I understand. Maybe just avoid those threads, it's usually not me who starts or encourages them by the way, but I did feel the need to make this thread.
If you enjoy what you’re doing and are happy making money that way, just ignore what other people think about it if they disagree with you. You won’t convince everyone, and often trying too hard to defend it backfires.
This applies to everyone doing everything, not just the OP.
A lot of the tech YouTube channels I watch are sponsored. It’s weird but I find that way less offensive than ads. It’s the same for podcasts I don’t mind if you wanna talk about squarespace for a minute, but I don’t wanna see the same ad on every YouTube video I watch.
Yup, I definitely get that
I think it is a testament to how nice people really are on this forum that they put up with such nonsense.
Hmm, I think you are veering pretty far into rudeness here. If you are not enjoying this thread, just avoid it my friend.
I will wear that suit too.
I think you are just going too far. This is a forum about music apps but you are hijacking threads to sell your channel.
As I understand there is a section about selling stuff which doesn’t make it to the last posts section. YouTube channel selling should be in that category.
YouTube ads are going the way of browser ads, IMHO. I monetise my videos because why not, and it generates a bit of change. But then YT started mandating mid-roll ads and non-skippable ads (you can notionally opt out of non-skippables but it doesn't include the really short ones). All this means you have to be careful to click the right things to turn off the things that annoy pople the most and you can't do it globally for existing videos. So now I watch back really old videos of mine and they have long ads in the middle
None of that matters while you can choose not to monetise occasional videos, but the latest TOS update seems to say YT now reserves the right to run ads on your videos regardless. I don't know how that plays out in practice but it's going to end up with subscription being the only viable option as a YT consumer. Come to think of it, I'll get way more out of a YT Premium subscription that I would out of something like Netflix. I just discovered there's a free 1-month trial...
I think people are getting carried away with bashing @Gavinski
“highjacking threads to sell your channel”??? What are you taking about?? @Gavinski is the OP!
Other people promote their music, YouTube or other channels, etc. and I don’t see anyone coming down on them.
Nobody is forcing you to read @Gavinski posts. SMH!
@Gavinski Thank you for all your hard work and contributions. You are making people's lives better.
Don't listen to negative comments.
Btw:I do let the commercials play out.
I'm YT premium so I don't see ads. For what it's worth I'm happy to watch sponsored content in the videos from other (non music making) YouTubers as long as it's not too long. Although I'm not sure whether that would be something you would want to consider for your stuff.
@Gavinski I understand that having a moentised yt channel is very tempting for the reason of having a passive income. I was considering this as well. Many other people try to jump on this bandwagon too these days. But if the main goal is $, it steals all the joy from creating content. At least in my mind. Are you having fun doing what you do? Because if not, perhaps it's a good reason to rethink your decisions. Cheers.
I pay for premium. For me it’s one of the best subscription services. I watch tons of youtube (especially cooking videos, but also learning, video essays, music and gaming related stuff) so it’s basically my netflix.
Ads free is huge on it’s own (cause it’s everywhere) but the youtube music service and offline and background play top it off perfectly.
YouTube premium cuz I’m on YouTube all day watching stuff lol
Good to know. I hadn’t thought of that before, but it’s a relatively effortless thing for me to wait for them to finish if it helps you out.
Same with me but no premium, i think I’m just conditioned to having the ads now and just feels normal. Like watching telly in the 90s
YouTube premium is my favorite. (Tried Apple Music and Spotify before)
When viewing/listening to downloaded content offline in the YouTube apps, they count as views and are updated when the apps are online.
Here's a poll for @Gavinksi only:
If the ad is 30 seconds, but we can skip it after 5 seconds:
Its completely anonymous, so please answer honestly. I may determine how long I let ads play
Edit: nm...answer is above. also would I notice content creators are now just imbedding the ads in the videos. How do you feel about this business model, and do you think people would just find a different video presenter?
I don't think there is a valid alternative to youtube unfortunately, unless you already have a massive presence elsewhere online.
Thank you Anickt. I'm not quite sure where all that came from, it's out of line completely in my opinion and is quite dispiriting. Doug, Jakob, everyone posts their stuff here. The only difference is that I happen to be an active channel member. Many devs start their own threads, Bleass for example, have their own thread for their apps here. This thread was started for a very valid reason and the results of the poll are useful and interesting to many. Can we all please move on from this, I really don't need or want this kind of drama.
I don't mean a different site, I mean a different presenter on youtube. If the ads were imbedded and unskippable, or done like live plugs, would they just go find someone else who does tutorials?
I don't watch too many tutorials myself, nor do I even log into google/youtube. I'm a manual and a "poke and hope" kinda guy....
Ah, you mean the way some people are sponsored and just talk about the product they are sponsored to promote? If you mean ads embedded in the video itself, I don't think I've ever seen that, and I don't see that it would be something I could do.
Fair point. It has been taken on board. Thank you Win
It’s sentences like “ I am the only youtuber of any size who is actually a constructive and regular poster” that rub me up the wrong way, I guess. The claiming of credit for feature updates. The ‘I know better than the developer’ vibe. The ‘I do so much for this community’... It has put me off your channel, unfortunately.
Calm down, Mary
That's a pity, thanks for sharing though.
When people are kind enough to give you FREE content (like Gav, Doug, Jakob, Pete + others) it is polite not to bitch about them.
If you don't like their content, then don't watch it. If you don't like their threads, don't read them.
This very forum is being supplied FREE.
Be grateful for the gift. Because you might find it gone one day...
Based on my understanding of earnings from daily video views and average engagement rates I'd say people like Gav are pretty much doing this for free. I value the offering, but I cant stand the ads. YT seem to be pushing harder and harder with the subscription model by pushing more and more ads in to the stream. Outside of video advertising there is a stack of other advertising in the feed. It's almost unbearable. It's sheer stubbornness that is keeping me from subscribing.
In a niche market like this I think it will be very hard to make money as a Youtuber. Then again I dont think the app developers in this niche market are making loads for their blood sweat and tears either. Let's not forget actual musicians, its hard enough to make a living a muso let alone with the whole COVID situation. So, I'd say as per usual its Apple and Google who are making all the money.
