I love blind tests! Read AB all the time but don't post much, had to find my login so I could weigh in.
I don't do much piano'ing myself, but there were definitely some standouts and a couple of duds. My favorites were probably 5, 6, and 7. I guess to me, those were the most convincing and or fun to listen to. Unfortunately the poll only allowed me to select one choice, but it'll be interesting to see the results after some more votes come in. Curious to know which apps produced my favorite sounds in the event I decide I need to buy a piano app at some point (probably could do without but a good sale can be hard to pass up, yeah?).
The poll seems to only let me vote for one at a time.
I’d boot 1, 5, 7 and 11.
Of course I’m quite curious about their identities.
Ah, just saw your addendum!
I’ll listen again and vote for one of them.
No. That's good... everyone can comment with their bottom 4.
So, far:
1
2
5
7
11
are candidates...
I rarely meet a piano I don't like... to me they are like guitars. They aren't bad... just different
in various ways. But I like to know what the group mind values... and hopefully "Why?".
But it's good to just follow the clues.
After dropping some I'll try another set of A/B recordings and maybe seek to equalize the
reverb situation to avoid throwing out the great but "dry" instruments. I'll just add enough to
let the tone, pitch and release be the determining factors.
There's some generally bad pianos in this batch that should just fall out but the reverb
issue could make us drop a real contender.
Differences in EQ are fair because that's what people tend to value: bright to cut through or
dark to be emotive.
@Linearline judges his pianos based on their ability to sustain the illusion he's sitting down at a real instrument. The rest of us tend to compare it to favorite recordings... big difference
in those 2 sets of criteria.
Feel free to articulate the differences you think are relevant to sway the crowd. This should be interactive and hopefully we can agree on most of the choices made.
Just list 2-4 that you don't like... I'm going to expose the names as the next step and
then use a better MIDI file to proceed, removing several of the entries mostly because they
cost more than they are worth or they cost very little but take up too much space or the
software used to make them dance is a royal pain.
Speaking of Royal Pain... I'm downloading the Colossus $49 piano and it takes hours and if it
fails for any reason... it start over. My iPad is off limits until it finishes and I may get storage errors because it's 12GB in size. Royal pain.
Reading the other thread, I've got a line on some really primo MIDI. I want something that
displays the better qualities of the better apps and is about 10 seconds long.
OK... here are the pianos I used for the audio files.
People commented negatively on 1,2,5,7,11.
Number 2 is a surprise. I think it's just a dry sound and in future I'll give it a touch of reverb but not stop using it in future trials.

All these apps's are universal by the way.
Module D is a fine emulation. Too few votes to be relevant. One thing for sure... folks like Pure Piano.
I don’t like 1, 5, 11
I voted for 1 but then could not vote again for the 2 others.
My preferred ones are 2 and 7 but, to be sure, I need a short list with another midi file and sustain pedal to juge resonance qualities.
And I precise I have not unveiled the names of the apps yet...
... which I will do in a few minutes.
I hope I will not discard my favorite ones 🤞😅
Yes do add iGrand to mix. It was neglected in the last iteration and presents a natural tone when recorded. P11 Colossus Grand B is a fine piano which is disadvantaged here due it’s short release and the lack of pedal in the midi. I’d keep it in.
OK. I have added a mystery piano as P12.
Is Salamander #9? I wish Pure Piano had string resonance. Maybe @modosc will consider adding as well as pedal noise control.
I'm not going to throw much out. I'm shopping for some MIDI snippets. Short segments
that illustrate an extreme: extra soft, massive but slow chords, lively with a lot of nuance.
I edited the 1st comment and have added the SPOILER list there for a peek. There are now 12 pianos represented.
You're @ing the wrong dev there Lineman!
3,10,12 were the ones I liked the most. Fun post.
Boot 2,8,9,11
hah, but i am working on pedal support in id700.
@Gavinski... damn! I can’t keep track with this ancient brain. 🧠🤯😂 @modosc, sorry, I did use ID700 with Pure Piano on my latest track if that counts for anything. Maybe you can let e-instruments know my wish list?😉💔
While you are here, maybe you should consider adding sympathetic string resonance also in ID700 ?
Okay, I leave ... 😉
Thanks for the bump.
I asked @LinearLineman for a MIDI sample and then selected his tasteful ending with a beautiful set of chords and very low bass notes. Check for clarity in the low end and in the
chords.

Ouch, I thought you were going to boil down the list to 4-5 contenders...
Will not be easy again for me
But, well, let's go !
2, 4, 5, 6, 9 are better than the others (to my ears!)
Could I ask you to rank them - best to least favored? Ties are allowed.
Okay, I have not unveiled the names of the apps yet but here is my ranking :
Let's now see the names...
Wow this is getting serious
So my result gives :
Very happy with that !
@Paulo164, you seem to have perfect piano ears.... well, ears and nose do keep growing as we age. Mine are not quite as big as a piano... yet.
😉
