Nothing to do with Apple. The artists would have control over their copyrights, not Apple.

    Yeah all packs installed ~3GBs

I’m really into features not content and presets. GB is so crippled compared to the other DAWs. Guess it’s meant to be simple and dumbed-down.

Crippled? GarageBand is like the only sequencer on iOS that properly supports multitouch, has top quality touch instruments, regularly updated, clip launcher functionality, etc. It’s the others that need to catch up to GarageBand.

    👍

I mean. I’ve never really noticed this? If you’re using a boatload of AUs is this really a thing?

The lack of bussing and more automation is definitely a bummer but otherwise it pretty much does everything else and does it pretty well shrug

So it now has sends and buses?

No, I thought maybe that was what was meant too, but same old Master Effects with a reverb and a delay :(

    Thanks for clarifying

Bussing, sends, and automation kinda IS my production style so GarageBand is definitely behind in my use case. Keeping an eye on it though.

These artist packs don’t draw me in but are cool if they bring more people to iOS to discover the other developers we know and love.

  • You don’t have to use these packs as they are, you can chop, mangle and resample the loops to your heart’s desire. I often just grab a tiny slice of an Apple loop and turn it into a different instrument with processing.

Lol I hear that, that’s me in Reason. 10-20% actually writing stuff, then the rest is all throwing LFO CV’s everywhere and automating a million things lol…

Meh, I don’t want some pop artist to write my tracks 😂

Yeah, I don’t understand the “artist packs”.

Of course I’ve never understood taking someone else’s music (samples, Loops, whatever) and trying to make my own music with them either, but I guess I can understand the market for this kind of stuff; There are people that aren't musicians out there in the world that may just want to goof around. Y’know, get their Lady Gaga kicks? Idk 😂

  • To be totally honest this is really not an 'update' to GarageBand as there is ZERO new functionality added to the app but just a bunch of new sounds so 'kids' can sound like they favorite artists.

I mean we still can't tune our drum sounds, and the kits contain 16 sounds and only 12 pads to play them with like seriously?!

What about giving us an empty drum kit we can populate with our own sounds?
Bring over Logic's Quick Sampler and RetroSynth (which already look like 'made for touch').

I mean the sound engines are already in place, just the UI is missing.
(The sounds in the Drumkits use QuickSampler and Drum Synths from Logic).

Usually when Apple brings out a new major iOS/iPadOS version GarageBand is updated requires the latest iOS/iPadOS version so it'll be very interesting to see if GarageBand stays 'as is' with new sound packs or if it actually gets some new features as well.

    Time will tell what happens...

If you've never watched Andrew Huang's "Four Producers One Sample" videos on YouTube they will give you an idea of how creative people can get just using a sample. I frequently participate in the the HitRecord Play Along where you can remix or add to a weekly sample and it's a great exercise to push yourself out of your musical boundaries. I wouldn't use popular music personally, but I've heard some amazing remixes of songs and weird mashups that came from people goofing around with someone else's loops or samples. To each their own.

I've watched them sample-flips from time to time but I've unsubscribed from his channel as all the 'space-sh*t' was just too stupid or maybe I'm just too old to find it 'cool' or something?!?

I’d love the ability to build my own “dream” drum kits with customized everything AND I’d love to be able to build custom virtual guitars. I assume either iOS GarageBand or iOS Logic will eventually have something like this, but if they don’t, maybe a developer like Yonac will. ;)

  • I'd far rather see them add a proper mixer and parameter automation rather than this to be honest

  • Haven't messed with GB much at all. Is it possible to send tracks out to AUM and master there? Like IAA multitrack outs?

Yes, you can export a few formats of stereo audio files from it, and I'm pretty sure there would be no compatibility issues with AUM.

I doubt either of those things will happen. However, I could easily see them incorporating a machine learning based “Mix Assistant” for music, in the same way they have automated drummers to fill out tracks.

Would be relatively easy then for people to get a “perfect mix” every time for their style of music. Because there are already A.I./machine learning systems available for this kind of thing, I think this is almost guaranteed to happen.

In addition, I think they’ll have A.I./ML-based session musicians available to fill out tracks. Again, this is an easy guess because they have millions of songs available to them to feed into a system for analysis from which they can then derive advanced simulations of “intelligent” backup musicians.

I can't stand the animations when switching between diff things in GB so i never use it, but when I've dabbled ..the drummer feature is pretty impressive. Unparalleled in iOS. And the instruments sound great. Plus it never crashes?

That said, people use it for so many different things and somehow it facilitates that wide spectrum of users and for that I would recommend it to anyone starting out.

Oh I’m subscribed to Andrew’s channel, and I get it. I guess maybe I need to retract a little, because you’re totally right, a lot can be done with just a sample, but I don’t think that’s what this is here. Maybe I shouldn’t have said “samples”, but rather just artist “loops”.

I’ve worked with sample based stuff myself , and I think there’s a fine line between being truly creative with something and taking it in a whole new direction (for example, breaking a sample down into modular/granular bits and using parts of these bits rearranged to create something totally different) or just sticking a loop of someone else’s work in your mix and riding on the coattails of someone else’s ideas.

So, I’m going to give myself a little challenge with all that said, by extracting a sample or two from one of these new “artist packs” (I think I’ll start by looking at the Lady Gaga one). I know about the stringent copyright and usage stuff they’re talking about, but I have no worries, as I plan on totally f&%$ing it up beyond recognition.

I know you can export. My question is can you route individual tracks to AUM through IAA? So then you can send them to a master bus in AUM.

Exporting from GB then importing into AUM and then recording in AUM is way too many steps and files to deal with.

It could also be filed as a 'bug report' if the use has 'Reduce Motion' enabled under Accessibility > Motion to avoid unnecessary animations. I doubt Apple will listen, I've tried before without much luck...
(Filed another 'Bug Report' regarding the Animations. We'll have to wait and see what happens).

It feels like this says something about their preferred demographic. Essentially it’s a marketing toy at this point. I have tried to like GB, but it’s interface is slow and way too dumbed down. Too bad they buried Alchemy within it.

Exactly. No BUS stuff, practically zero automation options, hideous MIDI workflow, no support for MIDI AUv3 plugins and the list goes on. 😢
