Was there another director like Carpenter who also scored the movies they directed?

Shane Carruth. Upstream Color has been mentioned – and gets bonus points for having a subplot centred on sample-based composition – but Primer also has a pretty great soundtrack. He also scored the first season of The Girlfriend Experience before things between him and Amy Seimetz got horrifying.

  • Mr. Robot and Utopia if we’re not strictly talking about movie soundtracks.

  • Stranger things
    Solaris (soderbergh version)
    Enter the Void
    Newest Bladerunner

  • One of my favourites - technically it’s a remix album of the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack - but it fits here I think

Thank you. Another thing I learned.

  • Giorgio Moroder won three Oscars in order to be included in this thread :) Two for individual songs, in Flashdance and Top Gun, and one for the whole soundtrack of Midnight Express.

  • Some of Tangerine Dream's best work appeared in soundtracks. E.g.,

  • I remember this from Street Hawk (TV), also by Tangerine Dream...

  • Airwolf

  • Vangelis has quite a few.
    Probably best known are:

    Chariots of Fire
    Antarctica - documentary
    Blade Runner
    1492: Conquest of Paradise

Nearly all the good ones have been mentioned already.

Kurt Stenzel's soundtrack for the documentary 'Jodorowsky's Dune' is worth a listen.

    Also worth a watch, imho.

Wow, thank you. This could almost be attempted on an ipad today! (Not by me mind you.)

  • So many films here I love or on my lists. Who’d have thought this would be a popular thread in an electronic musician forum. Come full circle from la planete sauvage ——- jodorowsky via bande dessinee

  • Under The Skin. One of my favourite films ever and an astonishing soundtrack

  • @Halftone holy crap. One of my top movies and soundtracks. Can’t believe I have never seen this before. Brilliant!!!!

  • It Follows OST by Disasterpeace (creative powerhouse with an extensive catalog)

I find it funny how some artists will make an cinematic sounding album and label it a soundtrack (even though its not) - there’s a lot of this in the synthwave genre in particular. I noticed that the amazeballs ambient duo Carbon Based Lifeforms even did this with their Refuge ‘soundtrack’... I went hunting for the movie and couldn’t find it. Maybe it exists, maybe it doesn’t. Great soundtrack though ;)

Hanna soundtrack is done by The Chemical Brothers. It's really great.

    The Subway Scene:

  • Tron: Legacy OST from Daft Punk as originally mentioned by @mjcouche . The blend between orchestra and electronics is so exquisite. The original Tron soundtrack is also pretty decent too, but Daft Punk's is a step above.

The whole movie is very unsettling. Some of the most nightmarish stuff I’ve ever seen in a movie.

By the way, I have another movie which isn’t an obscure one, but I really loved what Mark Mothersbaugh did on the soundtrack for Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok”.

I should rewatch with a ear to the soundtrack ... I loved his quirky little electronic pieces for The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou

A totally brilliant movie on every level, the only one directed by the great movie graphic designer Saul Bass, a flop on initial release, hard to find on DVD, reborn now as a cult movie, this from the Wikipedia entry about the electronic soundtrack:

“Brian Gascoigne was the chief composer and Stomu Yamashta was responsible for the music in the final montage sequence, which was cut from the theatrical release. David Vorhaus and Desmond Briscoe composed the electronic music. Waxwork Records released the soundtrack on vinyl in March 2015. It does not include the cut final sequence montage music by Stomu Yamashta. It was the first release of the soundtrack in any format.”

Stomo Yamashta was one of my early electronic heroes.

Absolutely fantastic. Saw it as a kid, didn't understand why everyone was not all over the moon about it. :) OTOH I would now think twice before rewatching it and maybe ruining the memory...

    Electric Dreams...

This one also offers a good example of what you (well, some people anyway) can now do on an ipad:

@bennorland : yes, and yes! A film that really lingers in the mind. Which prompted me to recall another alien sex movie with an electronic soundtrack (later apparently claimed as a seminal influence on the electroclash genre) I saw a long time ago:

Liquid Sky, ‘the most successful independent movie of 1983’. (The whole movie is on YouTube too, if this trailer doesn’t put you off entirely. It’s a bit... strange.)

From the Wikipedia entry on Liquid Sky’s Fairlight based soundtrack:

“To create unusual sounds by manipulating real-world sounds, director Slava Tsukerman chose to use a synthesizer known as the Fairlight CMI. Brenda Hutchinson and Clive Smith were the music composers for the soundtrack.[15] During the process, Tsukerman brought over three or four classical music pieces that would be programmed into the Fairlight CMI... When composing, Tsukerman would tap a rhythm or hum a melody, and Hutchinson and Smith would play around with ideas on the Fairlight. Percussion sounds were used throughout the movie. Tsukerman often rejected re-recording a tape when not perfect, loving the rawness of the imperfections. He was quoted as saying “No, I like it. Let’s make it quick and dirty.” During foley and sound design, materials such as wind chimes, metal, glass, and wood were used to create the sounds of the alien creatures. While composing, Smith never saw a visual from the film. He did not see his work integrated with the visuals until the premiere. He created music and sound solely from what Tsukerman communicated to him. He said that he and Hutchinson were the composers, but that Tsukerman had the vision.”

Not at all. It’s on my “must watch” list now

Climax is a must if you’re into Gaspar Noe movies...(just sick) btw...it’s inspired from a true story btw

The great thing about Cerrone is that he's been making essentially the exact same music ever since his glory days decades ago :)

  • The Knick - Series. Amazing BSO by Cliff Martinez.

The Life Aquatic is another favorite of mine. Very inventive and has the kind of wry humor I love.
