Just tried it. I absolutely love it.
It can do so much: eq, compression, limiting, saturation, transient shaping ... but in a very focused manner, with “beef” in focus. It’s just perfect a on drum bus but I’m sure it’ll enhance whatever you put on. I’m a fan of Tape Pro, and totally sold on this one. My concern is that something happens with the beta, cos this is gonna be happily over used.
I do have an issue with it, rather important one. The level increases considerably when using it, specially as you crank the saturation. It needs a “gain” control at the end of the chain to properly A/B and keep the volume steady. Borrowing the “auto gain” feature from Tape Pro would be awesome.
    Great, great job.

Glad you like it. You should be able to use the gain knob in the limiter to bring the levels down - is this what you mean? An auto-gain feature could be possible too however, we shall look into it. Beta isn't going anywhere, we have a set release date in mind which is before the end of the TestFlight beta period - however we don't want to say the date yet just in case someone pops up with a game changing bug in the last week of testing etc. Thanks for the feedback!

  • Love it, exactly the kind of effect I love to use on drums!!

@CaelumAudio Do you think it’s possible to set presets mode UI default option? I tend to like to start with basic one knob view and tweak all knobs only after basic presets mix
    Knob exploration.

  • When I place beef after an AU in AUM it only process the left channel? No one else have this issue?
    Works fine in drambo?

  • Might want to call it “AudioBeef” or something so people don’t get confused on the App Store. You might get a bunch of people who like to eat meat buying it by mistake. :)

@CaelumAudio this is a great app, and BEEF is the perfect name(and app icon!)
I apologize for derailing this thread a little, shouldn’t have happened to this great app. How much will this app cost???
Please don’t say an Arm & a Leg.

Hi!. The limiter is not really working for me to bring the level down. I might be missing something, but a master output knob would be great.

    Hi All!

We have just released an update to the Beta. We wanted to fix any issues in this one before we look at potentially adding anything. Anyway, here is the change-log:

    Beef 1.0.0 (2) changes:
    - Hopefully fixed some odd channel issues in some hosts (turning the mix knob up would turn 1 or both channels silent).
    - Pushed the save and bin buttons further away from preset selection.
    - Top bar buttons try to be a little bigger on smaller UI sizes.
    - The preset menu has a more sensible minimum size so will display at a useable size even when the UI is scaled down.
    - Metering fixed for mono audio channels.
    - Small bit of optimisation.

Wonderful! We could look at making it open by default to the last mode you used in the app/auv3 (this wouldn't have to be from the same instance)? - would that be beneficial?

When you pull the limiter gain right down is it still being pushed really hard? We could easily make it so that that gain dial goes down to -35dB which would be a manual counter any gain in the saturation? Not discounting looking at auto gain though.

We also had reports of AUM saving not working. This update may have fixed this as well - we're not currently able to reproduce this. If you had this problem then please check it out.

That might work. The saturation really increases the volume.
But I’d still prefer a dedicated gain knob, with “utogain” as a plus. In mi mind a limiter is a limiter, should not be responsible for gain control, unless it’s (duh) limiting. You might still want the real hard limiting effect but alter the volume after.

  • Just want to say the Saturation algorithms all sound great :) (that Tube is punishing!)

  • I haven't tried it yet on a full mix but I did try my electric bass through it.
    It has a nice tone.
It can be subtle and it can also be used quite heavily.

Looking forward to testing it on a full mix.

Defo echo the request for a final stage level control post limiter

So in another thread I was looking for a best app for a new Bass Guitar I just got yesterday. BEEF works very well for Bass Guitar using the aptly named “Cow Professor “ preset. I love this app! I haven’t had this much fun since Bebot was a baby.

  • Love it. Great job C A.

  • Hi All,

Made a couple of changes to the beta since the page was last updated - didn't want to bump it too much. However there is a big change now with a output gain control!

    Beef 1.0.0 (4) changes:
    - Output gain moved to a better position.
    - Couple of minor bug fixes.

    Beef 1.0.0 (3) changes:
    - Added an output volume slider over the waveform view.
    - Fixed an issue where UI elements would load incorrectly if multiple instances were loaded and one is removed.

There still looks to be an occasional issue with crashing for some people but no one is getting in contact except for a couple of anonymous reports via TestFlight. I suspect it could be a RAM issue but if you are facing any crash issues then please get in contact directly (either on this thread, via private message or via email).

    Thanks,
    David

  • Absolutely love the sound. For me I like it in parallel on the kick  Next is to experiment on synth and bass sounds. I second moving the delete icon. The arrows for changing presets could be bigger, same like the other apps. Resizing would be great. Will definitely get it when released and funds available.
One more thing. I have no clue, but do real time graphics make a dent on the memory/processor/dsp? Only when viewing? Or also when in the background? What I mean to say is, if it does, perhaps an option to turn of visitation of the scope and volume bars.
Picture to show there is a lot of space for scaling, at least in Drambo.

  • Only had a quick play with this on the output of Pure Acid but wow, sounds incredible 👌 love the noise/rate modulation at high Q for an extra bit of spice. Everything sounds amazing, fat and dirty but still tight. Can’t wait to use this more! Thanks!

The realtime graphics only use cpu when the window is open provided the host is deleting the UI correctly. However, it probably will be a good plan to give the option to turn it off. Yes, we need to have a look at using the space when the window is sized fullscreen like that - we will probably look at putting the modules on 2 layers so that things can be a little bigger.

No problem, glad you're enjoying it!

    New update earlier today:
    Beef 1.0.0 (5) changes:
    - Smoothing control in the crush section.
    - Some resources now shared between instances to save RAM and to decrease loading times of subsequent instances.

Thanks for everyone's feedback so far!

    David

  • Look fwd for it! Any release date?

  • What does the rate modulation do exactly?.
I got to try this on bass after reading some comments here, I know I’m gonna love it in parallel.

The rate modulation rapidly changes the playback speed using filtered white noise. The effect this has is to add noisy grit to the signal. Because it's not a layer of noise on top of the sound the noise becomes a part of the sound rather than an extra layer.

    Planning for April 30th!

Seeing as this post has been bumped today I will add the latest release notes:
    Beef 1.0.0 (7) changes:
    - Fixed a crash when closing the app.
    - Fixed a potential crash with a filter.
    - Fixed GarageBand having no audio.
    - Larger preset menu and buttons.
    - Corrected the signal chain of the new "Smoothing" control.
    - The limiter gain dial now only applies gain if the limiter is enabled.

    David

  • Loving this

@CaelumAudio - don't know if this has been mentioned before but state saving in AUM sessions doesn't seem to be working for me. Any instances of Beef that I've saved with a preset in a session revert to 'default' when I reload that session. Otherwise, loving this effect - thanks. 👍
