Handpan options 2021
So Handpan fans... what’s the best au option for this? I’ve looked through beathawk iaps, audio layer, chameleon, digistix, bs-16 etc. So far coming up short 🤷♂️
Comments
I’ve done a bunch of sampling handpans off of youtube into koala and then into ReSlice. While I’m purposely trying not to maintain the performance aspects of the samples, I’ve been able to slice up the hits I’d like to use.
Was hoping someone had made an iap to save me DIY’ing, but I might have a go at making an audiolayer patch
Drum jam has a few hang drums that are great. Thumb jam May have some as well but I don’t remember. There’s also many apps not specifically aimed at music that have tongue drums or other pans that you can play and I think they sound good, you could play those and try to sample.
there's also oval synth... not AU but IAA, but it has a handpan key-layout
Not exactly handpan, but there is an tongue drum available on pianobook in decent sampler format. I haven't tried it yet but it is free so definitely worth checking. There are plenty of nice sounding instruments there.

Thanks for the suggestions.
The patches on oval synth are lovely! (Insert obligatory ‘shame it’s not au’ comment)
I can definitely look at sampling that.
This was made for some disappointing hardware I gather?
Sounds different but great in its own way and I’ve just imported it fairly easily to audiolayer. Thanks!
I’ve never tried these apps or drum perfect. They break my ‘not au’ rule but maybe worth making an exception.
I used to jam with a friend who plays on 2 handpans.
My opinion is that Drumjam’s handpan sounds very similar to the real instrument.
and i feel like just having the handpan-like buttons arranged in that way already kind of inspires different melodies than playing on a keyboard
Thanks for the reminder to sample Oval into AudioLayer. It really does sound great!
If you haven't tried DrumPerfectPro's pack with handpans, wow you really should. Listen below (more on soundcloud) first as they or the app are not exactly free
Did a tune with them myself but I'm not gonna list that here
Just double checked and you do say AU, well the main app IAA but there is a loader/player usable as an AU. Best realistic sounding drums on iOS.
Here's another short track made with DrumPerfect Pro Handpan pack.![]
DPP come as in two forms. Main IAA editor/composer and Auv3 player supporting multi outs. Just choose the song you wish to play in the presets.
Important to know that you can keep the main IAA in 1 channel ( i.e in AUM ) if you wish to edit/modify the song that is played in the Auv3 in another AUM channel. After saving the Auv3 presets are automatically updated.
You can switch between them in one tap of a button.

Great info, thanks! As long as it does au in some way that’s good enough for me!
Edit: not universal! That’s a shame. How does drumjam compare? I think that’s got handpan
This is a basic model of a Hang Drum I put together for Drambo. Proper modelling of a Hang Drum is a bit involved because of the interaction between resonance modes. But this gets kinda close.
preview:

Excellent work @pampalini! I love it.
Very convincing script:
I think a lot of the charm of these instruments comes from their tuning. The particular instrument whose analysis I used as a reference for this patch has the following tuning:
D2, A2, Bb2, C3, D3, E3, F3, A3
Of course this being synth, you can play any and all other notes too. But there's a chance that the droning frequencies will not sound so nice with other notes.
Wow! Thanks for this.
I think we’ve covered all bases now. Here’s Four Tet to play us out...
Drumjam is absolutely worth breaking your rule for, and all of the IAPS are great.
Do you also have logic X? I believe there a few hang drum instruments in the World Muisc collection. You can use those exs instruments in AudioLayer.
Ah I was really hoping this thread was asking where to find relatively inexpensive handpans that aren’t shit quality. I really want a C Aeolian one but they’re several hundred minimum.
I've been trying to get realist HP for a long time now .
The best I have been able to create so far is with samples I bought online loaded 1 C note into GR-16 set to the first pad and in the Key section.
I've just got a Launchpad and it's incredible now changing scales and chords works with this 1 sound and can be customised in many ways.
I will post a video soon...

Sounds good. Interested!
Can these EXS24 files from pianobook be loaded to AudioLayer?
Plenty download options on this website!
@israelite
It seems most of the exs24 on pianobook have been converted in decent sampler format so I didn't bother to try. But it might be a good idea, because if it works, I guess you could edit the instruments.
Plenty of nice old dirty upright pianos can be found ! Sometimes, that's exactly what a song needs !
Nice! Sounds brilliant
Re au, one could program a nice hand pan sound in Burns Resonator.
Just to confirm, ThumbJam has a Hang voice. Nice sound, not sure how it compares with the real thing or other apps.
I was wondering, are there auv3 midi "keyboards" with a handpan-like layout?
Oval synth apparently has MIDI out now, but it's not AUv3 and you can't really customize the layout/number of pads.
