  • sorry to tell the obvious, but an instrument like this cannot be replicated electronically. There are interacting vibrations in the resonant body, creating and deleting over- and undertones … and I have my doubts if this interaction can be reproduced with sophisticated physical modeling … maybe some time in the future.

There are a couple of alternative tongue drums in production. I have access to one of those, very good sound.

Of course sample libraries give some impression of such instruments. Like digeridoo sample libraries. But you will be astounded when you hear or play yourself such instruments. It’s a different world of sound.

I'm not looking for a perfect emulation but rather, after playing around with Oval synth today, I find that the "handpan-style" layout makes it so intuitive to come up with certain kinds of melodies. I'm not looking for a sound module but for an auv3 midi keyoard. Oval is limited to only 8 pads, so I was wondering if there's other options.

  • Everything can be modeled but indeed, modeling enough of the interactions inside a pan drum to make it sound real is quite a challenge.
For now, I prefer using samples instead of spending days to create an authentic model in software.

That's true of so many instruments, where the electronic version sounds good, but it's nowhere close to the real thing in complexity and resonance and harmonics.
