If I had pulled that date out of a hat I would have been happy with it.
There have been so many drum machines released on iOS and many of these times I have thought ‘this is it!... this will be the one I need, it’s the one I’ve been waiting for!’ .... but then it’s fallen a bit short. This time I’m almost totally certain 😃

Careful with those expectations. I believe this is meant more as a fun and nostalgic app, not as the ultimate drum machine.

Yeh, I got you man, that’s good advice - but I don’t think I will be able to manage them down. It’s just that every single feature I can see on it is one that I would want to have, a mouth watering combination indeed. I’m sensing deep grooves coming! - My feeling is that it will soon become a go to classic... I’ll be grabbing it as soon as it parachutes gently through that AppStore skylight 👍

  • I don't think we know it's meant to be nostalgic necessarily? Maybe that's wishful thinking on the part of someone who has absolutely zero memories of making computer music in 1992 or whatever.

    Sure, we do know that.

Nostalgic for the developer and for the many people who experienced the original. That’s all I meant by that. The spirit is inspired by Bram’s classic early drum app from 25 years ago, not by trying to make the ultimate drum machine.

Yet modern at the same time for those who don’t have a clue about the original.

Either way it’ll be one damn cool, fun, and useful app for sure. B)

  • You may be right. I'm aware of the old-school pedigree of Hammerhead. Just hoping it's a jumping-off point and not a period recreation (which, knowing the sonic quality of Bram's apps, I seriously doubt it is).

Must be a great personal journey for Bram Bos to resurrect this app. The first one was probably something he has done as a teenager.

Indeed, I was 20 at the time. This is a project I've had on my mind for a long time, but I feel I can do it justice now. The new Hammerhead will be grown-up, but still fun and easy like the original.

As Wim also said, it is not meant to be the ultimate drum machine on iOS. It is meant to be a super fun and accessible drumcomputer which can now always be with you. Like a little 90s groovebox in your pocket :)

  • Ultimate or not, it’ll end up in a ton of my tracks like all your other apps do

Lot's of people said that and ended up creating the "ultimate something" by accident :D. Looks cool in any case, I'll buy it for the nostalgia alone.

I genuinely can't wrap my head around how incredible this functionality is. It took me a minute or two to fully grasp that it was what I thought it was!

That's cool. I don't recognize the host in this one--is the transport on or off in the host?

That's Cubasis and the transport is not running

Thanks for confirming. I figured as much given that the triangle looks disengaged but I am not familiar with the icon to the left of the triangle.

Loop section, if you’re that curious

  • I never used it before but it looks like the perfect groovebox for my iPhone.
Any other similar groove boxes you guys fancy for your iPhone ?
Gr-16 is also another good candidate but I like the simplicity ( at least what I see ) in Hammerhead

I love Gr-16 but I find it too fiddly on the small iPhone screen, IMHO it needs at least an iPad Mini to feel at home.
Drambo and Gadget 2 would be my top choices for drums, virtual analog sound generators and groovebox feeling on an iPhone. Some also swear by Ampify Groovebox if "simple" is your thing.

I'm like really, really, really hoping that this new iteration of Hammer Head will have an option to use 'no interpolation' when transposing samples for that old-school crunch!
(The no-interpolation roughness is a fresh breeze compared to the 'muddiness' caused by linear interpolation).

As for old-school 8-bit samples I'm a bit puzzled as on 'modern' playback engines the 8-bit samples sound 'noisy' while on my Amiga they sound 'clean'. Could this be that the 'bit re-mapping' is flawed/miss-behaving when playing 8-bit samples in some apps?

Don't know if @brambos is willing to share more teasers before it's launch-time?

    Cheers!

You’re still using an Amiga? Mad respect.

This often leads to a much more usable app instead of a super complicated one. I'm very curious and interested now that it doesn't aim to be the ultimate!

  • Oh we’re posting Simpsons vids? I’ll take any excuse.

Agreed. Think of it more like the app equivalent of a Volca Drum, a Volca Sample and a Volca Rompler combined with a fun sequencer :)

It's rare when a programmer is also good at graphic design. This turned out really nice.
I wish my crush be so inviting to play with her knobs like these are

    This explains everything :sunglasses:

  • I refuse to believe that Bram is lacking in math and coding skills.

  • @israelite lol.

    To all:
6 days to go, I know someone asked already but any guesses or info on price? Trying to budget.

@brambos any random features, either for sound design or sequencer? Or both?

  • I loved the OG Hammerhead back in the day. I think I was still using FastTracker II but as more and more virtual instruments/synths/grooveboxes started appearing, I slowly transitioned over to Cakewalk.
