I have a really dumb question about YouTube missing comments
I never log into YouTube (I am not a fan of surveillance capitalism) and yet I have always been able to read the comments until about the last 12 + months, when they simply disappeared with no explanation. I have Googled extensively but I cannot find out what has changed nor what to do about it, and it does not seem to make any difference which computer or web browser I try.
What am I missing (outside of the obvious that comments are not longer visible)?
Comments
Are you using any ad-blockers?
Try expanding the window width in your browser.
Hi yug,
I am not using any ad-blocking functionality that would not be native to either Firefox or Chrome or Edge, as far as I can tell. Not only have I have tried this with the three aforementioned browsers but I have tried it on my three Windows home laptops. Everything acts the same with respect to the missing YouTube comments, and outside 0f that one quirk everything functions perfectly normal with all three browsers and all three Windows laptops.
I have not tried YouTube on any of my iOS machines or any of my macOS machines. That seems rather overkill for what should be a simple solution and in any case it would not solve the problem, right?
Hi GRiker,
If you mean to say "ensure that YouTube is running in Windows full-screen mode" I have done this many times with no change. Have a look-see at my response to yug for further clarification on things I've tried. It's all a bit embarrassing because I like to think I know a bit about Windows given I’ve been using it since the 1980’s (likely before some of ya’ll were born).
I guess it shows to go you that age before beauty is not the best course of action for YouTube diagnostics.
What happens if you do log in, just as a test?
That would probably be my recommendation too
I have no idea uncledave & michael_m, I do not have an account and I'm disinclined to get one due to Surveillance Capitalism. Also I used to be able to see the YouTube comments for years until about the last 12+ months, also all three browsers and all three Windows machines act identically as per this one glitch.
FYI: on all three machines I run CCleaner, Malwarebytes and Windows Security. I've also checked Windows Startup and Windows Add/Remove and everything is always just fine.
I have not changed anything, I do not take extraordinary security measures, I do not have any viruses, I do not run any unusual applications, everything works perfectly on all three machines and all three browsers, as far as I can tell anyway.
Like I said about the YouTube comments, they just stopped about 12+ months ago on all three machines and all three browsers. It must be something that is so obvious as to be overlooked, no?
Oh that's weird, on one of my Windows laptops the comments do show, but on other two they do not. What the hell? Here is the link I used for testing purposes. I see the Fleetwood Mac merchandise but then no more on two of my machines, I see that plus the comments on the third laptop. Why the hell did I choose that goat-singer?
The reason i suggested checking the width - in macOS Safari, I’ve noticed that a narrow window width prevents comments from showing. FWIW, I am logged in, so maybe that’s the difference.
I can see comments without being logged in.
If you mean by "narrow window width" making sure Windows is in full-screen mode when running YouTube then I have done this many times with no change. Interestingly one of my Windows machines does show comments now and the other two not so perhaps it is some sort of ad-blocker, but I cannot figure out what it might be yet.
I have no views on my iOS machines nor my MacOS machines, I've not tried them and I see no point in doing so.
When I view the You Tube mobile site in the iCabMobile browser on my iPad, I see "409 comments" at the bottom of the page, with an up/down arrow pair alongside. Tapping that opens a sidebar with the comments. I am not logged in. Maybe you're seeing something similar.
Maybe try clearing all your cookies. Google searching does funny things that make results appear and then disappear, which is something cookie-related and can be straightened out that way. Since YT is now a Google thing, maybe it’s something like that.
Now this is weird! I see one of the following by scrolling to the bottom of any YouTube:
Restricted Mode has hidden comments for this video
Comments are turned off
There's lots of web info on this. Sounds like someone thinks you're a child; could be your computer, your browser, your network, or YouTube itself.
Yesterday my wife had issues playing videos as they were restricted so she filled out the birthday section (of course with fake data) on her gmail account and boom, they all play now.
Maybe some regions in the world now apply this to the comments section?
Are you using private browsing ("incognito") or a VPN? Are you behind a proxy or gateway, maybe in a company, school, or college?
Hi uncledave & friends,
I am not logged into YouTube or Google or any other online presence in any way, this is simply my home WiFi network. No VPN, no special security measures, no proprietary settings or configurations. On all three machines I run CCleaner, Malwarebytes and Windows Security so no cookies etc. are ever stored. No proxy servers, no school server, no company server, etc.
I cannot see how YouTube or Google or any other online presence could maintain an accurate record of who I am. I could be wrong though, and maybe I should ask my ISP to change my Hostname / IP address or reset my router or whatever.
I have always been able to read the comments until about the last 12 + months, when they simply disappeared with no explanation and I have not added or changed my hardware or software in any meaningful way.
I never scrolled to the bottom of a YouTube (past all the suggested links for other YouTubes) until now. I must assume those notifications have always been there (since the problem started) but I simply never noticed:
Restricted Mode has hidden comments for this video
Comments are turned off
To clarify: one of my laptops always displays comments (I thought it was all three but I rarely use the third laptop) the other two do not, or very rarely.
However, yesterday I did notice (I’ll have to confirm for sure today) that if I first play a YouTube on the one laptop that seems to have no problems showing comments, and then subsequently play the exact same YouTube on the two laptops that won’t show comments, then the two laptops that won’t show comments, will show comments (at least for some period of time).
I did some preliminary Googling as per:
Restricted Mode has hidden comments for this video
Comments are turned off
But I can’t find anything yet specific to my problem.
I would just try making a totally fake gmail account with no real info about you and fill out the birthdate at 50+ years old then see what happens.
I am also curious what region you are in (if you feel comfortable saying).
British Columbia Canada. To your point about a fake Gmail account. How could Google even know who I am? I always clean up as best I can (CCleaner, Malwarebytes and Windows Security) so no cookies etc. are ever stored. Also one of my laptops does and the other two do not, except perhaps as mentioned.

I am only testing using that one Fleetwood Mac YouTube (I must like singers that sound like sheep). I just tested it with one of the two laptops that does not show comments (at least not usually as discussed) and in fact it is showing comments, at least with this YouTube at this time.
Also, there is no text at the bottom saying:
Restricted Mode has hidden comments for this video
Comments are turned off
Oh hey neighbour, me too!
Could be your IP or something. If you access youtube from a certain location on x machines with x OSes I bet they have some vague profile of an X user.
You really don’t want to just try a fake account?
Oh sure I can do as you suggest but I’d rather find a way around the whole problem. Surveillance Capitalism is getting way too creepy if your assumptions are correct.
I suppose should start using duckduckgo. Which reminds me, I do have a rarely used YouTube account and similarly a rarely used Gmail account (I forgot about them), but again I would think running CCleaner, Malwarebytes and Windows Security would stop tracking.
For the reason mentioned, and a losing battle though it may be, my objective is not to give Google and Apple and Facebook, and Twitter, etc more data to work with, but to do the exact reverse via data anonymization.
Remember that, if they're invoking Restricted Mode, they're protecting themselves by protecting you. They don't need angry parents, or regulators, coming after them for offending kids. Somehow, they've got the idea that two of your computers are used by children, or maybe they're just playing it safe.
What changed about a year ago, is that Google had to re-jigger their infrastructure to keep some content and comments away from kids. At that time, when uploading one started having to mark whether the content was intended for kids. Such content has has limitations on it (commenting isn’t allowed on such content). When those changes went into effect, they probably had ripple effects — one of which is that may default as @uncledave said to the most restrictive mode.
Are you signed into GMail? btw, Google owns YouTube. One unified login...
Did you leave CCleaner at its defaults?
If you're especially concerned about Surveillance Capitalism, you should get a VPN.
espiegel123 & uncledave, ah well, that explains it, things changed about a year ago, and I've been caught in the crossfire of a BS response, that attempts to give the impression of good corporate citizenship. The media and the internet itself should be owned and controlled by the people. It should not be controlled by a few multi-trillion dollar for-profit monopolies, run by a tiny group of billionaire oligarchs, claiming to protect our children.
These multi-trillion dollar for-profit media monopolies do not give a shit about our children, they only care about making a good impression and maximizing their power and wealth.
Break up Big Tech!
I'm going for some kibble and a snooze.
First question: Am I signed into GMail? No, only for the short time I use it, and then I wipe all cookies etc. so in theory at least, Gmail has no ongoing access to my computers.
Second question: Do I know that Google owns YouTube? Yes I know that and it's one of the reasons I never sign into YouTube, and why I'm likely to switch to duckduckgo.
Third question: Do I leave CCleaner at its defaults? No I do not and I limit its functionality to cookie removal and the like and I am aware that CCleaner has expanded beyond its basic intent and there may be better choices now.
Fourth question: Do I know about VPN's? Yes I do and it's on my list of things to investigate further and/or enable, if indeed I can truly count on a VPN being effective as per increased privacy versus additional cost. There are controversies on this point, alas.
Fifth question: Am I especially concerned about Surveillance Capitalism? Nope. No more than everyone should be very concerned about Surveillance Capitalism. Everyone should petition the government to break up Big Tech and make the internet a democratic, socialized, non-profit service, like water or power or roads, or street lights.
YouTube will do that as well for the opposite reason - if someone has made too many controversial comments. So will a network admin or ISP.
And to the OP, CCleaner, Malwarebytes and Windows Security do absolutely nothing to protect you from Surveillance Capitalism.
