What are your favourite step poly arp power user tips?
I might do a video on this soon. As anyone who has read the manual or played around with the more esoteric features will know, it is hella deep! What are some of the cool things you have done with this? If anyone suggests anything interesting and less obvious I'll be happy to mention yoyu in the vid if the suggestion gets included!

You can trigger patterns instantaneously with cc21.
So I was using a Mozaic script to trigger patterns in multiple SPA's to create a scene based workflow. My only issue (for memory) was that re-triggering the same pattern didn't make the pattern re-start from the beginning. It would be great if it did.
I like to use it with slow rates and gate loops in segments. The 1bar step rate means you can have a 32 bar sequence in one window in one pattern which was ideal for triggering loops over multiple bars etc
Thanks for sharing. I noticed while reading the manual today that there was definitely some kind of way you could set a pattern to always start from the beginning.
I'm a bit unclear how one cc message can trigger different patterns or how you choose which one could be triggered. Can u elaborate? Also, it seems to have a song mode where you can set up how many times a pattern repeats before moving to the next. Would that accomplish what you were doing with the Mozaic script?
This paragraph I am a bit unclear what you mean. Could you maybe clarify? I think u r saying you had one pattern playing slowly which you used to trigger other faster patterns, is that right? Thanks again
As a non expert , I just like the way the sick subdivisions are laid out. Mad rap hi hats applied to non trap music basically. Hails mate I should read the manual myself.
@oceansinspace by 'subdivisions' do u mean the way notes can be ratcheted? Yeah, really nice implementation of that!
StepPolyArp Unit is one of the very few apps that can do ratcheting(Step Division) with optional velocity ramp and 'acceleration'.
It's also quite easy to chain patterns in the sequencer mode if/when needed.
Combine StepPolyArp Unit with QuantiChord from the same developer for hours of fun
(Ie. feed StepPolyArp with notes from QuantiChord).
It's total mayhem when changing the length of the pattern for each of the note lanes.
With 'fixed' note values it's also a pretty good 'drum sequencer'.
Sometimes I do wonder why I keep getting new arpeggiator apps and stuff when StepPolyArp is still without any serious competition...
Yes @Samu, those are all great features, though I haven't used it on drums yet. Velocity ramps for ratcheting, chaining, varying pattern lengths, all absolutely brilliant.
There's one preset called 'Analog Drums' point it at any drum app (BS-16i etc.) that has a GM mapping and you should be fine.
(There's nothing special about the preset, it just uses fixed note values for the lanes).
Arpeggionome Pro by Alexandernaut is practically a sequencer and it’s brill.
I do wish Arpeggist by Virsyn didn’t crash so much when it’s hosted because it’s a lot of f*cking fun
Arpist bu IO LABS is comparatively ancient and hasn’t been updated in 4 years but still is a little workhorse on the phone.
@Gavinski this menu is hidden to most who dabble with this app
Good thread idea. I need to use this app more. It’s so deep and powerful.
That’s pretty cool idea.
Agreed.
Arpeggionone Pro is pretty unique and fun to use, it’s a great controller for live playing/jamming, but you can easily record the midi in Atom 1/2. it might still be on sale at $4.99, which is 50% off, it was for awhile.
I never purchased Arpist, but was always interested in it, waiting for the app to hopefully get an update.
I like step poly arp, but I always felt like it could do more if I could just wrap my head around it.
Yes! Luckily I am aware of this menu, having actually read the manual 😂
I'll second what you said about Arpeggist - I contacted Harry from Virsyn about some problems the app had, let's hope for an update. Arpeggionome Pro I definitely need to look at again.
@Gavinski
Song mode or chaining patterns is good for a song yes, but I think it's useful to toggle between song mode and locked to a pattern when jamming and writing.
In the standalone version there is a setting
retrig position when launching
which is not in the AUV3 version from what I can see. It happens by default except when re-triggering the same pattern. In settings you can set
Receive CC messages
,Instantaneous Pattern Change
Sending CC15 values 0-15 will trigger a pattern 1-15. (See manual recognized midi controls)
Triggering a new pattern (via CC message) will make the new pattern start from the beginning.
However, Re-triggering the same pattern does nothing. I'd like it to re-trigger from the beginning.
Why? Because I want to use different midi generators and I want to be able to synchronise (across all midi generators) which pattern they are playing whether it be in a song mode or jumping from scene to scene (pattern to pattern) or re-triggering the same scene (pattern), especially when using long patterns as I was. Re-triggering same pattern should do the same as re-triggering a new pattern. ie start from beginning imo.
FWIW My attempt at a solution for scene/pattern synchronisation is Scene Master https://patchstorage.com/scene-master/ I use it to update scenes/patterns on all midi generators. So, if i use Drambo, LK, or multiple SPA 's I could use scene master to synchronise manual (user) scene changes on the next bar in playback (and lock to new scene/pattern), or change instantly when host is stopped, or in song mode play through all scenes to the set duration. To make it work with SPA change line37 to
send_cc21_for_spa=TRUE
.In this image below the step rate is set to 1 bar. So the whole pattern is 32bars long. It looks a little bit more like a traditional DAW sequencer view. I used the long notes to gate on loops. While the note is down the loop plays. So, in this way it was easy to have a range of loops and trigger them at different points in a 32 bar scene for long periods of time. Eg: Let's say you want to have a fill in the last bar or a riser in the last 8 bars and a drone play continuously for 32 bars. With this setup not only is it easy to do, but it's visually so clear.
This looka very interesting, and thanks for taking the time. I think I'm going to have to read it a handful of times before I grasp it all, I am not on the level of midi mastery that you 'zaic heads are, for sure. Did you write to Laurent the dev asking for this retrig behaviour you would like to see? He seems very responsive and is open to improving the app by the sound of things.
@Gavinski I haven't no. How do you get in touch with him?
Leave a pot of red tulips on the balcony
@Gavinski ah actually, I have ... about a timing issue, so I do have an email.
interesting method! I might not get the response I am after though!
Yes, this. I realized this recently and have been enjoying a deep dive into SPA. It’s deep and rock solid!
Cool, yeah definitely worth emailing him
Yeah, and seriously one of the cleverest interface designs ever on iOS. I have a feeling Blueveek was definitely highly inspired by this for his Atom design.
@Gavinski I like using SPA to create semi-random basslines by combining different note modes. I don't want completely random, nor do I want the same sequence every time. So I do something like the following ...
... and so much easier to move notes around the interface now I have my Zagg Pro iPad pencil
Very nice
Actually, I don't know if u understand you correctly. From the screenshot I got the impression that you are somehow randonizing just those two notes. Can u explain how to do that? I don't see a way
Ah, I guess you make two instances, right? Set notes in one to a regular arp pattern and the other to random? Cool, good idea
Uh oh, back to the manual. What are you doing here?
That's it - the only two notes which are randomised are the two circled notes. And make sure the random mode is selected in the top right.
The others - 1,2,3,4 - are playing the lowest, second lowest, third and fourth lowest notes. Those numbered ones are not randomised - it will always play that numbered note on that step. So the above sequence will play:
Lowest Note > 2nd Lowest note > 3rd lowest note > RANDOM NOTE > 2nd lowest > 3rd lowest > RANDOM NOTE > 4th lowest.
Try it and see - it definitely works! Just tried it with 1 1 1 > and a 4 note chord to check. I'm getting 1 1 1 RANDOM 1 1 1 RANDOM 111 RANDOM etc.
And Scale should be set to Chromatic.
If it's still not making sense let me know and I can do a video screengrab.
I've been making Bach-like preludes with it - sounds quite authentic!
No just the one instance, as shown above. Unless I'm misunderstanding?
Yes.... I’m confused
If my post above doesn’t clarify what’s going on, I could do a screen recording of me setting it up.
