What’s on your master ?
Just wondering what everyone’s master channel looks like these days. Feel free to post a screenshot and quick explanation why it works for you.
I’ve been trying to keep things simple lately in AUM with just a limiter, EQ and Koalafx for on the fly madness.
What’s on your master?

Nothing usually. I try my hardest to just make the song as a whole sound good while writing and "mixing" it, that way I don't need to think of mastering as anything other than just boosting the final volume to where I want it to be. But I know I tend to do things as simply as possible these days too.
Nothing. If I’m going to master something I’ll take a mix from a master and work on the stereo mixdown with mastering tools in something like Ozone.
Probably for the best, dealing with mastering engineers is the worst. 😉
Usually just a compressor, either MixBox or Smoov. This is something recent for me. Mastering apps, including Cubasis3 mastering strips don’t work for me.
Interesting insights. I’m always interested in hearing effective “less is more” workflows. Thanks for sharing guys.
I switch from DDMF chain to FabF to Toneboosters
Great question! RX950 for some vintage sampler grit to Fab L for some control. Sometimes Lo Fly Dirt or Reelbus is in place of RX950 and DDMF Magic in place of Fab L. I love herbs and spices; analogue warmth... I will start integrating Mixbox modules into my chain.
im all over the place... really depends on the track. anything from DDMF, Directional EQ, MixBox, WOOT, PRO MB, PRO-Q, PRO-L, Tape Pro, BarkFilter, Looperator etc etc etc. sometimes all the above
I will usually “mix through” a compressor, so MixBox as glue on several busses, or MDES for subtle colorful compression on busses or a single track. So after mixing and applying effects, on the master strip I will have only FabFilter Pro-MB, FabFilter Pro-Q3, and FabFilter Pro-L2. Then after mixdown, I will re-import the finished stereo track and possibly apply another dose of Pro-MB or Pro-Q3, though extremely rarely and only if I need the track to shift into something more mids prominent or need to squeeze out more dynamics. I think on a case by case basis it can make sense to master inside the multi track project using the master strip, or mix it down first and then re-import and use master strip. During mixing, a master strip can just have MDES, ProQ, and ProR on it for example, and then you mixdown and actually master it. There’s no hard rule for any of this, but I have found that artful compression works for me during mixing rather than mastering, and limiting can be useful post mixdown.
In conclusion, my answer is Pro-MB, Pro-Q3, and Pro-L2. These are my indispensable tools.
A bus compressor for some subtle glue, and Pro L2 to target the track loudness to around -14 LUFS.
And Morphit at the end of the chain, but I obviously disable that for mixdown.
When jamming, just a limiter on master track.
When arranging, usually FabFilter Pro-Q and Pro-L. I'll use lighter weight eq on individual tracks, as well as compressor on drums.
I’m doing it similar as @richardyot.
Anyone know if the Fabfilter pro bundle ever goes on sale?
https://apps.apple.com/us/app-bundle/fabfilter-pro-bundle/id1469377147
Could find it listed on App Sliced. O
It’s already quite a deal, but would be worth waiting for a Memorial Day or Black Friday sale.
Still waiting for it to come to iOS.
Yes, it was last on sale during last years Black Friday sale. Pretty significant drop in price as well if I remember rightly.
Cool!
Thanks. Starting my Black Friday list now... 😉
Used to do Fabfilter. Now I’m Toneboosters 100%. Compressor, Eq, Enhancer, Barricade. Probably too much stuff but my ears were raised in the ‘80s.
Yea I keep a running list of apps I’m looking at...
I just responded to your DM in case you missed it, but when the FF Bundle dropped it was approximately $30 off, I think it was $89.99. When it was on sale for a week of BF, and again for maybe 2 weeks around XMas and New Year’s. Those amounts of time are estimated.
Also, whatever price you paid for an app, that’s in a bundle, should be deducted from the total bundle price when buying that bundle. So if there’s 1 or 2 FF apps you want now, with plans to get the bundle, the price you pay for those apps should be deducted from total bundle price when you decide to purchase it. Just a thought in case you wanted 1 or 2 of the apps now, and fill in the rest later.
I leave it empty until I know I need something there. Typically TB EQ, Bark Filter, maybe Tape Cassette 1, 2, or Pro.
An EQ to roll off ultra low bass.Toneboosters barricade for limiting. If I want a more analog sound I'll add their tape emulator.
Wow, didn’t know you could do masters, on AUM.
Thanks..
I’ve pondered putting Koala FX on master bus, I’m definitely gonna try it now.
I work in NS2. When doing preliminary levels adjusting, nothing. When doing the EQing portion of mixing down, I use NS2's StereoGain to make the mix mono. When doing final levels adjusting, I mix into NS2's basic limiter.
When mastering a single track, I use MagicDeathEyeStereo, StereoGain to gainstage, BarkFilter Tripleband, and Pro-L2 (iPad)/Barricade (iPhone/iPad). When mastering multiple tracks, I use an EQ to balance the mix to other mixes before going into MagicDeathEyeStereo.
Usually just a compressor for some glue, preferably MagicDeathEyeStereo
There is no master in AUM. You have to roll your own but it’s dead simple. Instead of letting your tracks output to your audio device, change it to a mixbus. Then you create one audio track that receives from that mixbus and sends to your audio device. On that track you can put your master FX. Nice, uh.
BTW, I also add a steep 30 Hz cut as lower frequencies than that cannot be reproduced by most audio equipment and just wastes a lot of energy.
This will also allow you to make a louder master for streaming services, since removing low-end energy gives you more headroom.
Keep in mind that the Koalafx compressor has a bug.
After being activated, the signal has digital aliasing even if you turn the compressor all the way back down to zero again.
The only way to get rid of the aliasing is by restarting koalafx and never activating the compressor again.
It’s reverse delay has a similar issue.
Not normal aliasing, but strange effect on the signal remains after disabling the effect.
Restarting the plug-in is the only way to get it back to normal again.
Right... interesting... Thanks..
