna happen but this would be cool af! Having a little Micro sd slot as storage 🤔

    ^^^ THIS ^^^

A single port on a device to do everything is plain old ridiculous. Every issue I have with my ipad stems from this. There is nothing “pro” about it. In the real world, “pros” have to interface with other equipment. (And no, bluetooth is not the answer)

Just one more port would solve a ton of issues I have. It would be glorious if the new ipads had a 3.5mm Jack, 2 USB-C ports and an SD-Card slot. Not getting too excited about it though. Apple has a way of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Or slow rolling features to maximize profits.

  • This year i skipper new mac, new apple watch, new Iphone and I promised to myself to skip also the new Ipad. I can do it ;-) Monkey leaves me alone.

I wish the new iPads will allow to connect a portable touchscreen and then extend to it. That would be marvelous. Probably the upgrade to Thunderbolt is a sign for that. Why would you connect two monitors if they would both show the same?

  • The question I have is when are they going to increase the size of iPads beyond 12.9? I'd kill for a 15" iPad

Just give me even an old 2.5mm jack - I can live with that!

Problem with Thunderbolt is that there are hardly any docks that provide multiple other Thunderbolt ports, usually only USB-A. The needed circuits are just recently available. Existing docks are pricy.

Definitely. After going to the 12.9 Pro, I can’t imagine using anything smaller now. 15-16” would perfect IMO. I love the size of the Wacom 15.6” MobileStudio Pro.

Just give me a widescreen 12” Pro

  • Thunderbolt on iPad is very interesting. Faster data transfer is always good.

For me the bigger advancement would be for iOS to be able to handle dual video output (ie iPad plus a separate display that is not just mirrored).

Also, the original article linked in this thread is a bit click-baity. Here’s the source:
    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-17/apple-nears-launch-of-new-ipads-after-stay-at-home-sales-boost

  • There's really no room in the iPad Pro to accommodate any more ports with the current design. Let's hope they just keep the one that's there! I don't think we'll ever see a headphone jack again. Clearly, Apple is all in with wireless headphones, earbuds, etc.

  • Sometime in April now I heard?

  • Original source clarifies a few things:

coming in April, not “later this month”

A14x is rumored to be more powerful, and on par with M1 (not putting M1 in iPad)

Where exactly do you put additional ports on a device primarily designed to be held in the hands in a variety of orientations?

  • As the individual ports get faster and are able to pass audio, video, network, power, etc., simultaneously, I've come to appreciate the one-port-on-iPad, hub-required design. If I think of the hub as a docking station, it all makes sense. When I'm at my synth making music, I need power, connection to audio I/F, MIDI In/Out, wired headphones, all that. When I'm not at my desk, I want a clean tablet free of all that stuff, and I'm happy to listen to music over bluetooth. All my connections stay with the hub, and I only have to plug one thing in and out to get everything working.

My complaint with the hub model is that the USB-C connection is fairly fragile. Most of the hubs have a fairly stiff cable in the 6" to 8" range, which is an odd length that leaves the hub dangling with stress on the plug. My iPad Pro USB-C port now only works in one orientation now, I assume because the internals have been slightly bent, making firm contact a problem. I recently got a hub with no cable that sits flush against the side of the iPad, which is an improvement, but there are not actually any mechanical connections to make the grasp firm. We'll see how it ages...

Sounds like it's just the one port still anyway, but you could easily have two ports next to each other just like on a Mac or PC, there's plenty of space on an ipad especially 12.9 models, I wouldn't expect more ports on the smaller models anyway.
I think larger pro models should have extra benefits other than screen size.

Not on the inside. Watch a teardown of the 2020 Pro: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad+Pro+12.9-Inch+4th+Gen+Teardown/132459.
