Are there any xGB-per-app memory limits on the M1 Macbooks?

    Nope, it's an iOS/iPadOS limitation...

It’s insanely fast! Fingers crossed apple will lift the 5 GB RAM Limitation next weeks

What do you mean!? The new iPads have 8Gb (the 1-2TB ones 16Gb). Are you saying there are some restriction built in? Tried to google but could only find stuff about older macs.

    This i mean

Hurrah for apps that want to drink ALL my RAM.

Exactly. “Lucky Clan” must be a really sloppy developer if they want to hog the entire system.

Or an iOS advantage, depending on how you look at it. I've never had iOS thrash my swap, then grind the system to a halt and crash.

Apple is signaling very hard that they consider the iPad and the Mac to be different devices with different use cases. The memory systems reflect what they want to achieve on each device. Sure they will evolve this over time, but I don't think they are going to fracture the iPad line that hard at the upcoming WWDC.

  • “The new 12.9-inch iPad Pro comes 1TB and 2TB storage versions, both with 16GB. Although no one app can use more than around 5GB RAM, having greater than that amount available means that more apps can be retained in RAM and allow for rapid switching without relaunching.”

Uhh. I don’t care about rapid switching or relaunching. How about releasing the cap and letting the Devs do their thing.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Beside the fact that apple has a trackrecord and knows how to disappoint their users…. I am really excited for WWDC this year! Fingers crossed for some M1 iPad goodness

  • Hmm, I can use Photoshop on a Mac with 4GB of RAM and load as many layers as I want.

Which iPad did you upgrade from? Many of the preliminary reviews are saying it’s not as blazing fast as they expected. Or, not as much as a step up from the previous non-M1 iPads.

I found this surprising because my mini M1 16gb is pretty snappy

Just saw a post on twitter saying the new iPad pros only use maximum 5gb ram... > @onerez said:

Is the 350mb RAM cap on AUv3 instruments/fx still in effect?

On iOS, the memory is compressed instead of swapped. On the Mac, my swap doesn't grow to huge levels when using Photoshop.
Photoshop on the Mac doesn't load all the layers into RAM. If it did, the swap would thrash and the Mac would grind to a halt. Apps have to use resources wisely on the Mac too.

You can also memory map the files (layers) if needed.

  • Also, I just happen to be working on an image for a manual for an AU I'm working on. The image is in Affinity Photo. The image has three layers at about 1200 x 1200 each. The total file size is 6.3MB. That's a lot of layers even if the memory layout was very inefficient.

If Apple doesn't do anything at all to alter this memory limit, "pro" apps will be just fine.

  • Nice Pro M1 Air 4 comparison:

  • Been really happy with my 11" M1 Pro, it's amazing how many Fabfilter and Eventide plug ins I can use in Cubasis projects without it breaking a sweat at all. I don't even bother closing all my apps and restarting anymore, things remain fluid no matter how many apps are open in the background.

Definitely a little jealous of my wife's 12.9" M1 display though, it certainly looks great. Still a bit too heavy for what I prefer, especially with the Magic Keyboard attached. Getting close to the weight of my 16" MBP at that point.

Good to read that. I’ve ordered 11" too for similar reasons. Should arrive between 1 and 8 of June, just can’t wait 😛

  • When did you place your order? It takes so long…mine only July 1st-July 8th> @Janosax said:

It was two weeks ago, I check everyday or several times per day but it’s still in preparation :o

  • My wife's 12.9" was scheduled to arrive mid-June and ended up arriving this past week. I have a couple friends who had the same thing happen, though in all three cases they ordered on the release day. Anyway, just a heads up it might not be as long of a wait as you were originally expecting.

  • My air 3 and mini 5. Will blow the ipad pro maybe.

  • Well, ok…I guess I’m too anxious , my order was placed on May 24th. I traded in my old iPad ( hard to live without)> @onerez said:

  • Some movement today, status is « in preparation for shipping » B) :)

  • I’m not noticing the RAM cap have any impact yet. To be fair, I’m not noticing much performance difference between my 2018 and 2021 iPad Pros other than the screen.

  • Interesting, it felt like a very noticeable improvement for me in a few areas:

    • webpages load faster, even when loading many at once.
    • launching apps and AUs is faster
    • Starting up is faster
    • Rendering projects is MUCH faster.
    • Switching between apps is faster and smoother

    Same.

  • Can we see an AUM session in action? With some of the heavier apps and a sprinkle of chaos?

  • edited June 2021

We received the iPad Pro yesterday, so it was quite fast (scheduled between 1st and 8th of June initially). Now I have to wait for my birthday a few days :'( :D
