Testing the iPad Pro 12`9 M1 1TB 2021
Testing the iPad Pro M1 1TB 2021-32 audio tracks in Garageband, partly in stereo, all with a lot of resource-hungry effects like 20x MixBox CS plugin, Moog etc..https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/mixbox/ -compared to my iPad Pro 12`9 from 2019 simply outstanding performance; recorded/tested with USB interfaces SSL 2+, iRigPro, Zoom L12

Wow. Performs like a champ even with that file.
Keep adding tracks. Find out how many it takes to choke the system.
btw 12`9 version of course
Love to see how well Cubasis 3 works on the new Ipad Pro. Even with the updates I still get choking if I record more than 8 tracks of Moog Model D with 3 or 4 FX plugins. I have a 2017 Ipad pro running 14.2 OS.
the 12"9 M1 has the same internals as the 11" M1 though right?
thanks for posting! this is impressive b/c it looks like you could get similar results with the 8GB RAM version. Would love to see more like this -- there are very few music related ones on youtube so far.
nice, from yesterday…
after one week - still very impressed/happy
How is the battery performance on these machines ? My iPad Pro 1st gen (I think), eats battery, even when plugged in..
Today is the first day I’ve plugged mine in since Saturday.
I've been pleasantly surprised by this too. I was typically charging my 2018 12.9 every night, and now it's more like every second or third night.
Having issues with clicks and pops from plugging in an interface directly to the iPad. It only happens in music creation apps too. It's as if the interface is disconnecting for a millisecond but when I plug it into a USB hub, I have no issues. Its pretty strange
I'd guess it's just changing the sample rate and that's what you're hearing.
it’s a consistent thing that’s happening. it’s like the interface is disconnecting
I wish someone would test it with a UAD thunderbolt interface...
Is the USB hub powered? Sounds like power disconnections using cable only. Or faulty cable perhaps, is it tight or loose in usb-c port? Or interface needing firmware update. IKM for example sometimes fixes things with their iRigs. It can be a compatibility issue with new iPads Pro and your specific interface, try to reach the support.
The hub can be powered but the issue never happened when I plugged the interface directly to my 2018 Pro. The interface is USB C to USB C (Audient EVO 8). I’ll see if there’s an update for it but I doubt that’ll fix it. I wonder if I’m alone in this
I've had issues with some Thunderbolt and USB-C connectors not fitting well. It caused me a bunch of dropped connections to me external drive enclosure. I changed out the cable I use and I haven't had the problem since.
Can the new iPad use Thunderbolt and USB-C connectors
It only has the Thunderbolt 3 style (which is the same as USB-C) directly. I assume you can use the Thunderbolt 2 (mini DisplayPort) with the dongle adaptor thing.
But, I was only referring to the USB-C style connectors when used as USB-C and Thunderbolt cables that have connection issues. I think that some cables don't have very good plugs and this leads to problems.
Managed to find a 12.9 1TB in stock at the local apple store and now I’m drumming my fingers waiting for all the apps to restore from backup.
From this Max Tech video:
Interesting. I suspect that the (probably?) A15 based Air will make up some ground and could end up being a sweet spot for audio again. Interesting time ahead to see how this all plays out.
That's pretty cool! Still waiting for mine to ship. I should be good and still wait and hope that it doesn't ship before WWDC, but now I'm tempted to see if they have any stock in my local store.
To answer the question in regards to thunderbolt working with the new M1 iPP. It’s Yes for hubs and docks and no for most TB3 devices and SSD support.
I have the Arrow and X6 from UAD and neither connection is recognized when docked directly via thunderbolt 3 cable or through a Caldigit TB3 docking hub. Imaged attached
Hopefully UAD will, at the very minimum, make the Console app for ipadOS and get bus powered TB devices like the Arrow supported. At any rate it would be nice to be able to connect my x6 to the iPP as well especially considering that it’s AC powered and could theoretically charge the iPP.
Furthermore I’m kinda shocked that the only audio interface that my M1 iPP could recognize is a iConnectAudio4+. Nothing from my UAD or Apogee system is available to use within AB3 or any other audio app . This thing has so much potential but the shortcomings are incredibly short-sided from Apple. I actually have more functionally with my old ipadmini2 than in the current M1 ipadPro.
Apple really missed the boat on this one but here’s to Apple🍺and hoping i have to eat crow when they do a surprise update to iPadOS15 before WWDC22
The x6 isn’t class compliant, is it?
It’s very very very unlikely that we will see UAD on iOS ever. This is what leads people to disappointment...
I guess so, I'm still pretty new to UAD > @Tarekith said:
Ideally I just want a small interface to travel with my M1 and I really wish that could be my UAD Arrow or Apogee One. I'd even be open to buying ANOTHER interface but at that point I'd want adat in and out to pipe it directly into my home studio setup without having to aggregate the device in the event I want to use those pre-amps in a larger setup.
waiting patiently...
The RME babyface pro is class compliant and it has adat i/o.
Not sure if it (USB 2) can work with an adapter with the Ipad pro 2021 Thunderbolt port, but I would like to know, because I have one and want to purchase an ipad pro 2021 soon.
Any Ipad Pro 2021 user can confirm if an USB2 audio card (RME Babyface in my case) would work with the Thunderbolt port?
Apple makes the wording on this confusing and the port is already confusing enough as it is. On the technical side, the port is a USB-4 port. So, it provides Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1, and USB-4.
Every USB class compliant audio device I've tried works fine directly to the port or through a powered hub. If the interface is class compliant, it should work. But, I haven't tried the RME myself.
Note also that some devices have a basic class compliant mode, but certain features only work when their drivers are installed on a computer. So, these features won't work on the iPad even if the device is class compliant. For example, the loopback doesn't work with my MOTU M4 on my iPad, but the basic functionality of the M4 does work in class compliant mode. (The latency is higher on my iPad than it is on my Mac as well because of this.)
@Sam23 what is the app in the first screen shot? Ta
