Geoff Barrow (Portishead) on DM1 app
Big Portishead fan here - I follow band member Geoff Barrow on twitter and just noticed he tweeted this - which I though was pretty cool..
Comments
One of my fav sample fodder makers.
Love Portishead too, but Geoff should try all the new drum machines that have come out over the 2 two years.
That's really cool. I absolutely love Portishead and I'm quite partial to a bit of Beak too.
I've often wondered what would happen with some of my favourite 'electronic' artists if they did a song or album exclusively on iOS (maybe with a budget audio interface and mic).
Goldfrapp on Cubasis, Depeche Mode with Audio Evolution, top EDM artist with AUM etc. Would make a great YouTube series I think.
The synthesis version, DM2, is pretty cool too:

Yes, I have that version (although I believe it’s by a different developer), and it’s pretty good for tweaking electronic drum sounds.
Shame it’s not an AUv3 though.
Was such a tease for me. The midi features really fell short.
Wonder if it has had an update on the midi side. AUv3 automation would make it one of the best in class imhofy
Yep, it would really get a lot more use from me if it got those updates.
Description says “same core team behind DM1”
I concur! I actually like the interface. Very easy to navigate and tweak parameters. I hope we get a surprise AUV3 update one day 🙏🏻
Yes, but if I remember correctly, one of the guys involved in DM1 early on left the team and started working on his own app, which ended up being the second of the two apps to hit the market.
Trying to remember where I heard that, and now that I think about it, I think it was Doug on one of his Soundtestroom videos.
Wow! Interesting... and it seems like both apps have been abandoned. Both should have been AUV3 by now!
It’s probably like some other devs have said - they no longer make enough money from the app to justify the hours to redevelop as an AUv3. I would gladly pay for it again if it got an update though.
Me too!
Neither is “abandoned”. Looking forward to finding out what “stay tuned” is referring to.
😳
Same here there’s something crunchy good about the kits
Pascal (developer of DM2) is quite responsive and a great guy. Last update was a few weeks ago. The drone machine issue has not been resolved though.
Nice. Love the band and the app. Wish their apps had a way to loop song mode sections.
There’s a new DM1 with AU coming. Saw a twitter post on here somewhere in the last few days.
And I agree, it’s still after all these years the best drum sequencer. I like the Patterning interface and ui more, and of course I like using my own samples, so that alone makes Patterning my go to, but sequencing the patterns for a complete track has never been topped by this. Which is a shame.
You can use your own samples in DM1.
Interesting! Patterning came along and wooed me away with its looks, and the sample browser is great once you’ve gotten everything in there, especially now with the ability to do folders. Does this require a computer to load and how is the file browser for going through thousands of samples? Is there audition while playing/selecting.
I realize I could find this all out myself, but you can probably tell me much more quickly.
This is a function for creating kits from files stored elsewhere or by mic input. There is no sample storage function except in the context of kits. Keep in mind this was created when importing/exporting files from iTunes was a thing.
As it stands now I would use mic input (there is a simple trim function) or preview and select up to 9 files for a kit (say from Dropbox or iCloud) and drop them into AudioShare and then import into each slot.
It’s pretty simple actually and doesn’t take a lot of time since (at least in my case) I’m only building a kit or two on an as-needed basis and honestly I’m more likely to build my own kits in Slate in NS2. I was merely addressing the fact that it seemed you didn’t realize that you actually can import your own files into DM1.
They say they are working on an update so I imagine file handling will, or should be, part of that.
Totally. And agreed on using NS2 for kits...I hate it never got audio tracks/separate audio outs/separate au fx slots per instrument because its file library/ sharing system is the best implementation on iOS ever since Audioshare came along.
(Fingers crossed you will now tell me it has all those things.)
I like the synthesis aspects, I just wish it supported velocity. It really limits what you can do with it.
I loved DM1 back in the day. Such a great intuitive interface. Haven't touched it in years though.
Looks like BEAK> made a kit for the app some years back https://thequietus.com/articles/14726-beak-dm1-drum-machine-app-competition
I really love the FX. i hope that their DFX (no longer on the app store, but still downloadable it seems) makes a comeback in AU form or if they at least do AU DM1 that it can be loaded as an AUfx!
Really love this one....

I’ve tried almost every DAW on iOS and I always end up back in NS2 in spite of no audio tracks (sorry!). Beyond using Slate as a drum machine, I use it for audio clip triggering as well. I fought it for a while, trying to use other DAWs but when I went back to NS2 I started getting things done without roadblocks popping up all the time. I’ve done entire songs without ever stopping playback. That’s when I know I’ve got something! 😎👍🏼
Yes the FX, what a cool way to interface w/em. ED did it too later on
