Focusrite Scarlett Solo G3 works perfectly plugged directly via USB-C cable to my iPad Pro M1. Audio is really stable even with 64 buffers. Tons of CPU to use, not a single issue in music making, a very good iDevice. Audio for music production is really stable also on internal speakers, USB-C to jack adapter and AirPods Pro. Audio media consumption like Apple Music or YouTube has some stability issues however, but only with USB-C to jack adapter (some beta testers report this issue is fixed in iPadOS 15) and is perfectly stable with other audio devices so I use often AirPods Pro as latency is not critical for that usage. Battery life is excellent and this iPad stays really cool, you have to push it a lot to make it barely warm. IMO music makers are the only users who can really take advantage of all that M1 Power, even if iPadOS optimisation is perhaps not quite there yet.

Any Ipad Pro 2021 user can confirm if an USB2 audio card (RME Babyface in my case) would work with the Thunderbolt port?

Works fine with my RME UFX+

I think it’ll work just fine

  • Thanks guys for the answers. Now its clear to me.
So I think I will need this Apple
adapter so I can use all my actual usb devices (usb hub, audio cards, etc)

  • Correct. You can get cheaper ones on Amazon from Aukey that are smaller and work just as well too. I use them all the time here.

The "USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter" from Apple works too. I had this one already for uing an external monitor with a MacBook. It lets you charge the iPad while using it as well as having the HDMI out.

On my MOTU M4, the USB-C to USB-C cable works with no adaptor and it bus powers the M4 from the iPad fine.

This one "USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter" is better and much more versatile as it allows to charge the Ipad.
If the Ipad pro powers you M4 is good news it probably would power my Babyface.

Yeah, it is more versatile, but it costs a lot more. I probably wouldn't have bought it for the iPad if I didn't already have it for the MacBook where I needed the HDMI connector. So far for the way I've been using the new iPad, the battery lasts a long time. Still, the multiport adapter is a good option, especially if you can find it at a good price.
