They can design a new version if they wanted
That’s what I also hope for. These portable touch screen displays really became affordable. Imagine extending your iPad with something like this:
You can usually chain thunderbolt though, so that may not be an issue. I have a thunderbolt 2 dock for my MacBook Pro and am able to go into that then out to my Apollo rack. I could go out of my Apollo rack into something else but I don’t have something else...my hub also includes hdmi, which is why I needed it.
But, Covid killing the live sound market has resulted in me not being able to upgrade anything, so I’ll be waiting until another time to change out any equipment.
Anything ranging from 15”-17” would be fantastic.
Rumor has it there will be an announcement near the end of this month. Possibly new iMacs, new iPads.
8 gb?
I want a special edition Ipad for musicians with a build in i/o board so I don't to drag around a million wires and dongles and powered usb hubs with their own temperate batteries in order to use an audio interface
only ONE USB-C cable needed: https://www.solidstatelogic.com/products/ssl2
Ah ok. Then I am sorry being rude. I was receiving: how dumb are you, man...?!?
I was not aware that these two plugs are the same but have different possibilities as I am simply not too interested in plugs, cables and data transfer protocols
Well, but if most of your devices aren't Thunderbolt-3 the chaining does not help. For example my monitor has USB-C but it's not Thunderbolt.
Which dock do you have? The cheaper ones I know usually just offer USB-A and additionally other stuff like card readers, HDMI, ethernet, etc. I'm not really interested in the latter. What I want is a dock that I connect to the iPad and then allows to connect some more USB-C devices: power supply for PD to the iPad, a USB-C audio device and my monitor. Ideally the USB-C ports are Thunderbolt and the USB-A ports are 3.1 and powered, so I can connect my USB MIDI hardware, Launchpad, etc.
Show me any dock/hub that has two or more Thunderbolt connectors and is below $200. I found only docks from elgato, CalDigit or Belkin but they cost 200-400 USD. Looks like the circuits needed for that are available just recently with the release of Thunderbolt-4.

At least there is a dock with 4 USB-C ports for around $50: https://www.sitecom.com/en/usb-c-hub-4-port/cn-386/p/1881
Here a picture from an amazon buyer using it with a 2020 iPad Pro:
So much about possibilities to utilize your single Thunderbolt port on an iPad apart from connecting Apple's 5K monitor
I have thunderbolt 2, not thunderbolt 3 because I’m on a 2012 MacBook Pro. The dock I use is a Belkin but I don’t remember the model name. There’s not many thunderbolt 2 docks
Either way I’m not going to be buying an iPad Pro. The regular iPad works well for me and so far my 2018 iPad is running well.
I think owc just launch a tb4 hub that makes 4 TB ports out of one. Could be good stuff !
I read your comment as “4 terabyte ports” and thought... “what?”
Is that a headphone jack I see? Be still my beating heart.
I’d love a 15”-16” iPad Pro. Something pro-level music, video and art production could be executed with no issues.
Yeah this would be my ideal right now too
I know being a dongle apologist can be addicting, but you look insane saying that buying a $300 piece of kit to make the $300 ipad useful in the studio is the best we can do.
That’s not depicting a possible new iPad. It’s a portable touch screen. If the new iPad would allow to do dual screen with such a monitor you could double your screen estate. That’s what I hope for.
That’s way to big for a tablet in my opinion. I find a second screen option much better. A lot of screen estate at your desk but still very portable on the go or on the sofa.
Thunderbolt possibly coming to the iPad is great news for me. I use that functionality all the time on my MBP bouncing between USB-C device and my CalDigit TS3+ which is Thunderbolt 3. So many times now I've gone to plug my TS3+ into my 11" iPad Pro and realized it won't work because the iPad is only USB despite using the same connector.
If we could get pass through charging too that would be awesome. I was debating about upgrading this cycle, but it would be an instabuy for me if this Thunderbolt rumor plays out.
👍🏼
I realise that, I’m just more excited about the headphone jack on that screen than the screen itself.
LOL, Apple do you read that. 😂
Why don’t people just buy M1 MacBook Airs instead of iPads now? They come with a free keyboard, too.
In other news, the other week I bought a Thunderbolt 3 cable from Apple for my MacBook Pro (turned up next day, which was nice). £40! Forty fucking quid, for a short cable! Needed it because I’d just bought a secondhand very well priced BlackMagic Ultrastudio Mini Recorder 3G, and it can’t work over thunderbolt 2 from my Mac mini via the Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adaptor, because the latter adaptor isn’t powered and doesn’t pass through power to the Ultrastudio. As I found out. Oh well.
But yes, you really have to beware when you’re buying cable, there’s a lot on eBay that are only USB3 but because they use a USB-C connector the seller thinks it’s okay to say it’s thunderbolt. If it hasn’t got that logo on, it isn’t.
Even just buying USB-C cables you have to be careful, not all are created equal. The whole standard seems a complete mess to me, different devices talking different protocols over different cables that all look identical and all fit in the same hole.
I just did! My 2018 12.9 iPad Pro died due to broken/failed USB-C connector. For the same money to replace it, I got the M1 MacBook Air 8GB / 256GB, and a Samsung T7 1TB SSD. It's simply amazing. I'm still poking at the screen, but I'm getting quite comfortable. I've side-loaded some iOS apps that appeared would work in Logic Pro X such as Pure Synth Platinum, Syntronik, Korg Module Pro, Moog Model 15 and Spacecraft. Out of all these, so far only Korg Module Pro actually shows up as an AU.
Note that all the above apps and more such as NS2, BM3, Cubasis all work within the "iOS" environment, and can be used together. I seem to have pretty much all the best parts of the iPad and a huge reserve of power to run with. I'm still not sure whether Apple could adequately mimic the pinpoint precision that a mouse and an unobscured cursor provides for LPX on a screen this size (13" vs 12.9").
Anyway, it's a fun machine that I feel future-proofs me nicely.
I’m writing an article tomorrow about thunderbolt on the iPad. I have a couple of things I’d like to get your opinions on.
If I wanted a laptop, I wouldn’t have purchased a tablet.
😂👍
Imagine extending a iPhone with this. 🤯
