  • Auria Pro - despite its flaws, it's allowed me to mix hundreds of tracks on my iPad

GarageBand and NS2, which have allowed me to write hundreds of tracks.

    Everything by FabFilter and ToneBoosters.

I wouldn't notice if every music app except Drambo disappeared from my iPad ❤️
Got a soft spot for Strng, Pipa, Poly 2, Ting and Swam strings though also =))
edit: my god how did I forget about Spacecraft - essential!

  • Samplr and Borderlands: even though I don't use them as often as I wish I did (the flow to integrate with other apps is a pain), they're absolutely the reason I bought an iPad.

AUM (+Audioshare): I do literally 99% of my work in this thing.

Mozaic and StepPolyArp: Creating a MIDI controllable arp setup allowed me to feel better about selling my Octatrack.

AudioDamage plugins: There are so many good AUs out there, and I definitely use a lot, but I've always loved AD plugins on my desktop, and the iOS ones are just as good. Plus, you basically have everything you'd need from one developer FX wise, plus a looper!

I love all of them in one way or another but these are my regular rotation apps that I would not want to uninstall:

    • StaffPad - so inspiring to hear an orchestra playing your ideas
    • MultiTrackStudio - does pretty much everything I need from a DAW and a few things I didn’t think I would need but now can’t be without.
    • MultiTrack DAW - direct to audio/no MIDI workflow which is becoming increasingly productive for me, albeit tough on storage space.
    • Gadget + all the Korg addons - pretty much all the sounds I could want in one place. Sequencer is great for sketching but if something is likely to need external audio then it gets quickly moved to MultiTrackStudio controlling Gadget.
    • GridInstrument - thanks again to @seonnthaproducer for this recently discovered gem. Works so well in overlay or side by side mode with Gadget for controlling its synths and MultiTrack DAW for controlling loaded IAAs without needing to switch screens. Going to look more at the available KB-1 layouts as I just noticed it also supports side by side mode.
    • BeatHawk - only ever used it as a ROMpler before but since digging in to its song mode I intend on using it more in my MTDaw enviornment.
    • THU/Nembrini - 15 year old me would have killed for these. “Want to sound like RATT, son?”
    • Brusfri - magical noise removal on guitar signal
    • AUM - for quick testing of a workflow or app
    • ApeMatrix - responds to MultiTrack DAW clock so wins over AUM as a base for writing music
    • Atom 2 - run inside ApeMatrix or MultiTrackStudio when I need accurate/workhorse MIDI work done
    • MIDI Tools/apeMatrix Mixer Send Receive - adds missing routing features to DAWs/hosts
    • DigiStix2/DigiKeys - Slot in nicely with my no-MIDI workflow as sequencers which host their own instruments.
    • Helium - Offers a few USPs that I make use of including multi-take recording, configurable piano roll layout, editable automation, MIDI file preview, host independent transport.

I have not included any FX outside of guitar FX here as most synths/drums/whatever sound fine enough to me as they come so I don’t get too excited by spending anything but the minimal amount of time on that aspect of songwriting. Doesn’t stop me buying them all, natch.

    Aphelian - so much fun
Magellan 2 - great sound, light on cpu and I can dial stuff in pretty quick
Patterning 2 - creating drum patterns the fast way
Ape matrix - I love how everything works together
AUM - Quick, stable, light on cpu: industry standard for me
FAC Alteza - The bestest reverb for creamy long evolving stuff
Nembrini Audio Delay3000 - simply gorgeous sound, somehow different than the rest in terms of flexibility
AD ratshack reverb - the line-in input mode alone is worth this app
Fractal bits - lofi drum synthesis the random way
GR16 Grooverider - my goto drum machine for samples: multi out, easy import of whole oneshot libraries, can change samples on the fly, great synthesizer for deep analog to sharp digital sounds, per voice fx chain, awesome awesome behind the scenes concept, ultra fast workflow if you know how to treat this groovebox but unfortunately only mono samples
    Helium - midi madness
Atom 2 - another midi madness
Fugue - instant 4 track loop thingy
Koala - I once sampled a verbal fight between my wife and my 4 year old son and made a beat from it which I produced on the fly
Chord maps 2 - this is one of my goto jam midi apps for exploring progressions
    Suggester - another jam thingy
Filter step - load it, push random and set on onfinite mode. Done!
Turnado - made for touch, fun - fun - fun
Gauss - looping that I love
Ripple maker - discovering the krell patch from the manual led to an eyeopening experience. Thx Bram Bos for this.

Traktor DJ 2, I love the layout and just find it fun to use for DJing. I don’t miss my S8 at all since downgrading to this “simpler” DJ app.

I heart SunVox, NanoStudio 2, Patterning 2, ChordPolyPad, iFretless Bass and everything by FabFilter.

I'm also enamoured of various 'mojo' effects, including FAC Chorus and Phazer, Eventide MicroPitch, Undulator and Blackhole, the Nembrini rack delay (Delay3000), DDMF 6144 (EQ), Envelope (rack reverb) and MagicDeathEyeStereo (bus compressor).

I can't be bothered to attempt an exhaustive list, but I will mention iWAVESTATION and Model 15, as they teamed up and persuaded me to get an iPad in the first place and I love them still. Samplr and Egoist were not far behind.

It's amazing what we have on these glowing rectangles.

Thanks to everybody who's developed something. You guys are great.

    Koala Sampler

  • Sadly, Roland Sound Canvas 😭😭😭
