New Apple ad highlights music making on iOS (iPhone 5S to be specific!)
Pretty kooky fun: http://www.apple.com/iphone-5s/powerful/#video-power

I'm curious what the violin player is using.
They have played this commercial to death on U.S. tv, and goes right along with my single biggest complaint against Apple's marketing over the last 15 years: How does a company that makes the products which help push the most envelopes in the art world never show music or video that reflects this? Almost all mod-pop or really bad teenage garage-pop. How about some Autechre for once?
because most people don't like Autechre, that's why. it's not as accessible. Apple isn't interested in pushing music in any direction -- they're interested in people buying their stuff.
That contraption is the "The Motion Synth": https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1892750571/the-motion-synth-turn-movement-into-music .
It's encouraging that they even put these kind of apps in a mainstream TV ad, any kind of awareness that brings eyes in our direction is good.
Still, I was disappointed the tuner app they showed the bass player using (Cleartune) wasn't mine :P

Avant-Garde and cutting edge technology-based music has been used in tv commercials and film scores for time immemorial. The context makes sense, as well...a majority's opinion on a certain act is irrelevant in this situation. Also, I only used Autechre as an example.
Edit: I should elaborate on this a bit. Score music generally doesn't have to conform to an audiences taste, as much as it should conform to a mood being presented on screen. I personally feel like music that reflects the technological advancements that Apple have made in their hardware, would be a nice representation. I wouldn't expect it to be an all-or-nothing situation, but I'd like to see at least one nod to that community to held Apple afloat for many years when others didn't.

Thanks for the link! I'm gonna show this to a couple folks...

I remember thinking the same thing the first time I saw the ad. I know the smiley face in TET would've been a nice image on the screen
Same with us about the tuner app but we were happy to see AmpliTube and VocaLive both featured as well as spotting iRig PRO three times. Let them play this commercial to death, I say!
Wonder how they missed showing IK's pop up ads?
Because if they occur, it is right after the app opens (thus giving zero issues for the way they are using them in the commercial) and they have chosen to feature our apps in a previous TV spot as well as billboard ads too because they are quite fond of our apps and accessories.
We appreciate the interest you show even if it is in the form of a hurled semi-clever potshot. I'm sure we'll have more successful apps, accessories, and features by Apple and others to allow for more opportunities to further your burgeoning career in comedy.
Edit - or the short version: They're not that big a deal for most people. Sorry that you don't agree, but at least there are compromises in the works that should be a good resolution anyway so stay tuned.
Yeah, they should have shown Alchemy, you can make film scores with it.
Well I thought it was clever, and that's really all that matters! Btw are you a dev for IK? If yes then badger me all you want, if not why do you keep showing up on this forum? We really don't need any marketing geniuses from IK we get enough of that in your apps.
Also IK multimedia I just timed how long it takes for the pop up to occur 13 seconds in on the first one and another 4 seconds on the second pop up! Which both disable sound until you hit cancel! Not exactly right after you open them. But then who would expect a marketing person to tell the truth!
Curious about those "compromises in the works". Maybe another IAP to get rid of the spam? I really like many of IK's products and apps but the marketing I must say I find quite annoying.
Good they show music, how come they still do not acknowledge on the CCK packaging and guide that it is what you need to make music with if you want to use external gear? Still only WOM.
And the marketing reps are unbelievable! I've actually spent hundreds of dollars on several products including hardware, desktop software, and almost all of their apps.
The definition of compromise is, both sides of a dispute making concessions to come to an agreement. Isn't paying for a product all the concession a consumer should have to make?
@dwarman, so true. You can return/replace a CCK if it doesn't do MIDI/ audio data so they clearly support its use. But why doesn't Apple officially acknowledge its use for music?
I love the promotion, it makes me wonder if the more vocal devs here would be willing to say how sales have been since the TV ads have been airing. I imagine there are a lot of kids out there looking up the "Music" category in the app store who had not before.
I can't think of a single IK app that isn't outclassed and outperformed by a rival alternative unburdened by popup advertising. Best avoided.
@PaulB so what would you prefer over iLectric? Neo-Soul-Keys? I like both but iLectric has more instruments to choose from. And what about iGrand Piano?
CMP Grand Piano and Neo Soul Keys and you're good, just need a device with space
Yes, Neo Soul Keys, iLectric only has a few sample sets, most of the sounds available use the same samples with effects dialed in. Neo Soul Keys has all the sampled components that you can use to change the basic character of the instrument. I use CMP Grand Piano for acoustic piano.
NeoSoul Keys and CMP Grande. And Thumbjam for any other sampled acoustic or electronic instrument. I like the 2 former because they're up with the standards of the latter 1. All this on 5s with 32g...
In fact, dudes, they shoulda put Thumbzilla (Thumbjam) in the ad, talk about uber cool iOS music interface, FFS
That commercial has run constantly for a few weeks. My first reaction is always that it's better to give people some exposure - any exposure - to the concept that you can make great music with this device you probably already have. Trying show how an app like Impaktor works (even though the basic concept is fairly accessible) in a 30 second add spot with out sound like a documentary is a tough ask.
But while they obviously are going to pick the image, music, and apps that they think will sell the most devices to the most people, I do get annoyed by the "Wii Music" aspect of how they sell iOS music. In particular, they show people either playing real instruments with the augmentation of an iOS device (which I do, of course, with JamUp/BIAS on guitar), or pretending to play an instrument like the woman playing air violin without any particular skill or accuracy.
It's advertising like that made me scoff at iDevices as real musical tools for years, even though I had both an iPod and iPad and am an almost 20-year guitar player.
Maybe Apple could work on fixing up their IAA technology before doing highlights like this?
Just enjoy the ride. There is space for every one. It's all about perspectives and opinions.

You'll see in an upcoming app, then it should be rolled out to the existing apps. No, it isn't IAP to get rid of them - I understand how you may think that (or half-joke about it or however it was meant) so hopefully the upcoming system will work more to the liking of people here. I personally think it will, but I'll reserve even my final thoughts until we all can see it in the wild, and talk about exactly how it functions in a released app. I hope that is satisfactorily straightforward and we can revisit the discussion in the not-too-far-off future.

I am telling the truth, what you describe is not how they are supposed to work. Simply contact support (like most people would do when they are experiencing abnormal behavior for an app, but I understand you don't like IK and our employees personally from the sound of it so you might get more satisfaction trying to paint us as liars here instead) at http://www.ikmultimedia.com/support and lo and behold they will offer advice, resolutions to issues, and forward any potential bugs to development for fixing.
Can't wait to see what kind of hoops we'll have to jump through!
It is quite nice the way it works now, but we'll have to reserve full discussion until it is released officially though. Safest that way, and I really hope it remains as it is now in testing and there's a way it could progress further (though only aesthetic in this case) so my fingers are crossed (in the good way, I mean) that it comes to light in the best possible fashion and as soon as possible.

The IK school of customer relations. Basil Fawlty would be so proud...
Wow it just keeps getting better! Blame me because my pop up ads aren't working like they're supposed too! According to you ik, most people don't have a problem with the pop up ads! Just everyone on this forum and also on the iPad musician forum! But I guess we must only be 0.1 % of your customer base.
I've actually used your customer service in the past for desktop stuff and they were very quick and helpful and I have no problem with them at all! Maybe you should contact your support team and see if they can give you some advice on how to treat the customer!
